i can see why she denied it, why would someone suffered from ED for years suddenly say the whole world, "Yeh! I have anorexia that's why I'm so damn skinny!" They were on TV, and i believe that no one would admit it in the public especially with a cheesy interviewer.
@DavidGLudwig If it was 1974, yeah, definitely, but not 1983; by then, it's too late. The night before Karen Carpenter died, she went to a restaurant, and ate like a normal person; no finicky mannerisms that night. However, because she spent so many years starving herself, her body wasn't used to the normal dinner she had that night, and her heart gave out. If she took care of the problem sooner, she would've lived, but she didn't seek help until it was too late. :(
It really bothers me to read posts that say "she wanted to die." She clearly loved living! This is a disease, a mental and physical illness, and back then NO ONE knew how to treat it. It was her death that brought attention to a disease that was affecting millions. In fact, of ALL the celebrity deaths (except, perhaps, of those who died from AIDS), Karen's was the one that really ended up HELPING people. Unfortunately for those of us who really loved her and her voice, it was devastating.
@JoshuaWander Why would she want to admit to it in public? She was getting help anyways, and when they actually tried to give her help it did not work and she died. All because you call it out doesn't mean it helps.
I had a friend who had this, she was adament to the questions. if she weighed 87 pounds but you stated 86, she would deny the whole conversation that she was not sick. she looked for reasons to say you are wrong and technically you would be. it is a diease that affects the body and brain.

Clinical Depression is a serious malady intrinsic to the individual. Anorexia is a behavioural choice. Taking dozens of laxatives a day with self induced vomiting is treatable by stopping the behaviour. Im not saying that it is easy to do, but she needed to hear the truth from the world.

@AQUAMARINETMI yeah same my brother was diagnose with anorexia 6 years ago then 2 years after with bulimia..its so scary..but im the same i an spot an anorexic a mile off =/

