  • AB: Att. Seekers (19-45) 2011NY - Ostentatious/ Muttt Walkers [] DNI [] •?•

  • haha is that richard branson?

  • WARHORSE song

  • I like XTC more than Adam Ant ;x

  • ...an all-time FAVE! XTC is awesome and always will be! Wahi'

  • Actually this was an innovative video. A good one, and an upbeat tempo song. Foot-tapping melody and rythm.

  • very epic ending )

  • Calling Generals.... and Majurrrrrrs ....love the Wiltshire accent. Also the guitar reminds me of Altered Images.

  • this is so baddddd

  • Wow, loved this song but had no idea there was a video. Fun and bizarre.

  • I remember rockin to this drivin around L.A. back in the 80s in my rusty but loved wire wheeled 1966 MGB. What a great time great music and shit happening even with the proliferation of the hair bands. Rodney on the Roq was the saving grace along with Dr Demento.... XTC was really waaaay ahead of all the other idiots on the airwaves in so many ways. The great bands that are especially memorable and missed were the Cars, Dead Kennedys and Oingo Boingo....what a time!!! Today is shitville

  • @Karnakdmagnificent There are three newer bands I enjoy that aren't known by everyone. They are The Shout Out Louds, The New Pornographers and Flipron. Maybe you'll like them? Song recommendations - Shout Out Louds: "Please Please Please" The New Pornographers - "The Bleeding Heart Show" and Flipron - "The Man Who Was Eaten By A Pie"

  • cold war themes. great alternative rock before that class of music was ruined by grunge and hip hop weirdos.

  • A young Mr Branson

  • @juliawww

xtc recorded for virgin, so it was bransons video in the first place. the meeting referred to wasnt in a bar, it was most likely at his house regarding their contract.

when this came out i thought it was their weakest album, but of course this is all relative to the previous white music, go 2, and drums and wires, which were amazing in the 70s. still are.

  • Safe to say, I'm glad I share the same birthday as Colin Moulding.

  • One of the best songs ever written

  • Yes a fantastic song that still sounds fresh today

  • there are 2 main singers of xtc, constant thru the entire tenure:1st andy partridge, vocals on "dear god", "ballad of peter pumpkinhead". 2nd:colin moulding, lead on this song, "wonderland" and "king for a day".

  • Great song,love XTC.

  • Richard Branson

  • nice^^

  • Love this video...what a gas that Richard Branson is in it and it's his estate! Wonder if they all met up in a bar by chance meeting with Branson, "Hey, do you want to be in our video?"

  • Ive always thought the lyrics were so right on for * our times

  • Swindon Boys. Talent!

  • 0.07 is that Robin Williams? Gee looks similar! -Daz in Oz.

  • Beach Boys > Beatles > XTC

  • Love this song! I may only be 15, but my mum made me listen to it lol

  • Wow...simply put. This trac takes me back to college...non of my friends had a clue!!! 4 thumbs-up!!=D

  • Everytime I see this video, I say well that guy over there looks just like Branson! Well he is! I was a little kid when this video came out but I instantly liked it. It's my first

xtc song with lots of special memory. thanks for posting it

  • Is XTC still around ?

  • @essertpitay They broke up in 2005. I don't know all the details but Dave Gregory left in 1999 and the story goes that Colin didn't want to make music by 2005 so that left only Andy in the band and he said he won't continue XTC without Colin.

  • @101Volts I read somewhere that Andy developed panic disorder after trying to stop taking his long-time valium prescription too fast without a doctor helping him. It said that he developed panic disorder and was having a lot of trouble performing so he had to stop anyway. He still worked in production after that, though.

I think it might have been wikipedia so who knows.

  • sHEER GENIUS, WITH RELEVANCE TODAY TO IRAQ AND aFGANISTAN mR. BRANSON! These lads are tits up tops in the music world. Brillant!

  • it's shorter than the version i've always known

  • Classic KROQ!

