  • I hope she got paid for this shit

  • ....A lovely new voice for me...But...I am just in awe at the...''production'' o.O...what the heck happened!? o.O lol. Poor Verdi is rolling in his grave.

  • Well, I guess now she's queen bee. Seriously, though, why would Valayre agree to go through with this? Was it in her contract? Humiliation by association even if she's not in the bee drag. We should just junk the entire operatic repertoire if this is the direction some directors wish to take it in--a cartoon parody that's probably only funny to school boys. Cheap thrills and easy jitters in their attempt to debase 19th century sentimental romanticism and mask their interpretive poverty.

  • @dimitrovajunkie What to see another masterpiece of "regie"? Check out new Ruslan and Ludmila at Bolshoi. Just type "Ruslan & Ludmila @ Bolshoi"; you can then also check out some videos with Russian title. It's even worse that this one. At least this performance is not X-rated.

  • Neuenfels should be euthanized for the good of music...

  • @cheradinine8 Nah, he'd just become a martyr and other directors woul;d put on memorial productions of his garbage...like this one. There's been enough "buzz" about Neuenfels already.

  • @cheradinine8 Add to it Callixto Beito and several other directors. I only hope this Age of the Director ends in my time.

  • when I see a masterpiece mistreated like that I would love to chick the ass of this jackass of Neuenfels... and in this case I'm so pissed off with those who gave him the power to rape this opera. as Italian we should not allowed this donkeys to abuse of our heritage and culture... hey Neuenfels I wish you all the worst in the world...RIP (I hope soon)...

  • the only good news is that once this jackass will pass away (soon I hope) no-one will remember him or his crap...but everyone will still remember the genius of VERDI and his Operas... VIVA VERDI...

  • @ccim76 Unfortunately, there are so many other bad directors out there. What should happen is that someone in the theaters management should wake up and realize that it's the composer who is the most important in opera, then the author of the libretto and the musicians who perform it. Then critics should understand it too. The director should be put back in his place. There is a good article called "The Abduction of opera" by Heather Mac Donald that talks about it - it's on the internet.

  • So what bug where the Hebrew slaves in this production? Only in a Germany or Switzerland, lol. Povera Abigaille.

  • I feel sorry for the cast having to perform in this. Whenever I see productions like this, I suspect it was staged by someone who doesn't really like opera and doesn't trust the music.

  • I have been there, and ran out of the Berlin Opera before the end of the first act.

It took me a year to get rid of the poison that Hans Neuenfels put into my body by raping this beautiful Verdi Opera.

This year I have been to Verona and have seen the best performance in years. In Italy they fully understand how to work with this delicate masterpiece.

So If you like to see an Opera in it glory (as it was meant to be) avoid Berlin go straightaway to Verona!

  • Why do these directors insist upon making mockery of opera with these downright stupid productions? Who's supposed to take the story seriously with all of these crazy visuals? Here is the undoing of opera.

  • miel pop's bsss bsss...

  • There are no words to express how idiotic this concept is.

  • @catface1965 WORD.

  • @catface1965

can u express with words that someone was actually paid for this concept? I mean how much he or she must have hated the Opera to stage smth so atrocious

  • It because Germans don't know how to deal with emotions in regular life, i live there i know...

Because of that it's full of different kind of fatish stuff, and the same in theaters...

  • I think productions of this type should be reserved for modern operas so that the composers can serve as consultant to the production team. Poor Verdi cannot defend his opera against maniacal directors who wish to distort his creation. Where is the respect for the composer's intentions?

  • @TheOperadaddy2 You are so right. These days when I hear words "new production" at the Met, I get scared. These directors ruin the whole experience. I see the list of performers for these new productions and I want to buy a ticket, but I don't want to spend money and then have to sit with my eyes closed. This particular production is just crazy, it goes beyond updating, it's pure example of Eurotrash. Unless the idea was to make it appealing to 4-year olds.

  • I could cry when I see what insane directors can do to our beloved Verdi, This type of production is an absolute insult to the composer and librettist. I woukld prefer to see opera disappera than turn into this type of garbage. What makes it worse is that there are some who will defend this as high art. They think the rest of us are fools for objecting.

  • WHAT THE PHUQUE is going on here??? This HAS to be Carol Burnett doing a "sketch".

  • Poor singer what a Scheisse production!!!

  • Close your eyes and just listen. It is qute good!

  • Sembra una comedia! No e mala idea.

Looks like a comedy not bad idea.

