i do not think that she is really doing it - just showing how it is done. The child´s skin is unmarked and sometimes it is clear that there is no contact between the stone and the chest. The statistics may not be correct but that does not disprove the existence of the act which has far reaching consequences in the life and future of the girl child. I know of a neighbor who did this to her girl child for fear that men be attracted to her. This is a cultural practice in some places in Cameroon and other African Countries but it is not long that people started speaking against it. The era of speaking against what was supposedly a taboo is gone. Our generation must speak out!

This is usually done to teenage girls with already develping breasts not to children, unless they are early developers. It is done to prevent sexual assault and so tht the girls can get an education rather than be forced into early/child marriage.
THIS IS A DESPERATE ACT OF DESPERTE MOTHERS WHO KNOW OF NO OTHER WAY TO PROTECT THEIR DAUGHTERS. These women and their children need help. They need education and a refuge to show them other ways of helping their daughters escape such horrible fates.

i do not think that she is really doing it - just showing how it is done. The child´s skin is unmarked and sometimes it is clear that there is no contact between the stone and the chest. Also the mother sits holding the stone in her hand. If you see the results (in other photographs) the stone would be far too hot to hold in that manner. Not to diminish the message!!

I study different cultures, so I know there are often a lot of factors going on. So, I pose these as questions. Even as a Christian who believes in eternal right and wrong, I do believe that a discussion should encouraged in Cameroon rather than vilification.
Lastly, I encourage those Cameroonians who are engaged in fighting against this. I pray that you will stand tall in bringing about change that will uplift the situation, in your country, of women (and men because men are also affected).

Isn't this placing blame on women and their bodies? What if men had such a procedure done on their penises? Would there be an outrcry then? If I was a father in such a country, I would want my daughters to grow up feeling confident in who they were and protected from the many dangers out there. The statistics may not be correct but that does not disprove the existence of the act which has far reaching consequences in the life and future of the girl child. I know of a neighbor who did this to her girl child for fear that men be attracted to her. This is a cultural practice in some places in Cameroon and other African Countries but it is not long that people started speaking against it. The era of speaking against what was supposedly a taboo is gone. Our generation must speak out!

This is not just a "different culture". It is not OK for the children ANYWHERE. Punish the men who rape children. This is usually done to teenage girls with already develping breasts not to children, unless they are early developers. It is done to prevent sexual assault and so tht the girls can get an education rather than be forced into early/child marriage.
THIS IS A DESPERATE ACT OF DESPERTE MOTHERS WHO KNOW OF NO OTHER WAY TO PROTECT THEIR DAUGHTERS. These women and their children need help. They need education and a refuge to show them other ways of helping their daughters escape such horrible fates.

This is an awful practice that should certainly be addressed and stopped. Education is the only way to prevent such terrible practices. Many women all over the world have no clue about how & when pregnancy occurs. There are many ways of preventing girls from getting pregnant without mutilating them. This practice has to have an even greater effect on infant mortality. I would love to know what these women are expected to do when they are ready for children that need breastmilk to survive
