The guy tried to give her a mic and what did she do? She kept right on swinging those arms and singing with that booming voice. She didn't need that mic. Dude should have known better. Just let the woman do her thing and sing!!!
The one thing I love about these two African Amercian Heros is that both of them encouraged each other during these trying times in history. With his moving sermons and speeches he insipred her singing. And with her powerful soul-peircing singing she inspired him. Thank you SOOOOOO MUCH for posting!
MLK was a great speaker, but I think he also had one of the most amazing and genuine smiles. I love his smile at the very beginning when she began to sing...
Chills...awesome, unbelievable. Today, we take for granted what Dr. King and Mahalia fought so hard for, with petitions, protests, tears and ultimately, Dr. King's life. The song is so fitting, because like those walls at Jericho, it seemed insurmountable for some to even be able to vote let alone ride in the front of the bus. You can see the excitement of the early civil rights movement; that they were on fire and determined to bring about change. Makes me wish I could have been there.
Chills...amazing, incredible, unbelievable. Today, we take for granted the freedoms that Mahalia and Dr. King fought so hard for with their petitions, protests and tears, and ultimately Dr. King's life. As with the walls of Jericho, it seemed insurmountable for some to even be able to vote, let alone ride in the front of the bus. This video truly captures that excitement and promise of the early civil rights movement. The fire was burning for a change. I wish I could have been there.
She WAS singing this prophetically. The song is an old African-American slave song that has a hidden message of escape to freedom with a leader leading the way. African-American churches great singers or bad ones that are in tune with the spirit of the moment have historically just busted out into a song that is on target. It's why Soul music is from Gospel.
She may have been singing that prophetically to him, that he was like Joshua, and that may be why he is nervous. Sometimes that kind of spirit movement happens and he knows that Holy Spirit well!!!
I just watched a biography of her life last night on TV. AWESOME! Imagine, if she had lived another 20 or 25 years; she'd be 99 now. Totally reacheable. I remember when she died and my mom cried as she read the paper. Once in a millenium....
She had one of the greatest speakers in the world at a lost for words. It was stated in her early life, she found God and he told her to speak. She really wanted to be a preacher but since women weren't allowed, she did the next best thing. Can you imagine if she was a preacher? I'd never miss service. MLK was right, her voice only comes around once in a millenium.
@Quavarius, not only her voice but her musical abilities too. For example i hate all other versions of "Silent night" but her way to sing this song giving it a deviating and much more intense feeling is simply great. Based on this facts i´m glad that she could not waste her voice getting a simply preacher.
How did her voice sound out so loud & clear!??!? @ 1st i thought she had a clip on mic then i notice she didnt, I sum how thynk thys is just sum of GOD POWER DISPLAYIN..wow,,what do you all thynk!?!??
@JaiTonio4Fun, this had nothing to do with "supernatural forces" but with the tremendous power of her voice.
Check the Newport video of "Just a closer walk with thee" where she crosses the stage during the performance; finally the grand piano microphones located under and inside the piano nevertheless recorded her voice besides the piano´s own sound too...
@cftmri1 who gave her her voice? you? her? God made her. Made her amazing. Blessed her along the way... tell you what...we'll vote on it. you get one vote. i get one vote. Mahalia gets the tiebreaker. God is real. Get right.
@revpgesq, based on the fact that i´m no christian but a simple gospel music lover i see this a bit more pragmatic; the genes of her parents, talent, singing practice in the church choirs, live experiences and the love of music generates such a voice and musicality.
But she not only had been a great singer; if you check "Silent night" you can hear that Mildred Falls and she used some added and some modified chords to enlarge the intence of the song in a way the austrian origin never had.
That woman was just fired up. She can move a crowd w/o a mic. Go on Mahalia. Rev. King just smilin. True footage and vintage of history in the makin. Thanks cftmri1 for posting this
Looks like this was spontaneous and unexpected moment for mahalia and those at the event. Not many can pull this off and have it lead to a timeless and endless memory. God speed!
I am a fan of music throughout the generations but I don't think I have ever seen a singer outside of opera, sing freely and so audibly without a microphone like she did. You can tell by the way she was toying with it in her hand that she really didn't need it...hehehe... Go ahead Mama Halie...
I believe there will hardly be an opera singer too with such a genious voice. It´s not the only recording where she was meters away from any microphone and could still be heard.
She refused to hold that mic up to her mouth. She didn't need it. She was in a zone and called on a Higher Power to be heard that day. She sang just fine without the mic. Powerful and inspiring voice! Truly gifted singer/person. God speed!
thank you so much.. this must have been when I was still a toddler ! How great and powerful it must have been to be there with all these powerful, faith-walking warrior saints. Thank you Jesus for our spirit-filled, faithful anscestors
