Let me guess? This beautiful, musically gifted woman has 22 dislikes from people who are jealous from their core. If this woman were white, u haters would have her as a future r&r hall of famer.
As both a musician and a singer, i know how hard it is to do both at the same time, and the complexity of her instrument, is beyond words...i respect her so much for being able to do both effortlesly as well as understanding how to compose music. She's amazing, no if's ands or buts about it.
@singersdream1999 look, i love Justin and everything, but I believe no such robbery occured. Justin knew well not to expect too much at the Grammy's, because there's a history of artists that young being nominated, like he was, but not winning. And, besides, the category was "Best New Artist", a matter of quality, not "Most Appearances on Posters, T-Shirts, Pillows, Stickers and Toothbrushes".
@singersdream1999 The thing is, Esperanza doesn't use autotune. And she plays an incredibly difficult instrument with astonishing virtuosity as she sings songs written better than Bieber could ever hope to compose.
@pwrgawd I was SO EXCITED that someone was finally going to answer my question--which I thought was legitimate--but I guess I have to keep waiting.
I'll be nice and answer YOUR question, though: No, there was no sarcasm in my original post. I haven't really listened to enough jazz to make a statement like that, but this one isn't really my thing. Maybe I need more pop elements in my music...this seems to be all over the place, like a jam session or something. If that's jazz, I'll pass. Fair?
@sunsofguns The answer to your question: The Grammy Award for Best New Artist has been awarded since 1959.[1] Years reflect the year in which the Grammy Awards were handed out, for records released in the previous year. The official guidelines are as follows: For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the PUBLIC IDENTITY of that artist. Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist. This is from Wikipedia.
@sunsofguns I did the research for you which didn't take long. Also Mumford and Sons released an album in 2008 so at least pertaining to this year this is not exclusive to ES. With all that said yes it is fair because if pop is your taste then that is your taste. As for myself Bieber does zero for me. His lyrics are vacuous and he to my knowledge plays no instruments. There is other pop music I like but not him. To be fair the person that should have been nominated and WON is Janelle Monae.
@pwrgawd Oh, no! I didn't mean to imply that I like pop or Justin Bieber. I was just asking a question. This is humiliating. :(
By 'pop elements' I meant elements infused with rock/punk/metal, especially regarding the structure of the song itself. That's what I like. But I do love Paloma Faith for some odd reason...
And you did the research but you're still holding back? You're awful. I can't decide if I care enough to do it myself. As for Bieber, I'm pretty sure he plays the heart strings.
I don't quite understand the people complaining that the guitar doesn't fit into the jazz setting. That's a pretty typical fusion tone. It sounds alright, I think.
While you are congratulating the Grammy people for recognizing the obvious, please also congratulate and SUPPORT Public Broadcasting, without which 4-year old Esperanza wouldn't have been inspired to be a musicion. (Bless Mister Rogers) and Public Radio, which is where I and so many others were lucky enough to hear her beauty when no one else was playing her.
however let me add that I did read about her personal opinion and what not, about women in music and such, and I found myself saying yes yes yes! Yes Esperenza.
no no no im so sorry but no. Im glad beiber didnt win, but do you really think this musician will influence many other musicians? no be real with yourself. I looked her up honestly hoping to like ehr music, but I find it to be impossible to even listen to. I really do apologize. I was open minded but no. no no no. This is the epitome of jazz. And by that I mean terrible. Sorry.
@nobodymm Prince and Stevie Wonder would beg to differ... and I think they've got pretty good taste in music =)
And I do think she will influence others both musically and in terms of being yourself. She has been true to herself throughout her career, and I think that's one of the reasons many people didn't know about her before. Had she been prancing around half naked like most women these days, she would have been recognized long ago.
Im not sure Prince takes much influence from Jazz, and Stevie Wonder rarely. But moving on I totally agree with your second comment, about her being herself and such. Please read my comment that I had posted directly above my other comment. I gave her a good comment too.... Thanks for the reply.
Prince is the son of a jazz musician and Stevie can and does play great jazz. But jazz isn't a commercial music that sells to audiences like it used to back before Rock and Roll. Prince and Stevie can both hold their own with the best jazz players, but they 'choose' to play more commercial music because that's what sells.
Yeah maybe they do take some influence from jazz. but it doesn't show up much in the stuff from Prince that I have heard. Nor does it show up much in the stuff from Stevie wonder that i know either. I do own two Herbie Hancock Albums, so I'm not totally anti-jazz, I just rarely find it listenable. that's all. thanks again.

