I live in Japan and now Japan has GDP equal to 1955 level. They are having huge communication problems in the factories in China and are having huge problems competing with Chinese companies. The quality of their products have dropped in recent years, they invent few new things and tend to copy stuff, but unfortunately Chinese are now better at copying stuff.
Overall, Japanese DO tend to save more money, but in recent years more Japanese have been gambling away savings at Pachinko parlors.
@davidluk8 and yet Japan's debt isn't nearly as big as USA's debt in dollars. Plus USA has a debt to pretty much everyone, while Japan's debt is internal and lended roughly 760$ billions to USA.
In my opinion, for those that really like Japan, which I personally considered a fascinating country: What we actually need to do to make Japanese economy increase is to buy their products, I mean cars, electronics,etc... or at least japanese branches
You see, to begin with unlike the West (Europe and America) most Asian countries never really had the benefit if not luxury of land space so unlike you land-abundant Westerners we learn to do, and more, with less.
Obscenely large tracts of unused or underused land, are strange and alien to our eyes.
The "Japan Miracle" was over by the end of the 80's. Back then American economic intellectuals thought that Japan would become a superpower that would rival the US. However, the Japanese economy collapsed heavily in the 90's. Today, Japan is loosing its economic status everyday because their entire economy relies on exports and due to the recession, no country can afford its expensive exports. Japan is still an awesome country though, Took a trip to Osaka back in 07- Very different then Canada.
If not, I also consider things made in the USA, UK and Singapore as near-comparable quality though that's even rarer (to find things made in those countries outside of assembly).

Why US is in trouble? That's because presenter of this video can hardly read from the teleprompter without making errors...
Maybe he should replace an illegal migrant in the fields of California....