@aerialkate No apologies necessary. Its a dreadful illness--and is still going on---watch the pop shows. The pressure to stay thin on models, singers, actors--and regular citizens must be tremendous. You look in the mirror and feel fat even if you look like Twiggy. Luckily, there is help now and thousands have been saved from Karen's fate. She was the voice of an angel--now she IS an angel. Love you Miss K.
@Mrfroufrou09 I couldnt diagree with you more. Karen was in denial and it is written all over her face. I loved this womans voice and hate like hell she had to die. But if you know anything about addiction and compulsive actions you have to reach rock bottom to get get better.
If anything, the ones closest to her babied her WAY to much and they enabled her to continue her downward decline. She needed to be told she was killing herself EVERY DAY....... that was only way to save her.
@marcusdolby1 I've been there looking fame in th face-addicted in denial, alone.it took DEATH -quite literally- to wake me off of denial. In retrospect,I learned one thing:RELY ON YOU! cuz no one cares until youre dead
@michaelleacy Karen was giving her brother a hard time(when she rolled her eyes at him) because he laughed when she said"I have no idea what six stone in weight is". They were very close and I am almost positive it was just a brother and sister interacting in a loving way! Give her a break, Karen was also dealing with a very sensitive and private ordeal.
Well, Karen's half-right. Sue asks her if she weighed 84 lbs in 1975, but she weighed 89 lbs then. Sadly, during this interview in 1981, she probably weighed even less than that...
also when you say something too a women who s in this condention you look heavy or to skinny it has the wrong message sent too them and they do just the oppersite
this video is hurtful. She may have been in denial, which as anyone who has had a disease... may it be drugs, alcohol, etc would know that denial is the number 1 excuse for saying "yes I have a problem but can not come to terms with it." sad that we lost her. She was great and I wish she was still around touring to this day. I would have paid good money to be fortunate enough to here that wonderful voice.
@tokersrule Actually, confronting anorexics (which many did to Karen) sometimes makes it worse, since it's often about feeling others are controlling your life. In Karen's case, it seemed to work better when people offered a wink and a smile. One of her boyfriends, Mike, had an anorexic sister, and was able to get Karen to eat by telling her she looked great and insisted she eat when they were on dates- and she did. Sadly, they were both too busy with their careers to keep seeing each other...
You can see how close she and her brother were in this interview! It's him she looks at and rolls her eyes lovingly (when they share a laugh) and not the interviewer's comments, as some people stated. But yes she was in denial about her illness at this point. RIP Karen Carpenter.
Oh man...she was definitely in serious denial. You can tell because in the earlier performances she looked a lot healthier and she filled out her clothes better with a petite, but hour glass figure. This just makes me sad. She looks absolutely skeletal. I wish I could've been alive when the Carpenters were performing. My dad got me into them because he used to listen to them and he has reminisced about the day Karen passed away. Listening to her voice in certain songs, I can feel her pain.
"EYE" LOVE LEAN WOMAN. BUT BALANCE IS WHAT "EYE" AM REALLY SAYING. HOW CAN WOMEN HURT THE MEN WHO LOVE THEM SO MUCH BY STARVING THEMSELVES. WOMEN WHO DO THIS DO NOT FEEL THE TEARS IN THE MEN WHO LOVE THEM SO MUCH, AND THAT IS PAINFUL! AND YOU COULD SEE SHE DID NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT, AND THEN SHE DIES. GOD, HOW COULD SHE DO THIS TO THOSE WHO LOVE HER SO MUCH? IT KILLS ME TO THIS VERY DAY. SUCH GOD GIVEN BEAUTIFUL TALENT. THERE MUST BE OTHERS LIKE ME. 5
@GODrules555 society has conditioned women, particularly young women that being stick thin is beautiful. Give me the body of Kate Winslet any day. I find womanly curves far more attractive. Karen had the voice of an angel and it hurt me seeing Richard left on his own, never to hear their beautiful harmonies ever again except what was captured on record. A sad loss or a talented woman and beautiful woman
Wow. This is fascinating to see. I didn't realize she was in such denial about this publicly. I just assumed no one in the public ever confronted her directly. This makes her battle with anorexia even sadder.
Anorexia is very difficult to overcome. Karen was on the road to recovery, but the anorexia was just to strong for her. She wasn't "lying", Denial is a self defense mechanism. There is always a reason for someone being anorexic and usually it has nothing to do with weight. Karen was a very special lady and only she really knows what those reasons were. When you think of Karen, think of her beautiful smile and those beautiful brown eyes. Please give her the respect she deserves.
Definitely in denial. She looks so emaciated, and aged. Richard is right, those beautiful brown eyes look empty, and that gorgeous full black hair she had has gone......what a shame. She was so cute,
It's so sad how so obviously she was in complete and utter denial, almost being angry at the interviewer for telling her that she had a disorder. How could she possibly stop if she didn't think there was anything wrong? She didn't have to be anorexic. She was a total cutie the way she was. I guess someone in childhood made her feel really insecure.
