Markus Baur is such a wonderful talent in this piece. WHERE IS HE NOW ???..
I consider this the best performance I have seen of this piece of music, and I have performed it as part of the chorus. I look back and wish I could have had the opportunity to sing such music when I was his age, as I had the voice to do it then.
i could not hear the basses or tenors. Its not supposed to be in Pianissimo it should be in metzo piano. i bet even the crowd was going what are they saying. even i say they needed to be louder
I had the pleasure of conducting Markus Baur in August 1989 and knew him to be a first class talent. He is the son of simple Bavarian farmers (just like the family name). For me, personally, this performance was and will always be the best ever. If this video continued to the applause, you would have seen Bernstein smother the boy with kisses, which was Lenny's way - always over the top! And that also explains why the hand on the shoulder - a moment of extraordinary thanks to the young artist.
Simply outstanding. Soloist just gives his all - you can see how much he is putting in from his facial expression and from his breathing. Bernstein was clearly moved - that's all the hand on the shoulder was. Looking at the kids in the chorus - I wonder if they realised how lucky they were to work with such a genius ?
Boy soloist A+, Boys choir B, Composition (Adonai ro-i) C, Men Choir D, Fucking diva Bernstein taping on the boy's shoulder 0- F. Thank you for reading, but you did not have to do it, this is just my opinion.
At 1:44 Bernstein is cutting him off; the kid is holding his note way too long. I hate leaving negative comments but I have to say: guys, this is not a good performance by the soloist. He's belting and toying with his voice. His intonation is sketchy (that first D is very painful). Listen to the Marin Alsop / Bournemouth recording. I'm sorry I don't know the name of the treble soloist on that recording, but he's sublime.
@EndeavourMorse No, he is not cutting him off. 1. He would never have done that in that way. 2. He is responding to the singer's poise, beautiful singing and his smile at him near the end of the first section. 3. Check the score on the length of the note, and consider that the composer may have encouraged the boy to extend the note. We do not know this.
@MGDANCEMG Well said. We would know if we looked at the score and compared the length of Mr Baur's note to the note value that Maestro Bernstein wrote. :-)
The man on the right at 3:51 to 3:54 is totally lost as evidenced by his non movement of the lips. How can this happen in a high quality choir like this that has Maestro Bernstein as its conductor?
@unicomeeoh I have always liked this piece. And I never found a voice (imperfect as it might be in the live performance) so well tuned to this part. I agree wholeheartedly.
I cried watching this. The shoulder pat by Bernstein...... What a true maestro. Music should not be about perfection. Music is about moving people. This performance rocked me deep into my soul that I am still crying as I write this comment. Bravi!!!!!
I cannot believe some people think that the shoulder touch was "to stop him", as if this is a jazz gig! People, what you hear is what's written in the score. I remember every second of it, and of course there's no "cut-off" or "sudden decision". It's obvious the boy has stage fright and he is very insecure at first, especially around 0.13 where he really sounds bad. Then he gets much better, especially after the eye contact with Bernstein. The touch was a way of affirming that all is well
Stage fright happens all the time. And this is a pro example of getting through it. The soloist is incredibly talented. Otherwise why would he have been up there singing next to the composer. At 1:35 he makes eye contact with Bernstein and quick looks seem to make him almost smile and then relax. The maestro knew to wait for the first natural break in the solo before putting his hand on his shoulder for encouragement. But hear his confidence after that. Bravo to both of them!
So cute! This song has a wonderful melody that touches the soul! And I had a little scare in the part where the chorus of men enter... But I think this is the intent of the music, right? kkkkkkkkkkkk xD
Vou fazer o solo dela no meu coral... Espero que fique lindo assim :}