  • The dancing bumble bees are actually pretty stupid, but by now, we all know what Hans Neunfels productions are like. What bothers me is that they're not even good; they're almost never together, and most of them move like spastics. At least he could have chosen the men from the chorus who can actually dance.

  • Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOl...I never thought that someone can make a comedy from Nabucco...I have to recognize that I had to listen it twice, because first I started laughing...it's really hard to pay attention to her singing, quiet good, when u see those giant bees:)))))

  • Oh, my god!!

  • Shame to Mr.Neuenfels: A PERFECT IDIOT!

  • Seriously, they remade an Opera set in Hebrew times with Bees? They just stung the reputation of Verdi! But vocally, Valayre was good.

  • @fourmi1060 You are so wise! I wish I were like you!:-)

  • @fourmi1060 I have to listen to it again as I was so absorbed in laughing that I just didn't notice any singing which happens to me extremely seldom! LOL But I believe your finest taste: if you say that the singing is nice it usually is!:-) I just wonder how Valayre managed actually to sing looking at all this?! LOL Showbusiness is already like a virus destroying everything! Where are we going? Philippe Jaroussky sings baroque like pop music. Verdi is presented like a cheap second-rate operetta

E' cosi' abbiamo speranza!...

  • Nabucco chez Offenbach ?...

  • @arpeggio1358--Vous avez raison!!!! What would Papa Verdi say--or do with an axe!!! LOL. Maybe we need a bit of humor in our too serious world--pollution, nuclear profliferation, terrorism, injustice, bigotry, commercialism, disrespect, etc.

  • I have not laughed so hard in a long time.. Sylvie is fab.... and I cannot see how she did not break up laughing every night.. Those costumes.. and they way they wiggled their butts in time to the music! I laughed so hard I peed my pants....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Non c'è limite alla deficienza mentale

  • The singing is excellent which is the bottom line I liked the embellishments but did some idiot get paid to design this garbage. Butterflies would have been better. At least I can close my eyes.

  • @65attila I'm afraid that someone did get paid to design this garbage. It's no wonder that opera companies have trouble getting people into the theater to watch live opera. It does, however, make me laugh.,,especially when the bees wiggle their great big bee butts at the audience. And how about the stingers at the end of the clip?

  • @arpeggio1358 OMG! Such ingenuity! LOL Poor Verdi! I guess we can either laugh or use swearwords describing this production! I prefer to laugh! LOL

  • @serenaluce I prefer to laugh, too!

  • @arpeggio1358 I wonder who are these 43 people who liked this video? I envy them as they must have noticed the singing! LOL I can't! I tried to listen with my eyes closed but still laughed! I guess I'll remember this "BEEautiful" picture for the rest of my life! LOL I love YT so much as it's all for free. I wouldn't feel this way if I wasted my money. LOL Thanks for sharing this "masterpiece":-)

  • @serenaluce Maybe the 43 people who liked this video are peopel who haven't seen any opera before and think bees are a common occurrence on opera stages.

    :-)

  • @arpeggio1358 It's the only reasonable explanation! LOL

  • @serenaluce Makes as much sense as anything!

  • @bassfanne45 pfft I'm 21 and I think I'm too old to understand this. I mean why? WHY? Why the bees? Why the indignity? At least the singing is decent. Sylvie Valayre is the only re

  • @CrystalFlames *redeeming part of this performance.

  • Why is this happening. Why.

  • @CrystalFlames If you could tell me, then we'd both know.

  • aztakurva! (boccs)

  • Pity the audience did not storm the stage and stop this travesty from continuing! I heard about this production but didn't realize how stupid it is. Plus, the men in the chorus don't even bother to stay in step with each other. Maybe they were laughing too hard. I can't believe state money went for this.

  • @ploplisphilin I think the chorus members can't dance in step with each other because professional dancers and professional chorus people refused to appear in this travesty. My guess is they hired people off the street to appear in the bee costumes.

  • @bassfanne45 I am afraid I am too old to understand. The director wants opera to be enjoyed by 5-year olds of all ages in hope that it'll encourage new generation of opera-goers. Kindergarten trip to opera. It doesn't really have to make sense, it only needs to be entertaining.

  • I am afraid the message of this production is too complicated for my feeble mind. I thought that some of Met new productions were borderline eurotrash, but I see now that I was unfair to Gelb. Now I see what real eurotrash looks like.

  • I am just wondering... what does this production add to our understanding of the opera?

