  • I rented a video from Netflix and was overwhelmed by the beauty of Rautavaara's music. The way he depicted the Russian Czar and his family and Rasputin made history come alive in a most extraordinary fashion. When Rasputin is lulling the Czar's son to sleep I truly became entranced and hypnotized myself. Rautavaara also understand drama and I was on the "edge of my seat" throughout!

  • @4444marla Thank you very much, that sure was the fastest UT answer ever :-)

  • Yes, I too, and I believe Opera is one of Rautavaara's best idioms after seeing the extraordinary"Rasputin". I want MORE!

  • @4444marla So did you see a staged production or DVD of Rasputin?

  • Thanks for your comment. (I am not an authority on the subject, but:) Recording an opera is, obviously, very expensive, and even more so making a DVD. They are usally based on existing staged productions. I don't think either of the works mentioned were filmed at the time they were performed.

To my knowledge only The Gift of Magi (for television) and Rasputin are the only ones available. (But you know all this...)

  • I want to know why Rautavaara's work isn't recorded on DVD. I'd love to see a staged version of Thomas or Myth of Sampo