LMAO @ elenispqr. Surely, u are not a humbled persona. I SUPPOSE YOUR IQ fails u at every turn since most know that people of South America, Candians and US are called Americans and of course, Adults know justin's music plays to pre-teens and teenagers-- mostly girls, who are supported by adult parents! So, like those beiber young minds, u assume 2 much and babble about what U think.
is that really her hair? truly amazing she beat out the others for best new artist not because she's not deserving, but bec of the genre. she's born to perform.
so im a teenage gurl nd i dont lyk bieber i culd care less 4 his music. ima a musician and i luv listenin 2 jazz. its my fav genre so dont think of da steriotypical girls all da time. there are a few of us out here tht know wat real music is ;) im glad i found out bout her but imad i didn't know bout here b4 da grammys...ive been stuck on country music tehehehe :)
this...person won over bieber,,,, perhaps i've been wrong all along and the world is presided over by a just and loving god.
i don't keep up with pop culture but i can't help but see the jonases, cyruses and biebers come and go and can count on being repulsed by a fresh new autotune ready face and a new batch of senseless tween girls ready to waste daddys money every few years. this is actually good. i'm speechless.
Can I just point out that I am still a teen and I prefer Esperanza to Bieber. I just see pure talent with Esperanza, but when I see Bieber in interviews he seems a bit like a show off and quite cocky.
But that's just my opinion, so beliebers, please stop hating us Esperanza fans. Swearing at us will just make us dislike him even more.
To all you Justin Beiber fans we as adults seen this movie to many time, new kids on the block,Menudo, and backstreet boys,in two years it will be Justin who? Just enjoy good music while you have a chance.
@elnepisqr Sweetie, not all Americans are ignorant. To make a statement like this makes you extremely ignorant. Just because a bunch of teenage girls and some people didn't/do not know who this young woman is does not mean that all Americans don't know. Please come correct next time.
@SHOCKER9638 this I real music as long with classic rock.... Justin beiber does not sing real music and as a matter of fact it's only little girls who wish they had a chance with him that like him. He cannot sing and his songs are terrible. Same thing goes for rap and hip hop and some country. It's pretty stupid. But Justin beibers little girl fans are what make him what he is today. He should not be where he is today or had gotten that Grammy for best new artist.
Real talent won on the Grammy Show... now I am really scared about 2012...lol... seriously though... can't wait to see Espernza in concert... on the other hand... would pay to "not to see" Justin Bieber.
Thankx Grammy's, I never heard of her, she slipped right through my music crack. This is how music started, She just brought it back back real storng like a bad-ass fart!!
People need to realize that if they wanna win a grammy, they gotta do jazz. I love Esperanze and I'd heard of her, but I too was surprised when she won. But then I wasn't. Remember when album of the year went to Herbie Hancock?! Remember how RANDOM THAT was?! I guess you gotta do jazz to win it. hahaha.
@Mikizzle15 Well im not suprised at all cause when you have two musical genius such as prince and stevie wonder telling the NARAS about how talented this woman is,and how she brings a fresh of breath air to the industry then trust and belive there gonna take noticed, and no you dont have to do jazz to win a grammy (which we all kno that) but you have to have some kinda talent, and im glad they prove that this year at the grammys
Borefest!!! Good classical jazzy blues type artist. Real musician - yes. Commercially successful - hell to the naaaawww!! She'll end playing jazz clubs and opening for AC classical musicians and singers, a yaaawner. For eclectic tastes. Distant memory this time next year.
@mcworld999 We'll see what happens to her. I've never heard of it. We can't deny she's talented but it's much too early to dismiss her. I agree that she's not commerical or mainstream. I think this Grammy win might pressure her to become more mainstream. It'll be a shame if she does compromise her music to become a Top 40 artist. She's got a pretty voice but we'll see what happens. Definetly someone to keep your eye on.
I'd never heard about Esperanza Spalding before the Grammys, but I love the fact that she won.
It's comforting to know that not ALL hope is lost for the greed-corrupt music industry, that it's not always a popularity contest, and that the Grammys still have some integrity.
@kiikat yes.. your absolutely right..even here at manila... we don't know spalding besides a brand of ball....everyone here is Beiver fans....now i know better more.... yes, she really deserve the recognition of GRAMMY b4 the BABY ARTIST...awesome talent one out of millions...
...last night when she got up and accepted the grammy i was like WHO THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!? Thank you Grammys for introducing me to this amazing singer <3
I like "Webbie" also, but i've found there should also be a balance. I saw her first on David Letterman i 2008. Listening to her is like riding a bicycle on a cool spring morning! Aaaaah! Gotta love it!! PS She also sang at Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Pres. Obama in Norway. She is a "Bad Chick" in more ways than one.

