My father was stationed there in the early to late 80's. Around the time of the chernobyl meltdown. Couldn't even go outside for a couple of weeks. Even though I was just a little army brat, it doesn't resemble the memories I have when my mother and I would go there to visit my dad when he was on duty. I remember those building right across from the entrance. I wish I could have been able to visit there before the buildings were demolished. Thank you sharing this.
You are correct, the 1AD took over when we (3AD) moved out and finally cased our colors. I had the privilege of attending the closing of the Ray Barrack Garrison in Friedberg in 2007 when the 1AD left.
Man that takes me back! it wasn't de-activated in 1992 though, I was stationed there with 2/3 FA from Oct 1991-Oct 1993. the base was transfered from 3rd AD to 1st AD somewhere in the mid november-early december 1991 but "the Rock" was open until atleast June 1995 because my best friend was still assigned to 2/3FA until his enlistment was up in June of 1995, Thanks for the trip back in time though! I Remember my time there fondly!
Thank you,i always wandered what they did to my old duty station. I was there from 1064 to 67. co.b, 2/36th. inf. como. personel driver,co. commanders driver m114. heavy wepon's plt. 4th. plt,hq plt. Mabe some of you guys remember me,tom shannon,
Man talk about memories, was stationed there 85-86 19E/K, 2/33 3rd Armor Bravo Company, went home during the Cohort with 2/5 Cav from Hood @teapartyty 1 was talking about, shioot prepping for Cohorts are no joke, one big FUBAR...
I started out in the 1st of the Sixth Infantry, B122 Maintenance, Hanau, then Clay Kaserne. I rode the trains every weekend to be with the band when I or them were not in the field. Cheyenne was the best to dance to!
I was stationed on the rock and taught photography at the photo lab once in a while. 1978-1982 I was the photographer for Herb's Band, Cheyenne, If you saw the band you probably saw me taking pictures. Rickdy Glenn played keyboard, Herb on lead, Tim Gardner was drummer, Bill was base, we had a great time playing at the Glass House in Friedberg and all over. A lady passed out when the strobe lights were rotating at the Glass House. We had a great time!
I came to the rock from Ft Hood 2/5 cav. Cohort move with 4/32 armor. Black Knights became Red Lions. I was a medic with HHC Scouts 1986/87? Lt. Bad Sam Phillips Scout Platoon leader. Good guys and tons of Beer.
@teapartyty Holy Cow.. I am going over there for a vacation next week and wanted to see if my old post existed.... so I started doing some research about it on the internet... came across this video... I was in the same Unit!! started with 2/5 Cav in killeen...and was Cohort.. and i think it was really close to your time frame....... I was and 11 C.... E-5 Seargent Donohue... I know i drank some beer!!..lol
Damned, when I remember back in the days and see it know, it reminds me on a postapokalyptical Movie. I was a lot a time in the Rock Video to buy some NTSC Tapes, now everything just look sad and deserted.
I was in 3/36th infantry.......Alpha company....also did some time as a U.P. When i arrived....was only 17 when I arrived...miss the ride to Frankfurt every month....
I too was statationed at the Rock from 1977 to 1980. i was a Scout with CSC 2/33
good times and bad but you made the best of what you had and it all turned out good
lots of bier & pizza. It felt like 100 yrs while i was there at the end i cried leaving my friends behind. I been looking for my friends for 30 yrs my name is Joe Flores aka
I was stationed there from 1973 - 77 C-Co 2/32nd Armor Duty really sucked back then. I had been in the Army 5 years when I arrived on the Rock including a tour in Vietnam. The good thing about the rock was I had a lot of good friends and had a lot of good German friends from Niederkleen and Butzbach Ive been back 6 times since my army days it sure has changed .. Everyone misses the activity that was there when 14,000 GI's were around .. But the food the beer (Bier) and the fun still exsists.
Sorry for those guys that came late. I was there 84-86 in 2/33. Got moved to brigade then to 2/3 scew, shit hole of the base. Those were some shit times but while at 2/33 I made great friends. I only see a couple of the guys now.
I went back in 1992 and the Rock had closed. I cried while there cause the emotions all came flooding in. What a "right of passage" we all experienced in those years.
My name is Sgt Ramirez and I served on "The Rock" from April 1977 to April 1980, I was in CSC 3/33 as a motor pool Sgt/Mechanic.
Viewing this video and others in the last 2 days brought up emotions I did not even realize I had buried inside of me. The Rock will always be a apart of me, both good and bad, fun and hard times.