  • most famous band to come out of swindon... just sayin'

  • This is truly freakin' epic. XTC was one of the greatest "thinking man's" pop bands of all time.

  • @KarlSteinmann Absolutely. They should have been huge.

  • 30 dislikes? Show your faces, you scum...

  • Moulding & Partridge were quite brilliant.. 30 + years later, the music still sounds fantastic and fresh.

  • I lost my 'virginity' to this song!

  • @MisterKamikazi 3 mins and 46 seconds? ;)

  • @MisterKamikazi all that in under 4 minutes, sweet

  • @thenewfella1994 I think its the beard...

  • How the fuck did they persuade Branson to appear in this video?

  • @MrBirdy7 Well, Virgin was his record label at the time and this is his estate in the video.

  • Colin you are a star. Bravo Bravo

  • On numbers like this, XTC sounded like The Moody Blues of New Wave! Bravo!

  • Looks like they had a lot of fun making this video...

  • siempre me gusto mas la etapa up y divertida de los primeros 4 discos de XTC

  • the 30 people who dislike this have no taste.UM...but Richard Branson is a total wanker also.

great song, great band and come the revolution we shall all jump on jumpy castles with our guitars held up proudly brothers and sister!

  • the 30 people who dislike this have no taste.UM...but Richard Branson is a total wanker also.

    great song, great band.

  • Sgt Rock is going to help them

  • Cameo by the late Jan Smutts @ 3:46

  • Never trust a hippie!!!

  • love the lifestyle back then. Freaking people would just spend hours looking at nothing = =".

  • The one thing I'll never forgive Sir Richard Branson for is locking up XTC's back catalog.

  • @markdykeman he's an Oxford fan, so I guess that explains it.

  • Peculiar indeed. Who TF lives in a Manor? haha.

  • @vanmuzak Batman

  • Love XTC, their sound reminds me of the Beatles sometimes, here's another band called Luce, nice track called "Buy a Dog" youtube.com/watch?v=2acYxdU-POw

  • This video really was symbolic of XTC's relationship with Virgin records. Branson was the pimp and they was da ho's!

  • love this band and there videos...really fun...check out our video channel if u get a chance

  • Colin Moulding is ridiculously good looking.

  • Sir Richard Branson in this one .very cool!!

  • Blur are to XTC, what Oasis are to the Beatles.

  • @kingligger Agreed!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Always loved the off-the-cuff quickie videos as opposed to the big budget fake spectacles; and this one was always one of my favorites. The world is a better place for XTC (and the Dukes Of Stratosphear, of course...)

  • Richard Branson on the flying fox.

  • I love the middle acoustic and the bouncy castle too.

  • And of course the lead singer was afraid of crowds.

    100% true :-(

  • The slow mo castle bounce during the slow part(breakdown) is SO stunning both visually and audibly. The slow part is just excellent all around no matter what you see while listening!

  • Did someone call for a General?

    Here I is!

    And a Major?

    Here I is too!

Generally, I'm a Major you know what!

    Great Song Nonetheless!!!

  • Was downloading a Jona Lewie track from iTunes and it recommended this–bloody awesome track! Sounds fresh! Could have been made yesterday

  • @MrLuRICo Dig deeper into the catalog - I swear if you know good music you're on the precipice of a treasure trove of it.

  • lol at richard branson in this video

  • dont know chinese or japenese whatever XTC is my band for the late 70 till the mid 80 and my son his name is Nigel. Who cares!

  • these guys are in league with the Beatles

  • I think about these guys whenever I hear horrid brit pop these days. XTC are what every shithouse act these days aspires to be.

    But will never be.

  • What about Captains and Colonels?

  • このメロディーが頭から離れない。最高のポップ!

  • this beat is kinda of bitch to play right!

  • I used to listen to Skylarking a lot (on a cassette!) quite a bit. I know this song is from a different album but seeing this vid has brought back some memories. Thanks for posting.

  • brilliant song that has stood the test of time

  • Say what you like about generals and majors, but at least they make Virgin Trains run on time. Oh, wait a sec.