so im a teenage gurl nd i dont lyk bieber i culd care less 4 his music. ima a musician and i luv listenin 2 jazz. its my fav genre so dont think of da steriotypical girls all da time. there are a few of us out here tht know wat real music is ;) im glad i found out bout her but imad i didn't know bout here b4 da grammys...ive been stuck on country music tehehehe :)
hottestgymnastever 11 months ago 3
this...person won over bieber,,,, perhaps i've been wrong all along and the world is presided over by a just and loving god.
i don't keep up with pop culture but i can't help but see the jonases, cyruses and biebers come and go and can count on being repulsed by a fresh new autotune ready face and a new batch of senseless tween girls ready to waste daddys money every few years. this is actually good. i'm speechless.
OrTheThirdPerson 11 months ago 7
Can I just point out that I am still a teen and I prefer Esperanza to Bieber. I just see pure talent with Esperanza, but when I see Bieber in interviews he seems a bit like a show off and quite cocky.
But that's just my opinion, so beliebers, please stop hating us Esperanza fans. Swearing at us will just make us dislike him even more.
She won. Live with it.

Finally a real artist,no auto tune.

Why American people don't know about Esperanza??? Because her smart and talented music is above the average American musical IQ.
elnepisqr 11 months ago 6
@elnepisqr Well not all of us americans cuz i been a fan of her since she first came out,but i would have to agree with you lol

thelivingpoet 11 months ago

IiImike28 11 months ago
Saw her at Newport Jazz Festival years back. She has been international way b4 this. Dallas Violinist here. Book me today!!

Real talent won on the Grammy Show... now I am really scared about 2012...lol... seriously though... can't wait to see Espernza in concert... on the other hand... would pay to "not to see" Justin Bieber.

People need to realize that if they wanna win a grammy, they gotta do jazz. I love Esperanze and I'd heard of her, but I too was surprised when she won. But then I wasn't. Remember when album of the year went to Herbie Hancock?! Remember how RANDOM THAT was?! I guess you gotta do jazz to win it. hahaha.
Mikizzle15 11 months ago
@Mikizzle15 Well im not suprised at all cause when you have two musical genius such as prince and stevie wonder telling the NARAS about how talented this woman is,and how she brings a fresh of breath air to the industry then trust and belive there gonna take noticed, and no you dont have to do jazz to win a grammy (which we all kno that) but you have to have some kinda talent, and im glad they prove that this year at the grammys
slick1hit 11 months ago
shes not a new artist but she is talented
bsweetie2010 11 months ago
Borefest!!! Good classical jazzy blues type artist. Real musician - yes. Commercially successful - hell to the naaaawww!! She'll end playing jazz clubs and opening for AC classical musicians and singers, a yaaawner. For eclectic tastes. Distant memory this time next year.
mcworld999 11 months ago

Congratz Esperanza, you obviously deserve it.
kiikat 11 months ago 124
@kiikat yes.. your absolutely right..even here at manila... we don't know spalding besides a brand of ball....everyone here is Beiver fans....now i know better more.... yes, she really deserve the recognition of GRAMMY b4 the BABY ARTIST...awesome talent one out of millions...
MegaAlvin9999 11 months ago
@kiikat AMEN! I couldn't have said it much better. A real musician, a real artist has won over bubblegum b.s. Indeed, all hope is not lost.