What does this tell us for the director? He was void of ideas and played the "The Emperor's New Clothes" trick... ="Whoever does not understand me is utterly stupid!" But we are children and we see that the emperor IS naked...

Tough luck for the audience... he works for a government funded theatre... He should work for privately run Companies... let us see if he can pull this number there...

  • Neuenfels made headlines with his production of Idomeneo in Berlin; the production shocked the audience and was much discussed.

So a man that doesn't have the talent or imagination to become a great director becomes one by making headlines. It is sad for the art form which has so much difficulty attracting a decent plublic.

  • Why on earth such a horror?

    Poor Verdi...

  • What the fuck?!

Why are they doing this to Nabucco?!

  • Nabeeco.

  • @zehtesko Brilliant comment! Bravo! LOL

  • @zehtesko I would like to see the 4 or 5 bees in the audience applauding this.

  • @yglofmi This is the funniest comment I've ever seen on YT.

  • Charming dance. Valayre's aways into messed productions, lol

  • BTW you re absolutely right, why does she agree to take part in this parody, she is a top-class singer!

  • @boris1281 because she is sure of herself, her talent and she is not rigid in her performance. Plus, probably she was well paid :)

  • I attended the opening night of this production at the Deutsche Oper some years ago. The booing after the bee cabaletta lasted for a good three minutes, and Neuenfels was roundly booed during his solo bow at the end. Further outrage: the Hebrew chorus was costumed as Khassidic Jews, and the men and women were directed to kneel and hold hands, both of which are absolutely forbidden for Khassids. I'm astonished to see that this production is still in the repertory. Incredible!

  • Wish I could be in this choir! lol

  • This cabaletta 's became a "cabaretta". Disgusting!!

  • I agree. Opera is not a circus. Opera must be something traditional and not a "dancing bees show".

  • Yes it is HORRIBLE and discusting ! How can an artist so wonderfull as Miss valayre accept this kind of "scenografy" it is just to boo !

What a shame with such a beautiful voice (with all the abellishments and coloraturas ) just a drama !!!BOOOOOOOO Neuenfels ! Opera is not a Cirkus !

  • I feel sorry for poor Valayre. She has to sing one of the most difficult cabalettas ever written and she must look at a bunch of dancing bees. The director should be locked up in an asylum. Valayre is still quite good.

  • TOTALLY AGREED, that situation makes me laugh my lungs out!! HAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • @thetuscanman Alas, I heard Valayre live in 2010. Her voice has deteriorated horribly.

  • Hans Neuenfels simply hates Italian Opera and thinks Nabucco is very poor of qualities, both musically and dramaturgicaly. Therefore he try to do his best to make Verdi better, to add interesting elements! The truth is that Verdi will leave forever while Mr Neuenfels will be forgot very soon. The arrogance of the german directors is unbelievable but also the patience of the German public is unbelievable. In all this Sylvie Valayre is not bad at all. Enjoy ...

  • Why are the Assyrians dressed up like a bunch of yellow jackets doing the fox trot????????? Pardon the stinging criticism honey, but this director needs to buzz off. I'm performing Nabucco in Detroit this fall and have looked forward to performing this work for a very long time, but I can assure you if they put us in BEE costumes I will be quitting immediately. This has to be a new LOW in stage production history.

  • Dios mio!!!!

  • Scandaloso.Oh my God!!!!Shame

  • Excellent singing, but why do these stupid stage directors not the sack, it is absolutely ridiculous and it takes so much away from the singing. Professional singing of the highest standard and a production and a deranged untalented creature who really should be workin in the theatre

  • dio mio!!

  • And she is not even a Queen Bee, because she wears bear skin, so she could be called Queen Bear with her Bee Army! And she seems to stretch her hand towards that guy who is supposed to be the High Priest of Baal in a somewhat awkward manner! I have seen modern productions, but I have never seen anything remotely resembling this STUPIDITY!

  • I can't agree with you more! Those costumes may fit into a comedy for little children from kindergarten, but this is supposed to be a serious drama! If they want to exhibit their so-called 'creativity', they should have written A NEW LIBRETTO and composed A NEW OPERA that would be EQUALLY RIDICULOUS! I AM SO FURIOUS!

  • This is indeed RIDICULOUS! Abigaille's dress looks like Amina from LA SONNAMBULA (I mean Callas' Amina in Visconti's production), not to mention those bees and that she seems to be dressed in bear skin or something like that! It's so BLOODY AWFUL and DISGUSTING that I can't concentrate on her singing, although she sings this marvellously.