  • Yep that's Branson. The video was shot and the album recorded on his estate.

  • Yep that is definitely Branson. The video was shot and the recorded recorded on his estate.

  • Richard Branson in this video?

  • @Feisty1967 Bet you ain't even listened to the rest.

  • When I listened to XTC in high school I loved it, never really knew how heavy and just plain fricken awesome they were!

  • Seeing Sir Richard Branson here is a real hoot! And de-bagged, no less!

  • Seeing Sir Richard Branson here is a real hoot!

  • Agreed...we did an Independent Radio show from 83-86 and XTC was a favorite.

  • Just awesome.......

  • They DO get recognition from those that matter - take it as a blessing they were never turned into Top 40 fodder!

  • @TheDeadlyDelilah Only this matters...get recognition from those who really are music lovers and not top of the pops casual trendies....

  • What a timeless classic this song! So very British.

  • Love it!!! Grammar School rock at it's best!!!

  • XTC is such a good band and not enough people know about them. I'm 18 and I've been listening to them with my dad since I was born!

  • Richard Branson ripped XTC.. .Nice guy... how about CUNT!

  • Typical in the time. Makers of music with a little sophistication are met with only moderate recognition. Junk sells. These guys are awesome.

    Peace.

  • trust lord virgin to stick his nose in, still it was his record company i suppose!

xtc were such a talented group of individuals, as a band they were sublime, what a shame that they weren't able to tour as i feel they would have got the public recognition they deserve.

  • perpetually and enormously under-rated . . . . one of the three great post punk pop acts along with Talking Heads and The Buzzcocks . . . . te he he . . . I said 'cock' . . .

  • such a silly song, it's really nice though.

  • It is Very important to also point out their whistleing prowess.

Not something you see everyday and a lost and dieing art.

    Alien Lion

  • @alienlion Yes it's amazing. I thought that art died when my dad did (he was the most awesome whistler lol) It's great to hear these guys whistle so in tune - it is a dying art and not as easy as people think to hold such perfect notes when doing so

  • Is that Richard Branson in the vid? The third general shown in the vid.

  • @Thesnapshot05 Yes, it is--before he became super-famous.

  • And none of the"generals" or "majors" is wearing correct insignia. Branson is wearing captain's pips.

  • "Your World War Three is drawing near."

    Indeed.

  • Every song by this band should have been clicked on multiple millions of times already. (Sigh)

  • @eva89117 Absolutely.....very underrated.....great musicians :)

  • "It's always ho-ho, chortle-chortle with Dickie Branson, isn't it.."

    - --JOHN LYDON

  • Definitely Branson. They were on Virgin Records at the time.................and kinda did a loose and well, very loose video with him. He played along quite well. Love the drum line...............this the only song that made Billboard 100................least that's what someone in the know told me.

Not Nigel, Not Dear God..........but Generals and Majors. LOVE this song.

  • jajajaj que gran cancion que gran video que gran grupo tenia que ser ochentas!!!!

  • bouncy castle!

  • am i allow to swear ? ( yes! ) FUCKING BRILLIANT.

  • Remember this from top of the pops back in the day - I thought I'd imagined the bouncy castle scene but there it is. Probably be banned now for daring to show a gun.

  • And I'm afraid prove very prophetic, Knepperify1.

    "WWIII is drawing near! ...Woaooooooh!"

    Hope I'm wrong.

  • Pure genius

  • why can't people make music like this anymore?

  • @Ergreenthumb People can but its not always heard.

  • The powers that be shall crumble even.......XTC Rules!!

  • hard to believe this was made in 1980!

  • Is this Richard Branson at 0:11??? From nothing to billionaire in 25 years?

  • @BigCaseDaddy

It is him. He was hardly nothing in 1980 though! He owned Virgin Records and The Manor, a stately home and studio in Oxford, where this was filmed.

  • @BigCaseDaddy that's exactly who I just saw, viewing this clip. If it isn't Richard Branson, then it's his double.

