  • Great vintage video of Sensei Katsuya Miyahira. With no doubt one of the greatest masters of Karate, respected by all styles and martial arts schools.

I agree with several people on this post: This Kata is Passai Sho, and since Miyahira Sensei does Karate Shorin Ryu Shidokan (Shidokan is actually the way he named his Dojo in Okinawa, that it is still open, in charge of his highest rank students)

  • If it's true Miyahira sensei passed away 2 week's ago. what a sad day for okinawan kata-te.

  • Can someone please tell me the exact translation of Patsai dai? thnx

  • My previous post was a bit confusing:

    Shidokan version...............Shotokan version

    Passai Sho(Itosu)...............Passai Dai

    Koryu Passai........................Passai Sho

    Passai Dai (Matsumura)...no version

  • @tatetsuki mate! the shotokan version is bassai sho not passai and its different coz bassai is a japanese oriented not okinawan. koryu passai is different kata as

well. im ryan a shidokan shorin ryu karateka from philippines and singapore.

Osu to you my friend! cheers!

  • @artyane Funakoshi Gichin Sensei, the creator of Shotokan, studied Karate Do with Itosu Anko Sensei in Okinawa, and learnt the Passai katas, worked on them, renaming them Bassai. Passai Sho, was called Bassai Dai by Funakoshi Sensei: THIS is the kata on this video;

Bassai Sho of Shotokan is evidently related to Koryu Passai( or Passai Gwa) which has survived mainly in Miyahira Sensei's Shidokan and Shimabukuro Sensei's Seibukan. The patterns are evidently similar.

  • Chibana Sensei's lineage-----Shotokan Passai Sho --------------------- Patsai Dai

Koryu Passai---------------------Passai Sho Matsumura no Passai.

It is a bit confusing, but THIS kata is Passai Sho in Shidokan, and Patsai Dai in Shotokan and Japanese ryu.

  • There are three Passai/Patsai/Bassai kata in Miyahira Sensei's Shidokan: Passai Sho, Passai Dai and Koryu Passai. Chibana Sensei kept a version of Matsumura no Passsai following Itosu Sensei's advice, which he called Passai Dai; Itosu no Passai became Passai Sho-THIS is the kata on this video. Shidokan's Koryu Passai is called Passai Sho in Shotokan.

  • That's interesting, thanks

  • McCarthy Sensei . This isn't Passai Dai , but Passai Sho .

    Peace .

  • it's know in some Shorin ryu styles as Matsumura Pai Sai, I don't think Pai Sai Sho in any styles, now a day, you never can tell.

  • これはパッサイ小ですね。

    宮平先生の若い時の動画は初めてみました。

    ありがとうございます。。

  • This is Passai sho of Kobayashi.. Isn't it McCarthy Sensei?

  • I prefer Higa Yuchoku's performance. Thanks for posting this.

  • this kata is known as bassai dai in itosu ryu karate