It is so sad that such a superb talent should destroy herself like that. How much of her pain and illness was due to the prejudice against anyone who isn't 'normal' weight in our sick media? The skeleton models we see tottering down the catwalks today are testimony that the we have learned NOTHING from her early death.
I think people need to think of today's celebrities and what they pass off as truth when it is anything but. I love Karen but she could not come out with the obvious truth.
Mind you, she's not lying, at least, to her it is not a lie. It is typical for this disease that sufferers don't aknowledge that they have a problem and because they can hide it so well they often get help too late.
Mind you, she's not lying, at least, to her it is not a lie. It is typical for this disease that sufferers don't aknowledge that they have a problem and becease they can hide it so well they often get help to late.
@EvanConnellyNovacek Is there a website somewhere that quotes her as saying she believed in Jesus? That is interesting and I would be glad to know if it were true of course. Please post.
"He came here for me, born of a virgin He came here for me God's only son come to set the world free, born of God's love and He came here for me. Savior, of the world I praise thee Jesus, Lamb of God...
He came here for me, Born to this world, then He died here for me"
Karen had a one of a kind voice. It's a real shame what happened and what she went through. She was always a role model for me when I was younger. I always thought she was so beautiful. Wish she could've seen how important and beautiful she was and known how much other people loved her. Would love to hear her voice today. I know she would still be great.
so upsetting :'( the woman inter-vier laked compassion and sensitivity on her anorexia it was very clear and apparent that she was why did she need to ask her and put her in that position? i just wish someone would have told her how beautiful she was before the anorexia and how beautiful she could have been again , but unfortunately it was too late for Karen i just hope that people will be more observant and recognize that it is an illness and catch it in time so that this doesn't happen again
@japimportssuck Unfortunately, people with body dysmorphia would never believe anyone who told them that the' look better heavier. In the mind of the anorexic, there's always improvements to be made; "improvements' meaning, losing weight and becoming thinner. It's not about what she looks like. It's about how SHE sees herself: self perception and, moreso, about control.People with anorexia are exercising control in a morbid, disillusioned way. They lack realistic perspective and it is so sad :-(
@japimportssuck thats not the way to deal with it because thats suggesting to her that body size is important when we all know its not. Thats like telling someone who believes in god that god doesnt exist.
@MrJamesmusic "Karen, Eat something you look like a skeleton on meth." Truth Hurts and Helps, but if its a serious disease, maybe she just needed to be the one that exposed the disease to everyone. Clearly, in this video, shes in denial and the current method of treatment wasnt working.
She had a tough spirit and a sometimes stubborn one.
It was said that "nobody could tell her anything" without her taking it personal or getting angry...I wish she would have listened when people were telling her about her illness. You could tell right there (in the interview) that she was pissed when the hostess was revealing what everyone else could clearly see. It was awkward and uncomfortable for everyone else, but she was totally oblivious. Shame
hope you're r.i.p Karen. You were THEE best singer..and once you left, it went down hill. Im happy your ears dont have to be so insulted by hearing "singers" like Rebecca Black and all the insipid garbage that has become music. Thank you for *your* heavenly voice.
hope you're r.i.p Karen. You were THEE best singer..and once you left, it went down hill. Im happy your ears dont have to be so insulted by hearing "singers" like Rebecca Black and all the insipid garbage that has become music. Thank you for our heavenly voice.
Conditions like Anorexia Nervosa are much deeper than that. You could grab Karen by the shoulders, look into her eyes & tell her that she was sick & needed help immediately but she would never believe you... because she sincerely believed she was not ill; that is a feature of this 'mental illness'. Many people were already imploring her to get help- for a condition she didn't believe she had. She was fatally ill. Everyone please try to forgive her & remember her for her beautiful gifts of song.
@DrFlippin Publicly she was still in denial at this point, but privately she had been reading Levenkron's book "The Best Little Girl in the World" and had been talking to Cherry Boone O'Neill, who had anorexia nervosa. She finally sought help in 1982, but it was too little, too late.
She looks really ill in this interview ! Why didn't nobody pick this up ? I know anorexia is a horrible thing and back then it probably wasn't recognised as an illness as it is today , but for gods sake the woman was in need of some kind of help ! Who knows what pressures etc goes on in showbiz but not worth that . Karen I first heard u sing when I was 12 and your voice still sends shivers down my spine 38 years later . Thank you ! And may you forever sing with the angels that sent you down to
You tell em Karen.... "Its my body and I'll die if I want to".
I miss you, we all miss you, but if you wanted to leave this world your way, then it's your life and no one has a damn thing to say about it. We will hate that you are gone but we will love you forever.
