  • @kenjames64 Thank you for posting this. It means a lot to hear and see all these legends jam, and I come away from this a changed person.

  • is a conn 10m tenor saxophone?

  • 7:57 ella quotes anthropology :D

  • Wow, Prez sure doesn't need alot of cork does he? ;3

  • Quien es el trombonista?

    Who is the trombone?

    C'est qui le tromboniste?

    Merci

    Gracias

    Thanks

  • @saltinvanki Bill Harris.

  • badass!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ella, with the exception of Louis, the single greatest jazz musician of all time.

Who knew that Phillips, as a young man, looked so much like Kevin Spacey?

Prez and Porkpie, without whom Bird (part 1, great to see this) would not exist.

With the exception of Buzzy Drootin, never have I ever seen a musician have so much fun playing, so much sheer joy, as Buddy Rich.

(written after seeing parts 1 and 2 in order)

  • @tuxguys in reference to having fum as Buddy Rich definitely did, check out Wes Montgomery. He had a lot of fun playing...................just another one that smiled and was full of joy all the time while playing.

  • @kenjames64

    Who's that ? Not born yet ;

  • Check out the obvious continuity blooper. At 5:30, just at the band starts playing with Flip Phillips and Harry Edison, Lester Young is wearing a dark suit with a light shirt. In the next shot, at 5:35, he's wearing a light suit with a dark shirt. This combo switches back and forth. This clip must have been shot over 2 days.

  • Tutti grandissimi. Fantastico !!!!! Lester in primis !!!!

  • Oh the B&W 1950s... Lester Young is THE Sax god

  • These guys are So Great Together.

  • That phrase at the end by that guy who isn't Prez is beautiful!

  • Lester is so smooth!!

  • Lester Young is MY president!

  • Please get over the vid/sound synk "listen" to the music of Gods.

  • Buddy Rich surely wasn't a smooth brush player. It's like asking a coke-head to meditate.

  • I heard recently that Lester Young's movements were elegant and that he seemed to glide when he walked. The reason for this was said to be because he suffered with gout which would certainly account for his comfortable looking footwear.

  • @kenjames64 Thanks Ken, all is revealed. BTW, y're not by any chance the Ken James that used to play with The Last Straw?

  • i watch this video every day for the past 2 months and never get tired of it. understanding all the emotions and patterns is epic!

  • i see charlie parker was kicked to the curb.watch part 1 and see why

  • @BlueBurryPimp

is it because he interrupted Coleman Hawkin's solo?

  • @JUSfr34k I would assume so

  • anyone that claims that buddy is loud boring and obnoxious drummer should check out these vids.

  • Dexter Gordon was checking Prez for sure .

  • Quanta bella gente in questo clip...WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow man, thanks a lot for posting. Made my morning.

  • man,Hank Jone's piano intro is ALWAYS great,so soothing

  • As for sound out of sync, it must have been recorded with a different setup -- in the first tune, Rich is playing a ride cymbal all the way through, but there's only a hi-hat on stage

  • @sirgrubble that is the high hat you are hearing (No ride cymbal)

they use to ride on the hi hat all drummers did that back then

  • @sirgrubble no microphones..

  • Thank you for posting this wonderful clip. What a treasure ! It's beautiful to see all these legendary musicians, and maybe best of all to see how they're all enjoying themselves

  • killer!!! thanks a lot for posting......

  • if you watch part one it tells all as far as bird and the labeling is concerned

  • nice music

  • sang ella!

  • Hank Jones is now immortalize. Thank you Hank.

  • @TheFlutevisions - Saw him in Charleston, Spoleto Festival .. a coupla years ago. He, Thad and Elvin were some of the BEST of jazz brothers/musicians. Hank's security, style, inventiveness and grace WILL be missed. Great guy!

  • Exquisite. Thanks, kenjames.

  • amazing

  • digging flip's solo. nothing wrong with some yakety r&b on a blowing sesh. yeah!

  • lester young is God!

  • @franco212 Almost.

  • Impresionante !!! que época todo era más natural

  • Great to see Prez playing so well. I really love the way Sweets comes in. He really makes his presence known from the start. Bill Harris did great and so did everyone. Excellent clip!

  • @beeshor1 Great to see jazz fans listening.

  • @kenjames64 - Edison's solo starts out, pretty well .. but then goes into cliches .. IMO. Harris is pretty fine, but it's always Lester Young .. who outshines everyone, with originality and endurability. It's NO wonder that Quinichette and others, tried to copy the Lester Young way.

  • @jhb134 I so agree with you.

  • Great performance, tho the sound and picture are out of synch, and the video is mislabeled - no Bird, no Bean.

  • Not out of sync...this was originally filmed by the musicians playing over pre-recorded tracks. And Parker and Hawkins are in part 1. Lazy naming on my part.... Ken.

  • thanx - I was wondering if they were lip/finger synching or, whether the sound was not matching up.

  • @elgoogskcus Bird and Bean are in 1 - 2, this is 2 - 2.

  • buenísimo, increible

  • damn, flip phillips really likes edision

  • So good! So many of the greats in one recording!

    Love Lester young!

    Such a good set list.

  • Oh Ray Brown........what a lovely tone he had. That solo he did just as Prez walked onto the bandstand was lovely.

  • Lester Young Kills me. I love the man's playing.

  • This gets my groove flowin.......

Thank you very much for posting this rare video...!

  • if you've never thought about the bird flu before, think now

  • FLIP PHILLIPS!!!!!!!!!!

  • just wow....

  • PhilAroundhits -

Don't joke about Lester Young. Why should he listen to advice from John Wayne? A pork pie hat is just a thing, not music! I

  • The Fisrt Tune is Noel Coward's "I'll follow my secret Heart". Rarely ever done by Pres. Pres Love soft things. His shoes for instance. There is a story where he threw away a pair of expensive Italian leather shoes shortly after getting them from a friend. He Like things soft."SOFT eyes" as he used to say.

  • Ah those were the days!

  • mi fa impazzire come entra Buddy in Ad Lib ;-)

  • An unbelievably good pianist - Hank Jones. Perhaps only Al Haig equalled him in those days.

  • You guys talkin' 'bout Pres' "pork pie hat"?

  • Et les batteurs cassaient pas les oreilles des pauvres musiciens. Prez a pas écouté les conseils de John Wayne : learn to use a gun and get rid of that hat.

    Ella, comme d'hab géniale.

  • It's not a cowboy hat.

  • Mississipi's hat neither

  • Nor New Orleans.

  • putain ça fasait pas semblant à l'époque... BAM !

  • Good stuff, thanks for posting!