  • Nabucco or Nabeeeeeeeeecco....

  • I cannot stop laughing :)))))))) I adore this opera and this staging is indeed so absurd its funny :)))

  • Israelites.... Babylonians.... BEES!

    - OH...MY!..

I actually want to see the whole thing to see how the heck this makes sense....

I want to favorite this because I can't stop laughing... EVERYONE I know in the opera world has a link to this waiting for them on Facebook.... especially since they all know this is my favorite opera.

  • WTH?! Was led to this from a KUHF article - had to see it to believe it. Dancing BEES? Could this staging be worse!? What is opera coming to?

Singing is pretty darn impressive though.

  • spray this production with Raid™

  • Good singing, boring production.

  • You think they just found bee costumes and went "What the heck, let's use 'em!"? Also, I'll bet each of the bees were thinking "I'd studied and practiced singing for THIS?!"

  • What crack was the director smoking when they went and thought this up? And you no opera chorister in their right mind would be willing to actually do that

  • This is shite. The director should be dragged out into the street and shot. First rate singing from Madame Valayre though.

  • LOL, if you're going to have dancing bees shaking their booties on stage, it would be behoove one to atempt this in a country where people have a modicum of rhythm. HILARIOUS

  • Preposterous staging - are some opera directors so bankrupt that they can't even see the stupidity of their "concept"?

  • Oh Dear.....I am not one of these singers that writes bad things about other singers....Only eople that are ON stage knows what difficulties we have to face, but GOD.....what is this production? BEES? 0.0

  • HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

i love her voice, but the bees are ridiculous

  • Great Performance!!! Hans Neuenfels it's a genius!!!!

  • Yes, a genius, but at what?

  • The bee costumes and the dance are really distracting and silly, though I suppose they are just as good in this opera as they would be in any other. This is why I love concert performances of operas. Otherwise, Valayre is really terrific, even singing all of the trills.

  • Very well sung, and interesting reprise. But no, this bee ass dance is ugly. It's a very dramatic moment here, poor singer and public.

I have nothing against bee, but if the stage director want to create a show with human bee, ok why not, but why use Verdi's Nabucco as a pretext ? Just do you're bloody bee show far from an opera house, or write the story of bee queen on an original music and libretto !

  • The flight of the bumble bee!!! (This is Nabucco???) The queen bee is very powerfull and virtuous. Brava

  • Yeah !

Salve!

  • @yglofmi

I certainly agree that the production here is pretty lame. But I still prefer such an "off-topic" production to old and classic ones.

I am not sure if Neunfels despises opera. Maybe this is meaningful for him.

  • @Klaposmirmu Old and classic productions MAKE SENSE. The words make sense, the emotions make sense, the stories makes sense in the time/place where they are originally set. They live interpretation to the viewer instead of shoving somebody's "concept" down everybody's throat. Old and classic could be made interesting by concentrating on emotions and singers' movement and acting. Moving the story is an easy cop out for the director to justify his pay.

  • Sylvie Valayre is amazing and I love Nabucco. This clip shows how you can take 2 good ingredients and make something excruciatingly bad by trying to be 'clever'. Or was this just a dreadful mix up in the costume department? ("You idiot! Our 'Bugs Life' musical is NEXT week!")

  • Esto es una mierda!!!, deficientes mentales

  • This kind of "production" is just DISCUSTING and I cannot understand how "singers" can accept it....Can you imagine Caballé , Pavarotti or Sutherland singing in such horribles !!! It is just "the fantasmagory of some Opera Directors who are ready to accept everything just "to be modern" , sorry but Nabucco is NOT a modern story...Far from that ! ! POOR SINGERS,POOR VERDI , POOR " PUBLIC " IT IS AN HORROR !!! BOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

  • I agree with you completely here. For some reason, though, I find myself laughing at:

    a) Just how bad the male chorus is.

    b) The stupidity of the bee's little 'Cabaletta' dance.

What can I say? Crap productions like this make me laugh my ass off.

  • Yes of course , but what can we do ???? It is just a "real" pity with a Soprano like Valayre who is singing at her very best !!!!Who can imagine Pavarotti,Nilsson,Callas,Tebaldi,Caballé,Sutherland,Horne,Sills singing in such an Horrible production??They will have ALL cancelled ! But in that case the Director could have send the stage manager "out" ,when the Opera was "sold out" , a director won't have take the risk to loose all the money for a silly and discusting scenografy!