I love the German pizza that you could purchase across the street at the gasthaus, Mmm :-)
I wish I could locate my mechanic room-mates that I roomed with in the CSC bld
I can remember before I left 1st Bde, 3AD, Colonel Gordon R. Sullivan was our brigade commander (eventually the Army Chief of Staff), LTC Ron Davis was the brigade XO, Maj Thomas R. Reed was the S-1 and I can't remember the S-3's name but he was a Maj M? and I believe he became the XO when LTC Davis departed and he was promoted to LTC also........A really good bunch of officers I would have followed into combat any time without hesitation............I learned alot from them.
I was there in the middle of 1977 (HHC 3/33 Armor "THE PICKLES"), worked in the S-1 and Legal. Participated with the Giessen AOA and officiated softball, flag football and even won some championships in Flag Football with HHC 3/33 Armor. Moved over to 3/36th Infantry Legal and then 1st Bde, 3AD Legal and finally over to Butzbach, 3AD Legal Office in the Castle before leaving in 1986. Sorry to see it changed....alot of good memories and friends........
I was stationed there from 1987 to 1991. I had a schatzi named Ute that everyone used to hit on at the Welcome Inn. I remember staying in that place until the sun came up. Opening those shutters to daylight was not a good sign for PT. I remember driving to post and having to open the door to the car to see the line on the road because the fog was so thick you couldnt see 2 inches in front of you and prayed their was no one stopped in the middle of the road. Always wondered how Ute is doing.
I was stationed there from 19-88-90 I was with C2/3 field artillary met a girl, married her and shes still the love of my life. weve been back twice since then.
I was stationed at The Rock from 86-88 in 1st Bde HHC as the Unit Armorer. My first tour on active duty. Drank my share of beer at the Welcome inn hehehe. It's too bad you couldn't get into the old base to get some shots. Kind of weird seeing the old businesses outside the front gate. It was always a good place to get something to eat late like a gyro or pomme frites. Good times.
The Bascheks were a wonderful family who showed an inordinate amount of hospitality to the "Amis" when it wasn't fashionable to do so. I hope they're all doing well now.
I was there from the beginning of 87 to the end of 89. I loved my experience there. Even when my little blue VW Beetle got run over by a 5-ton by the movie theater, I loved the place. I went back there in 95 or 96 just to see the place. I didn't have anything better to do while visiting friends in Hannover, so I drove down not knowing it had been shut down. I had jaeger-pommes at the Welcome Inn. A few beers...played pool, chatted with Susi. I was shocked that she actually remembered me.
I was at the Rock 84 - 86 at Dco 2/36 inf. I arrived a boy and left a man. I have many memories of this place. It brings back a lot of emotions. I served with some of the greatest guys i've ever met. Welcome Inn, Licher Beer... If you served there with me, find me on FB. Matt White
Damn....the gasthaus and guard shack bring back those memories!!! I was there 1982-84 A Co. 3/36 INF.....good times and bad....SP/4 Bob Taylor.....wheres the rest of you guys????
I drank & THREW UP my 1 st German Beer in that Orange Guest House. Glass Boot toe UP or Toe DOWN??? You 'member?LOL Used to be alot more stores at the front gate in the late 70s & early 80s!
Thanks for the memories! My family was stationed at Ayers from 74-77. We actually lived in the Gaust Haus across the street and the Bascheks were our landlords. They had trained german shepherds there at the kennels along with their own cleaners and gift shop. They had an older son and two young daughters, mom and dad and of course Oma and Opa. Very nice family. It's sad to see it in its current condition. But it did bring back some good memories. Thanks Roadking1970.
Hope your'e doing well. Have not been active on the 3AD web forum, talked with Bob Briggs last week. I have been busy with our Rolling Thunder Chapter, not much free time, with trying to keep my job and all.
I was there, arriving the day before Thanksgiving 1975. My wife was assigned to the 24th General Dispensary up in Giessen and I was assigned to the Medical Platoon, HHC 3/36 Infantry. I went out mostly with B Co 3/36 and good ol' SFC Williams and I became best buds. During the last two years there our battalion commander was LTC R. (for Romee) Lee Brownlee who was temporary Secretary of the Army during the last year of the second George W. Bush term. We were forced into housing after 18 mos.
Grunt, i was there in E-Co. from 84-86. Cue was the 1SG back then. Davis, Rhinehart, Burfict, and Dorsey was the PSG's. Working in E-Co was the hardest job i had in the Military.
I was a "mole digger" in SFC Burfict's 3rd platoon. He was awesome. Cue wasn't there when I got there, Lieske was. If I remember right, Cue got sent to HHC to be their 1SG. Do you remember Shtekot? He ended up being LtCol Beals' driver. He didn't have a lot of get up and go, but he was fascinating to talk to. He defected from Poland in the early 80's. Long live The Rock!