This video is amazing .. I always feel a thrill when Bernstein lays a hand on the child's shoulder to stop him. He does it gently, with love. Thanks Lenny for this immortal music.
See my comment below - this is a continuation. Bernstein only gently touch Markus' shoulder to remind him to stand still, as he was swaying noticeably with the music. I didn't find it distracting, but Bernstein obviously did. Markus was composed and confident enough to continue with his splendid performance to the end. The best I could find was to just download this youtube vid to my computer memory. I still have it, and can play it anytime. Regards, Dave Phelps.
Markus Baur sung as a boy soloist on several recordings, for example in Gustav Mahler's "Das klagende Lied" (dir. Ricardo Chailly), but I especially recommend Heinrich Schütz "Kleine geistliche Konzerte" (dir. Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden).
I don't know how familiar you are with the Chichester Psalms, but I have sung it in a chorus in performance. Bernstein wrote this part especially to be performed by a boy or a contratenor. I preferred Markus' performance over the contratenors that are featured on youtube doing this same music.
@toknfan Don't think it's affirmation this time. He's defo making the kid stop. The boy is surprised, too. Maybe a sudden change in conducting decision?
@okorszem Maybe afirmation is not the more exact word. What we see here is a musical and religious moment and children are the best catchers of that point where freedom meets destiny. Here, Benstein is surely in a high place and a normal conducter gesture is not enough, he NEEDS to touch the boy saying thank you.
@edcassells I believe you are right. After all, it's a kid who is not quite seasoned but is singing his heart out. And well, Berstein is the conductor and composer, so I think he has some right to the results of the performance! Besides, the kid really seems to admire him. I think it was a camera man's fault, not the fault of the conductor or performer. :)
@pila406 Because the soloists note was going to clash with the alto and soprano lines. I Performed this last semester and in rehearsal we discovered this.
As you, I searched the internet, and found only Mark Bauer as a soccer player or rugby, I'm not sure which. The boy was fantastic in this vid. I love the movement (23rd psalm) and its solo. One thing to keep in mind is that Bernstein passed away in October, 1990. This performance was probably well before that - say 1980 latest - so Markus Bauer would be 34 years old at this point. No telling what he looks like - or what ever happened to his singing.
It´s exactly 20 years since the great 50-year-manifestation in Warszawa of the outbreak of World war II was held - and thus also since this record with the fantastic 14-year-old Tölzer Knabe in the great concert then.
The obvious questions are of course why there aren´t more recordings with this Markus Baur - and does anyone know anything about him as grown-up?
And to "toknfan" How did you get hold of this remarkable piece?
my initial reaction was to NOT like this, for reasons better left unsaid.
however, i gave it time, let it work with me, as i know this piece myself, and sang this many times in my youth (damn puberty, dammit!)
Later, as i was older, i played the accompaniment to this on the pipe organ (as, that is, my groove and forte)
Many criticisms have been levelled at Lenny, but honestly, to write this music, you have to have heart, a good soul, and the utmost creativity and imagination...fantastic!
This is really one of the most beautiful songs Bernstein ever wrote. I'd say this and "Somewhere." Do you see that little boy singing his heart out?! You'd think he as just about to float up to the clouds. Oh, it's just so moving!
I agree... I don't know if I've ever seen a young child sing with everything in him. I watched this and cried! This is probably one of my favorite videos of this piece! It's gorgeous!!!!
This is right, the innocence of a child with Lenny. Its not a perfect voice, but life is not supposed to be perfect, or is it? If the prayer is meant to bring salvation to those on earth, then it must be an earthly voice, despite being like a cherub. I find it interesting that others prefer the prefection of a countertenor, but Lenny himself chose a child. The representation of a young David is wonderful.
The soloist is terrific and so are all of the choristers, but it's Bernstein who's going to break your heart in this video. I've never seen him conduct himself more adorably, and Bernstein's a guy whose spirit shone radiantly without him having to so much as lift a finger. Thank you so much for this video!
I have worked with professional singers in various capacities for 25 years. This young soloist moves me more than most I can remember. He gives his absolute all to this music and his singing. Ah to have his courage as an artist, his abandon combined with control. Congrats to teacher and soloist, and the composer-conductor by the way...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think the soloist is trying to 'belt'. He should have kept the sound high and angelic, up in head voice. I almost hit the floor at1:55 and 2:11 when we had the video of the choristers - like a propoganda film for the Aryan youth movement!
the child's voice was never meant to be "angelic" berstein explicitly chooses a young boy to sing this part because thats the only voice that can produce the purity of tone he was looking for to represent the boy david himself
I kindly disagree. The hell you refer to ended more than 40 years ago. They are just German children, no need recreate the tension. The fact that Leonard Berstein himself is conducting, a beautiful extract from the Torah in Hebrew, his tender visual contact with the soloist, it's pure redemption.
ummm whether or not you agree with this guy. you're an idiot. head voice is a very important musical term, and is something people strive to achieve and perfect. it's not bullshit. whether i think this guy is good or not,at least i have a basic understanding of music and technique. sorry, but you're mistaken and uneducated.
I am compelled to agree with Kelc on this one. Head voice is a term for the upper range of a voice. While it is usually used to refer to an upper female range (male is usually called falsetto) it can be used to refer to a male voice as well. And yes, Mark has an amazing head voice, despite the fact that he's like 14 or 15 in this recording.
Incase you don't know, head voice is a VERY common term known to vocalists. I'm one and I can walk up to every vocal major at my school, say the phrase, 'head voice' and they'd know exactly what I'm saying.
I think also because the soloist seemed to be turning away from the microphone. So, a hand on the shoulder not only to affirm, but to re-position.

And to "toknfan" How did you get hold of this remarkable piece?

Hey. Did you find anything about Markus Baur? Did you find out how to get this recording?

my initial reaction was to NOT like this, for reasons better left unsaid.
however, i gave it time, let it work with me, as i know this piece myself, and sang this many times in my youth (damn puberty, dammit!)

I love how in the music when comparing the sopranos/altos to tenor/bass from 4:05 on it says "blissfully unaware of the threat"
shutyoudown 3 years ago
Yeah, that bit gets me eh! Better than writing something in Italian, like Dolce.
We sang it last week in Wellington, New Zealand. With the Harp, Percussion and Organ.
truthfulmusic 2 years ago
Very nice, we got to practice with a harp organ and percussion, but the actual performance was a full orchestra.
such a beautiful piece-)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I think the soloist is trying to 'belt'. He should have kept the sound high and angelic, up in head voice. I almost hit the floor at1:55 and 2:11 when we had the video of the choristers - like a propoganda film for the Aryan youth movement!
sutherland9 3 years ago
the child's voice was never meant to be "angelic" berstein explicitly chooses a young boy to sing this part because thats the only voice that can produce the purity of tone he was looking for to represent the boy david himself
elmothejew 3 years ago 4

199022008 2 years ago 3
Incase you don't know, head voice is a VERY common term known to vocalists. I'm one and I can walk up to every vocal major at my school, say the phrase, 'head voice' and they'd know exactly what I'm saying.

When I Google this boys name, I found just sites of a german handball player, is it the same guy?
Zerlina12 3 years ago
No, can´t be. The handball star player was born in 1971 - this Markus Baur most likely earliest 1975.