@LauraBeachnut At this point in 1981, she was still in denial, but by 1982, she actively sought help- so no, she didn't want to leave the world that way ("I've gotta lick this before it licks me.") Unfortunately, the "treatment" didn't work, and wasn't the "quick fix" she was hoping for She gained 30 pounds intravenously, moved home, and considered herself "cured," even eating a big meal the night before she died. Sadly, the damage had already been done.
She Was Beautifull Fat Medium And Thin She Could Do It All What A Woman What A Voice And She Could Drum With The Best Now She Drums In Heaven You Know Thats Right. Thankyou Karen!.
@djs765ify When you think about it, with all the medical physicians we have with so many years of education and experience and they cannot master body maintenance of nutrition and proper weight in people. Many don't know but some physicians will slyly cast a patient aside if they are overweight or not see them. So what good are they. Too much pressure in the public eye. A person's body should not be allowed to be critiqued by every single person. You have to think too the traveling she did.
@Skyheartstar777 Neurological diseases can be very hard to diagnose and even harder to treat. There is limited ethical approval (and sometimes limited interest) in studies relating to this area. 'body maintenance of nutrition and proper weight in people' is well understood but this is not usually the issue with those with eating disorders as they usually require counselling rather than nutritional advice.
Yes but while nobody gives a shit whether you are alive or not, the whole world still mourns Karen Carpenter. Well, maybe not the WHOLE world because there will always be assholes like yourself.
You guys should check out Little Girl Blue. It talks about how RC stopped the interview because the interviewee kept pushing the anorexia questions. She kept on despite obvious negative reactions from Karen. RC threatened to pull the plug if the questioning didn't move in the direction of their music. The producers caved and the interview resumed. The book is really detailed, more in dept than Ray Colemans book because Ray coleman was at the mercy of Agnes&Richard.
ive never seen this entire interview so i dont know if richard was sitting next to her in it...but i wish if he was that he had said something...like karen u need help...i know its none of our business but imagine if he had been brave enough to come out publically and challenge her...?...who knows..i loved karen...she was one of a kind..x
@dukieboy007 She was in denial. Denial is a psychological tool we use when reality is too painful or difficult for us to face. We simply tell ourselves that it ain't so. We "pretend" things aren't as bad as they really are. Karen's illness at the time wasn't discussed or understood out in the open as it is now. After all, it was about 27 years ago when she died.
No one could help her. She wanted to have something, that she could not achieve: a narrow waist. But, the hip is made of bone, not fat. She could not or would not understand it. As a child, she was chubby and as a teen. As she lost weight, she looked better and got many compliments. The rest of the story, you can imagine.
@MegaSmud I'm sorry though it's people like you that create these problems, In my and other peoples opinions Karen Carpenter was "NEVER" chubby, not even as a child- teenager, she was a perfect weight, I'm sick of hearing and reading about her being chubby, if she was chubby I would like to see your impression of fat! If I read this once more I'm going to have it marked as spam!
@MegaSmud Overweight???? Again I disagree, I guess I have a different view of what is chubby-fat, all i know that my child will never have that pressue heaped on her!!
@Angelbaby31able As Karen lost weight, all said she looks good: Richard, Tony Peluso, etc. I have never claimed, that she was fat. The Weather Girls are fat, Karen was plump.
@MegaSmud I have seen the old footage of her and again I don't think she was plump, if you took her big clothes away she was simply petite, I think you should look back at the older footage and realise her clothes drowned her out, she was a perfect build,...... pity karen and yourself didn't think so, maybe she would still be here today. I will check out the weather girls btw
Noone should pretend to guess what Karen Carpenter was going through in her final years -everyone has their demons- and Karen Carpenter surely had hers. Let's just enjoy what she left us which was that crystalline voice which brought beautiful music to all of us and surely will for many decades more.
Although Karen was denying her condition in public (no different than any other sick celebrity) in private she had been working with her girlfriends to find doctors and treatment for several years. She'd already spoken with Pat Boone's daughter, read articles and books. She knew what was wrong with her pretty much from day one, and she knew why she was doing it, and it nothing to do with "being fat." She was on a hunger strike until her family acknowledged her and Richard let her play the drums
I dont want to seem ignorant or unsympathetic, but if i were a doctor id just tell an anorexic to watch the food network for awhile and tell them that they look great and food tastes good.
besides the obvious psychological issues that anorexics face could we be overlooking a simple answer, maybe they have something wrong with their tastebuds. i hardly ever hear anything about people testing tastebuds we should look into that
OMG she is so scary in this video, she looks 60 years old

