depend on the level and age of the trainee. for the university level or older, unless you take care of your shinai by oiling it plenty of times, it will soon splintered. i know because i wasn't too happy to have my prized shinai splintered after less than 6 months of usage.
there are other pre-treatment such as carbon shinai and smoked. carbon shinai is the toughest one but also give u tennis elbow. i am trying out the smoked one at the moment.
The bamboo is very flexible, it consists of 4 straws that can move inwards. And in kendo you're not supposed to hit very hard, your right hand holds the blow and you bounce back up after the hit. So the shinai lasts a long time.

Is Shinai so endure that it will survive really stronge and many attacks ? That's interesting (I study Aikiken with bokuto (or bokken) ).