I remember MSG Cue, he was my platoon sergeant in S3. He retired and stayed in friedberg with his wife. I drove back in 97 when I was stationed in Vilseck. I love germany though. Came down on orders to be a drill sergeant and had to leave.
i was stationed way back from 1991-1992. too bad, the army did not honor my contract. i went back to ft knox , ky. hated it there. put me in an outfit called OPFOR. tanks i was not trained with, i get to drive it like the sheridan, we kicked officers ass though. lol. anyway, ayers brings fond memories. wish i was back in germany.
As long as I live, I will never forget this place. Some of the wosrt and best days of my life were spent there. I was a kid when I got there and the man I am today because of it. Stationed from 82 to 84 before came back to the sates. Made lifetime friends there. Glad someone took this video. if you been there this place will never leave you. Who can forget going to bed (drunk as hell) at 3 am only to hear the lovely ALERT siren to make the next few day even more miserable. God bless the USA
No, not just rosy comments, but the FU comments were a little extreme. We got your message that you hated it there and respect your right to feel the way you do.
Yes indeed. That place was nothing more than a slave labor camp interspersed with field training and range practice. It churned out alcoholics. It created dependent lifers. I hated being subjugated to a bunch of ignorant two-faced, cheese eating, power tripping wannabes, guys who ordinarily wouldn't qualify to flip a burger for me let alone tell me what to do. At least I'm honest. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. Being in the infantry was nothing like a rear echelon mos.
I hated the rock too. I was an infantry man not a mail clerk, but I tell you what when I left that place I knew I was a different man because of it. I did appreciate the life lessons learned there. to this day I treasure the eperiences I had during those years. not all was bad. lets not forget the Schatzis..... love Germany and their culture
Wow! Its good to see that old chapel again. Was there 72-73. Was in the first baricks on left just as you went in the gate. Played music in the Chapel for services on Sunday. Radio teletype operator, worked in the message center in the HQ building. I was just telling my kids about this not two weeks ago. I'll have to show them this! Thanks for the memories!!!!!
I was stationed at the "Rock" 1973-1976. 3/36 Inf. Was Bn Mail clerk...was my growing up years...had a Harley my last year..how many have seen Germany on a Harley..Really had a good time....
Lord what memories I have there...I was with 2/3 FA(Fist)....I will never forget. It was my home for three years. Even though I was 33 years old when I arrived at Ayers, this is where I really grew up...What a "Time Trip" this was...Lord I miss it.......how ironic now!!!
Oh man, they changed the name of the Brickhous to Second Hour! I was there in early 1996 before Bosnia and then late 1996 before Ayers Kaserne closed and we moved to Giessen US Depot. Those were the good ol's days of great beer with great people. Prost!
Thanks for the video. I was stationed at the Rock on 1/1984-8/1985 with Delta co. 2/32 Ar Bn. Winter in 1985 was cold, but had alot of good memories.
I was there from May '85- Jan '87 in Echo, 2/36 Infantry. I don't miss the motor pool, I don't miss freezing my ass off in Hohenfels and Graf, to say nothing of REFORGER. Yet, I still have fond memories of my time in the Army at The Rock. Can anybody explain that to me?
@winfieldscotthancock I was there also 79-82 and was also in 3/36 but i was in B company just in from of thr parade field and the last building on the right. i had some of my best and worst days there. anyone remember 1st SGT Ramada? i think he had to be the best 1st i had in my 13 year career
The Rock was my very first duty station back in 1987. HHC 4-32 AR. The Red Lions! Good times back then. We used to go to the Imbis Stand to get something to eat before we rolled to Giessen to the Woodland and The Big Apple nightclubs. Aw man, this goes way back! The "death runs" our CO used to take us on, pulling guard at the back gate, or making that drive to Graff and Hohenfels! I'm going to miss the Rock!
Armored...the Barracks are across from the Fire Station and the Cinema ( Theatre) when you remember...my Husband stationed there as Sgt from 1978-1982 Oct.
hi, i remembered good old Ayers Kaserne, I served there with Delta Company 2/32 armor from 1/91 -6/92.Its a small place, i usually go to Giessen or Friedberg. Ill comeback there someday with my family.
We are currently negotiating with Bork to have the "Rock" put back next to the Chapel. It was removed and transported to Ray Barracks, when Ayers de-activated in the late 90's.
Roadking; please go back and make another visit. I was there last in 2002. I don't care what it looks like...just want to reminisce. I want to go back someday and just stay for awhile in the area(maybe Butzbach, were I spent a lot of time.