  • @MsDragon1968 It's Branson.

  • @BigCaseDaddy I noticed that too and looked it up on Wikipedia. Yes it is him. He was one of the founding members of virgin records and put himself in a cameo role. He hasn't aged much in thirty or so years. It looks so much like he does now that I thought it had to be a lookalike, but it actualy is him.

  • Troggs from Andover, Hampshire. XTC from Swindon, Wiltshire. About 40 miles difference, but the accents are quite similar.

  • XTC were signed to Virgin, thats why Richard is there........ His manor was the recording studio............ need to update your info !

    Love the track XX

  • Ooooooooarrrrrrrrrr! Bet ee's not fra Pen'ill!!!

  • Colin Mouldling, singing with a Wiltshire accent. Excellent.

  • @martindowland never before of since? wasnt that troggs guy from those parts? wild thing!!

  • As a little kid I always remember hearing this on the radio and loving the chorus and the whistling. Funny thing is that most whistling drives me up the bloody wall, but this still sounds good and not annoying.

Lol - you can so tell this was made at the last minute, there's no real idea to the whole clip, just random shit. But then again, that's cool - the humor and the lack of seriousness is great.

  • Rock is fun! Greetings from PL.

  • Best band since the Beatles in my opinion. So good our band was named Generals and Majors. Yes we did a few covers. Funny thing was every time we played the paper was list us as " Majors and Generals"

  • Comment removed

  • awesome song. video is a big piece of 80s cheese...

  • hey guys, avenginglotus is 52 so let nature take its course

  • Good old Colin!

  • Why would XTC want to be compared to such mediocrities as the beetles....If that is who you meant, you troglodyte who can't even spell the name of the band you so slavishly worship. The Beetles appealed to the banality of the asses, Oh, I'm sorry, I meant "masses", I just got sidetracked thinking of you.

  • @avenginglotus what a dick

  • @RadioFreeFrodo Spoken like a true intellectual!- succinct and to the point, I would debate the point, but I refuse to have a battle of wits with someone who is so clearly without weaponry.

  • @avenginglotus i liked the brilliant masses/asses pun you used - also spoken like a true intellectual

  • @RadioFreeFrodo P.S . THE BEETLES SUCK!!!!! (just a little something you will comprehend)

  • @avenginglotus avenginglotus... more like assclenchinghopiss amirite?

  • @Bellmeazy no,more like, wrapyourlipsroundthis! ckscr!

  • @avenginglotus in addition, take your own advice and learn how to spell the "beetles", also known as the beatles, you massive dunce cap. id like to chip away a bit at your colossal ignorance by letting you know that @PAULLONDEN is from the netherlands. perhaps they spell the beatles differently in nonenglish speaking nations?

  • @RadioFreeFrodo Beetles, beaetles, bietels........They Still SUCK, and are not worth my condescension to learn which they are. Two down, two to go!!!

  • @ 1:31 is so funny

  • Poor no xTc ....still in their cozy warm Branson days. he's still fuming over the million he lost on these Bietel wannabees.

The fact that some people still keep comparing this band with those giants ,show they've got no clue.

Sgt. Rock (Branson) .ain't gonna help'm anymore.

  • @PAULLONDEN Bietel?

  • @royayersrules

    By way of speaking......;]

  • I spotted Richard Branson in the vid, who was the chairman of Virgin Records at the time, who XTC were signed to, so they were obviously taking the mick out of their boss, and Richard, being a good sport went along with it in good spirit. Great song as well.

  • Love XTC---this one reminds me of Bombs Away from the Police :) Written good :)

  • I love this song.

  • Just saw an interview with Andy Partridge where he said he thought this was one of the worst music videos ever made. I think it's hilarious!

  • They were one of the biggest bands of the 80's...for certain demographics. If you check out the charts of the time, they were in the college radio top ten many times here in the U.S.

  • Richard Branson??? Actually in this video???? Oh my God!!!!