  • Poor, poor Verdi! He doesn't deserve something like this. That's profanation.

  • YES ! But what can "WE" do against those HORRORS ???? We can only do as I am doing (since years) I REFUSE TO GO AND SEE THOSE DREADFULL PRODUCTIONS !!!!!

  • Of course, this shit is from Germany-the land of opera massacre!

  • You are absolutely right, and this should be prohibited! It's totally ridiculous but why then does the conductor accept to work along with those all-mighty stage directors? Disgusting production, a true shame!

  • Great Valayre in a poor and ridiculous production ...

  • Why the singers don't refuse to sing in such horrible productions ??? It is AN INSULT to the MUSIC , to VERDI and to the SINGERS !!! Imagine what it could have been in "a normal" production ???? An incredible success !!!!! Do you really think that Pavarotti ,Caballé , Sutherland,Horne ,Corelli,Kraus would ever accepted to sing in such an Horror ! They all would have cancelled !!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ( not the singers, poor dears ) !

  • You're absolutely right! Many thanks! I'm so pissed off to see this, really! This is truly an insult to the music and lyric tradition.

  • OMG, the "dengue" fly is ridiculous!!!

  • God help us, more Eurotrash.

  • At least one can laugh loudly at this kind of ridiculous production... I don't know what is happening to the mind of these stage directors. Could it be a case of drug overdosis? ;-O

Unfortunately, the contrast is horrible: such a grand and beautiful art trated like kitsch trash.

  • What a Shame...

  • I can see it at the MET in 2010.... The Bee's to the rescue!

  • On a par with the PLANET OF THE APES RIGOLETTO.

  • BEE OPERA! too late for the old wonderful "Live, From New York, It's Saturday Night!" I note some lively elbow action on some drones!

Watching this can give a person a case of the hives, Hnark! Hnark!

  • Incredible. It's even funnier than the Met productions of Rusalka and Puritani. Unbelievable.

  • Why should Neunfels keep all the fun to himself? Let's try a moratorium on shit staging like this and force directors to honor intent of composers while conductors now add electric guitars, rap music, and change all adagios into prestos. Eurotrash directors know very well no one would come see their twisted "visions" outside the opera house. Hit producers in the pocketbook by declaring the emperor has no clothes and singers suck up some taste and integrity to just say no. Pity young audience!

  • The singing is fabulous, the production is trivial. What can you expect?

  • This is some of the worst costuming, staging and choreography I've ever seen. EVER.

Too bad the great singing was ruined by the awful bee suits and inaccurate and stupid choreography/staging.

    BAD BAD BAD.

  • i am truly repulsed. why do they do this to beauty?

  • Brava to Valayre and the other singers. A big raspberry to Neuenfels for this insulting trash. A truly creative director would be able to be innovative without resorting to ridiculing the art form, the singers, the composer, and the audience.

  • If this sort of production is what is supposedly keeping Opera "alive and valid" for the younger generation then I hope Opera gets taken off the life support it's already been lingering on for decades and is allowed to finally die in peace. Verdi and Solera are dead and cannot defend themselves from utter shit like this farcical, hideous,

insulting directorial "concept". What utter disgraceful rubbish.

  • How sad that the singers are not in a position to say "no" without putting their careers in jeopardy.

  • What is REALLY sad is the fact that Miss Valayre sings it so well, and will never be given the credit she deserves. This is one of the KILLER cabalettas in all of Verdi. It ruined the voice of his future wife, Giuseppina Strepponi.

  • Unfortunately singers are nowadays on the bottom of the heirachy and truly risk their careers when they do not comply with the stage director. It is so sad. Unless you have a name like Domingo or Gruberova, you have to put up with this crap or risk never getting hired again.

  • The Babylonians used to pour honey on sacred objects for luck- that might the connection the director saw between bumble bees and the opera. Anyways, it is probably more amusing than insulting....

  • hahahahahahahaha. The choreographed bee dancing - hahahahahaha. I'm sorry; this doesn't offend me like some productions. I just think it's HILARIOUS.

    Like, for real.

  • If they don't want to do Nabucco, just put on some play or a movie. A crime. Hang feces on the Mona lisa... Why, because YOU are bored with it??

  • I have often worked with opera directors, mostly German, who confessed in advance that they hated opera. This travesty is an example of what results. What utter garbage.

  • thank God! mel brooks is finally directing opera!

  • And here I thought it was Timothy Leary....
