You could both be right. The last paragraph of the Wikipedia page on concert pitch says that it's quite common to play baroque music a semitone lower, so D minor would sound like C# minor.
I love hearing the smaller works appear in concerti. For example, with Bach, in this first movement I hear his Violin Sonata #1 in B minor first movement and I love it
Rarely did Bach write such charming pieces as this one... It's as if it's written in the 20th century rather than in baroque era! I liked it the very first time I heard it, 15 years ago by a tape, on my bed, noon!
You people who keep saying "it's too fast" are simply diehard Romantics who crave the enigmatically slow tempos favored by symphony orchestras whenever they tackle Baroque music in their typically well-intentioned but clueless manner.
You would turn every Baroque slow movement into a dreamy-eyed lullaby.
I love this piece. I love putting it on while it's raining outside. Then I stand at a window and evaluate my life in deep thought with my hands clasped behind my back. Try it!!
well you see, old musicians like to play fast because they do not want to risk dieing in the middle of the performance. lol. No, baroque is theorized to be played fast because back then the string players bows were not powerful enough to sustain loud long notes or accents.
In the 1st place, the tempo here is not at all fast. It's comparable to the tempo used by 5 other groups. (FYI, people who knew Bach said he liked fast tempos!)
And how long a bowed note can be sustained has nothing to do with the "power" of the bow. A bow has only length and weight. No bow has any power at all.
when you said: "No, baroque is theorized to be played fast because back then the string players bows were not powerful enough to sustain loud long notes or accents." And I did respond to that.
But my other comments about tempo were not directed at you. I inserted them in the wrong place in the thread. Nevermind :)
I was quite surprised to see that someone had given your comment a negative rating. I can only hope that whomever did so objected only your referring to Bach's preludes as "machine-like", and not to your praise of this supremely beautiful piece of music.

The A for baroque is not at 440hz, so that synth of yours will sound out of tune if you play along these airs...

why do people who like metal always seem to post that they enjoy 'classical' music as well? I fail to see any parrellels between the two genres.

You should listen to more Bach and other baroque music... You'll find plenty

I've made a whole playlist of that, but thanks. I found out that Marcello's oboe concerto bears some resemblance to the masterpiece above!

@ensimon Yes, it sounds very un-baroque. It is totally amazing, even though I love the baroque. Such emotions expressed in this piece of music!

Yes. This movement is used in an Italian movie from the 60's by P. P. Pasolini called "Accattone" ("The Beggar", or something along those lines).
