Good song and nice record player, but I got an EWF album today at Goodwill, it's the same album that "Trance88" has. I'm going to play the same song on my GE Wildcat.
On many occasions, on the underside of an old cartridge, the rubber needle support, or "canteleiver" hardens, thus not providing the proper cushioning for the needle to track properly, hence the rapid skipping.
I usually replaced the entire cartridge, and made sure that the canteleiver was soft and pliable.
This makes a huge difference, and records (including stereo) track very well, with virually no skipping whatsoever...
Could there be a compliance issue with the cartridge not able to track a stereo groove (if it is the original mono one)? Were you trying to play stereo records when it had the problem?
Hmmm... I always heard that stereo records work fine with mono units. Maybe some records are too loud for it or something. I don't have any mono records to try it with. I hope what ever it is that's making the tonearm jump and skip on some records can be fixed!
The older mono cartridges may not permit much or any vertical motion, just horizontal...with a stereo record there ends up being both horizontal and vertical motion of the stylus and a "non-compliant" mono cartridge can skip and even damage the grooves as it cannot properly respond to the vertical motion of the stylus.
my truetone mono record player has the same problem and the funny this is that it was made in 1977. i does have a stereo compatible needle in it. the cartridge seem fine.
It's really not very loud in person. I had it just about all the way up. After about 5 minutes of play the amp starts to distort. The caps are extremely bad on it.
I'm really glad to know that at least the speed on this one is dead on unlike the Zenith.
Oh yeah, definitely change those caps and also you might wanna get a tube tester to check the tubes for strength. If the amp distorts after 5 minutes of play, either the pre-amp or output tube is bad. I had that same problem with my VM too.
the case looks nice they are hard to find with the case not all beat up or mold on them

Wow, sounds more powerful than my '66 VM. I have the same issues with some of my players too like my 1977 Truetone and 1966 Zenith.