I was stationed on "The Rock" from 80 - 83 in Aco 3/36 INF. I loved the lasagna from the gasthaus across the street especially on those winter nights when I pulling guard duty. I remember hating it while I was there, but now it seems sad to see it in mothballs.
To fully appreciate the Rock you needed to go around to the back gate and the hill. I ran up and down that hill more times then I care to remember.
Thanks for the video and the stroll down memory lane.
I am planning on returning in May of this coming Spring and trying to get prior approval to get on the grounds and video what is left. They wouldn't let me on last year.
I too tried to gain access to my old barraks, I coild see the building from the main gate. My hair stood up as I got chills remembering, I was there 1965-1967. 2nd. Bn. 3rd. Heard
I was litterally with the last group of 12 soldiers that came thru "the rock" for inprocessing into the 1st Bde. of the 1st AD back in 1997. From there we were sent to Friedberg. Thanks for the memories, great work!
Thanks for posting the video Roadking. I was on The Rock with Co C 2/32 Armor from '71 to '74. It's s shame you weren't able to get inside the gate.I would have loved to be back inside The Rock... if only for a little while. It's also a shame it's in the sad shape it's in today. But, the Russians are starting to show their asses again, so who knows!?
thanks for your video.I was stationed at giessen army depot from 2002-sept. 2005 and was put on a mission to take the rock from Ayers Kaserne to giessen depot in 2004.And that is where it still is today.Unfortunatly Giessen has also know closed.
thanks a lot for the memories.I enjoyed it very much brought back so many memories I was stationed at 3/5 cav HARDROCK CHARLY from 91 to 93. Yea the blue crystal & the brick.spc rivera.
Thanks for the video ROADKING 1970.I was stationed at AYERS KASERNE from 87-90 attached to HHC 2/32.Sure gave me some memories just looking thru the front gate of the "ROCK".thank you very much for this video..... "ROCK ON READY FIRST"
Gives me shiver bumps, I was there from 1977 to 1980,3/33 armor, I worked at Neffs Saloon as a cook on off days in town, must of went thru that gate a thousand times, remember about 5 of em....thanks for the memories!!!
I lived in the castle on Schloss....my roomate and I were the last Americans off the post and moved to the Rock. 1991....I hold that distinction! :)
We moved to 2/3rds Barracks (I was 733rd Med Det). Married my Girlfiend Ramona and moved to Langons....Loved Germany..wished I had done more when I was there aside from chasing tail... ;)
Wow! Pretty crazy. I was stationed there from 1/90 to 12/91 with 3/5 cav. ( A co , 1st platoon.) I look at this and am surprised at my reaction of being sad by its demise. I guess I really did have some great times there. Certainly spent my time with some incredible individuals while there. Where I became a man for sure, at 18 years old. Thanks for putting this up, it was cool to see what it's like now. Spearhead!
Hi! I am from Wetzlar, which is close to Kirchgoens and used to go to the Welcome Inn to hang out, play pool and have fun in 1990-1994. My girlfried SUSI used to work there. Maybe somebody remembers us??? Would be great to here from you then!!! Regards, KERSTIN (38)
Holy crap, I was there from 88-90 and i remember Susi, we used to call her the "gap monster"...........where the hell is she today? We also referred to the Welcome Inn as the "Stumble In".
We have a Chat here called *WKW* wer -kennt -wen* I have a Blog there and If i know who you mean with *Susi* may will find here ..in my Blog are many old Friends from The Ayers (The Rock) I was there from 1986-1996 *My Husband where also stationed there from 1978-1982..please contact me* thank`s
I was there for a short stint myself in the early 90s. Anyone know if the Welcome Inn, & the building next to it (same style) are still open ? If so, looks like they do not get much buisness anymore.
Thanks so much for the video! I worked on "The Rock" from 81 to 84 as a civilian in the Rec center. I have fond memories of many wonderful people that came through the craft shop. It makes me incredibly sad to think it is all gone now.
thanks for your video.......We went back ( wife and I)to Germany in May of 07 and had a wonderful time reminiscing and visiting old watering holes there and in Langgoens where we lived. 10 Uhland Strasse. I was with the 2/32 Armor Division from 1970 thru 1971. I fondly remember the night my best friend (Ed Radu)drove right thru battalion Maintenance and had to sleep there for weeks till it was secured D.Arbaugh
This video takes me back in time. I was stationed with C 2/33 AR. from 1980 to 1982. The gate for the rail head is still there. The taxi stand and the Mox Nix store is in this video. The guesthouse is still there. I only ever ate there 2 times and both times the food was bad. I hated the place back then but I have good memories now. Too bad most of it is gone. 3rd AD forever.