Xenobia10 2 months ago
@michaelleacy Karen was giving her brother a hard time(when she rolled her eyes at him) because he laughed when she said"I have no idea what six stone in weight is". They were very close and I am almost positive it was just a brother and sister interacting in a loving way! Give her a break, Karen was also dealing with a very sensitive and private ordeal.
spider62able 2 months ago
Well, Karen's half-right. Sue asks her if she weighed 84 lbs in 1975, but she weighed 89 lbs then. Sadly, during this interview in 1981, she probably weighed even less than that...

this video is hurtful. She may have been in denial, which as anyone who has had a disease... may it be drugs, alcohol, etc would know that denial is the number 1 excuse for saying "yes I have a problem but can not come to terms with it." sad that we lost her. She was great and I wish she was still around touring to this day. I would have paid good money to be fortunate enough to here that wonderful voice.

tokersrule 3 months ago

Mind you, she's not lying, at least, to her it is not a lie. It is typical for this disease that sufferers don't aknowledge that they have a problem and because they can hide it so well they often get help too late.

"Here Come For Me" by The Carpenters
"He came here for me, born of a virgin He came here for me God's only son come to set the world free, born of God's love and He came here for me. Savior, of the world I praise thee Jesus, Lamb of God...
He came here for me, Born to this world, then He died here for me"
Compare Acts 16:30-31, Romans 10:13 :D
May God rest Karen's soul with Him in the Kingdom of heaven

@sentry221 The Carpenters were raised Methodist. However, both Karen and Richard disliked the hypocrisy in religion (as do I).

did anyone tell her, she would be prettier with more weight?
japimportssuck 8 months ago
@japimportssuck Unfortunately, people with body dysmorphia would never believe anyone who told them that the' look better heavier. In the mind of the anorexic, there's always improvements to be made; "improvements' meaning, losing weight and becoming thinner. It's not about what she looks like. It's about how SHE sees herself: self perception and, moreso, about control.People with anorexia are exercising control in a morbid, disillusioned way. They lack realistic perspective and it is so sad :-(
denisethepainter 8 months ago 2
@japimportssuck thats not the way to deal with it because thats suggesting to her that body size is important when we all know its not. Thats like telling someone who believes in god that god doesnt exist.

You can tell she was a fighter though...
Shame

DrFlippin 9 months ago
@DrFlippin Publicly she was still in denial at this point, but privately she had been reading Levenkron's book "The Best Little Girl in the World" and had been talking to Cherry Boone O'Neill, who had anorexia nervosa. She finally sought help in 1982, but it was too little, too late.

Sadly, the damage had already been done.

djs765ify 10 months ago
@djs765ify When you think about it, with all the medical physicians we have with so many years of education and experience and they cannot master body maintenance of nutrition and proper weight in people. Many don't know but some physicians will slyly cast a patient aside if they are overweight or not see them. So what good are they. Too much pressure in the public eye. A person's body should not be allowed to be critiqued by every single person. You have to think too the traveling she did.
Skyheartstar777 10 months ago
@Skyheartstar777 Neurological diseases can be very hard to diagnose and even harder to treat. There is limited ethical approval (and sometimes limited interest) in studies relating to this area. 'body maintenance of nutrition and proper weight in people' is well understood but this is not usually the issue with those with eating disorders as they usually require counselling rather than nutritional advice.

The book is really detailed, more in dept than Ray Colemans book because Ray coleman was at the mercy of Agnes&Richard.

dukieboy007 11 months ago

MegaSmud 1 year ago
@MegaSmud I'm sorry though it's people like you that create these problems, In my and other peoples opinions Karen Carpenter was "NEVER" chubby, not even as a child- teenager, she was a perfect weight, I'm sick of hearing and reading about her being chubby, if she was chubby I would like to see your impression of fat! If I read this once more I'm going to have it marked as spam!
