@mrkenusa I agree, but it's interesting that Tony Bennett wanted her for HIS album (Duets II). I engineering magic going on, she sang well with Tony (you'd better or he'd boot you out of the studio!)...
Arguably the best jazz ensemble ever put together. I've never heard such precision, tasteful expression and relaxed delivery. What a treasure we have in these recordings. Thankyou for sharing them.
@lesterwyoung: You hit the bull's eye. This little piece is simply unsurpassable. I remember listening to this 40 years ago, over and over again, because I wanted to learn how to make a soft sound and a good vibrato, at the same time swinging, imitating Benny Morton's trombone.
you have to have some dislikes, otherwise its not perfect like the intentional crack tea cup masters put. some people just dislike, there will always be one or some or many, who knows why? each has their reason, which works well enough for them to dislike, so they do. yes, so it seems to me is why it is
Kit Kittredge ftw. Anyway I'd prefer this to today's music - I do listen to Katy Perry and similar stuff sometimes, but songs nowadays are just plain trashy.
This is the Billie Holiday I love- ebullient, joyous, and having one hell of a good time in a recording studio- I always found her late recordings like listening to someone dying, which I suppose it was. Lester brought out the best in her, and his solo here- turning the whole melody inside out and booting it around- brilliant. If I had my choice of time over again, it would be somewhere like this- earning enough money to keep a roof over my head, and being PAID to play this kind of music!
If perfection was ever achieved in jazz music this has to be it. Eight musicians (I include Billie in that designation) at the very top of their game and in balance with each other, relaxed and magnificent. Lester never played a better solo than the one he does here. I've been listening to this for over fifty years and the imagination and conception of the man still astound me.
love you forever Billie....

But one question: Are you sure, it's Buck Clayton on trumpet? This sounds very much like Roy Eldridge.