Thanks Roadking, I'm German,I was born and raised in Wetzlar,I'm sure afew of you recall. I moved to the states in '88 and been here ever since. Boy do I have memories of of that place, the Welcom Inn, etc... kinda looks like a Ghost town now. So much fun. Still have a Brother in Wetzlar, but rest of my Family moved away so when I go back don't really go back there anymore. So thank you so very much for the memories!!!
I was stationed at Ayers Kaserne from 1987 to 1990 with 2/3 FA...Fist!! I have many fond memories...I believe this is were I really became a man, even though I was already about
33 years old when I arrived there. I went through orientation at Schloss Kaseren in Butzbach and fell in love with the German teacher with blonde hair and blue eyes...what a knock-out!!! Anyway I am sad and blue to see the Rock a mere shadow of itself and I feel the ghosts of Ayers Kaserne past.. I mean that!!
Thanks! I was with the 2/36th Inf. on the Rock 1972-74. Lived in Niederkleen. The trucking company wasn't there and across the road from the main gate only the two brick buildings (the gasthaus where I first had Jaegerschnitzel) and a taxi stand existed. After entering the main gate, I took the first right, went past the pizza stand, NCO Club and bowling alley, and my barracks was the next to the last building on the left before the street curved to the left and went past the library.
Thanks RoadKing- I was in 2/32 Armor back in 93-94 till I went to Friedburg. Remember Sandra from the Welcome Inn? aka Welfare Inn? I'd miss "Ma" and her Juger Pommes Fries. And the Imbiss Stand with the Real Gyros with Sieta Sauce. Anybody remember the AIDS scare??? How about the summer of free beer when that lovely girl didn't have HIV??? Those were the days.
Thanks for the video. I was with D Co 3/5 CAV from 92-94, and used to have an apartment above the Welcome Inn. It was a blast, and the best post I've been stationed at. Thanks again, Chad "Rob" Robinson
Was at Ayers from Aug 91 to Nov 93 with 3/5 Cav. At that time, our barracks were the first set of buildings across from the Chapel and the Blue Crystal Club. Had hoped to go back there someday and visit. I was sad to learn that the base closed in 97 and has been torn down. Glad to see "The Welcome Inn" is still there, met a lot of great people there. Any idea what the base is being used for these days? Did you visit the Welcome Inn, now called "Second Home"? Thanks for the updated video.
We were three Swedish 18 year-olds that had the time of our lives at "The Rock" in the summer of -94! 'Til this day we haven't found a place like "The Blue Crystal" and "The Brickhouse"!
That brought back some memories. Some foggy...some like it was yesterday. I was there 74-75. I have heard they trashed most of the buildings on the Kaserne. I just read that Axle Rose (Guns & Roses) was stationed there in the early 80's.
thomasharris; that's the story I heard too. I was there from 87 to 90 and everyone said that Axle Rose was there...He has an infantry tatoo on his left arm I believe...so I believe its true...
Thanks so much for the visit. I was at Ayers from 1976-79.Wow I remember I used to go through that gate many times.Ate a few times in that guesthouse too. Thanks Roadking! "The Rock"
I was in A co 3/33rd 83-85. I miss that place.

Damned, when I remember back in the days and see it know, it reminds me on a postapokalyptical Movie. I was a lot a time in the Rock Video to buy some NTSC Tapes, now everything just look sad and deserted.

Good times.

Working in E-Co was the hardest job i had in the Military.
bufict 2 years ago
I was a "mole digger" in SFC Burfict's 3rd platoon. He was awesome. Cue wasn't there when I got there, Lieske was. If I remember right, Cue got sent to HHC to be their 1SG. Do you remember Shtekot? He ended up being LtCol Beals' driver. He didn't have a lot of get up and go, but he was fascinating to talk to. He defected from Poland in the early 80's. Long live The Rock!

What, we're only supposed to have rosy comments about this? I hated the Rock.
Ireg2post1 2 years ago
No, not just rosy comments, but the FU comments were a little extreme. We got your message that you hated it there and respect your right to feel the way you do.
Roadking1970 2 years ago
Ireg2post1 2 years ago
I hated the rock too. I was an infantry man not a mail clerk, but I tell you what when I left that place I knew I was a different man because of it. I did appreciate the life lessons learned there. to this day I treasure the eperiences I had during those years. not all was bad. lets not forget the Schatzis..... love Germany and their culture

The trucking company wasn't there and across the road from the main gate only the two brick buildings (the gasthaus where I first had Jaegerschnitzel) and a taxi stand existed.
