I gotta disagree with you about the AI of the wingmen: it sucked. Nothing was more annoying than finishing a mission and then the wingmen dies because they crash into the Tiger's Claw at the end. The enemy AI isn't much better so it balances out.
This game was also the hardest WC game, especially the escort missions because the capships don't yet have the tough shields and seem to be made of paper maché, making them very hard to protect.
I never thought the original Wing Commander by itself was very hard because the enemy AI is pretty easy to predict and they never really overwhelm you except for maybe the final mission if you're out to destroy all of the enemies to get the medal. And Kurosawa 5 you just have to be lucky to beat sometimes though you don't have to beat it to continue on.
The Secret Missions packs are absolutely brutal though. Limping back to the Claw and having to defend it is nuts sometimes.
I just remember having much more trouble with this game than with any of the follow ups. I agree about Secret Missions though, I never managed to finish those. :-)
I never managed to succeed in Kurasawa, and always had to take the Rostov path afterwards (and you're right you can still get back on the winning path from there). The introduction of phase shields and torpedoes in WC2 made the escort missions much more manageable. :-)
Wing Commander was an awesome game. The first two are my favourites.

Still an awesome game and my favourite franchise.
