  • what she does at 0:34 is really cool!! I figured out revised it and now I'm using something similar in my college's dance concert thanks!! those are sssooo fun!! you all did a beautiful job!! I miss competing!!

  • wow SO MUCH has changed since then! i love the dresses, and the dancing is so good! it seems better than it does today.

  • wow look how much the solo dresses has changed!!!!

  • Curling one's hair also sux btw :oP

  • Sadly, this was about the time Wigs would have started to come in :(

Bye, bye to the glory days of natural hair.

  • are arms useless in ireland?

  • why do people always think that just because they don't like something it makes it horrible? no one really cares about your opinion, to be honest. you're outnumbered ten thousand dancers to one...so, i would keep your nasty opinions to yourself. if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything, ya know? get with the times, glitter and wigs are in. let us do what we do and mind your own business.

  • @allisonforfornsed I look awesome in my pepto bismol pink sparkly ruffly dress. More awesome than you'll ever look in anything. We love our dresses and have the dancing to back them up so go away!

  • While some may take their looks over the top, I think overall the current trends are being influenced by the more traditional look. The dresses have also evolved to become easier to dance in. I'm with RedHead. If you don't like it, then leave it.

  • And that number 37 is fantastic, she's really representin'! I like her dress too.

  • that dress on number 78 is the prettiest irish dancing dress I've ever seen, and I like how her hair is loose.

  • what year did the 25th worlds take place?

  • Its crazy how much the dancing has changed!! Those dresses look like school dresses and are SUPER highwaisted, u never see high waists anymore. The dancing is like novice/prizewinner level. Those steps look really different... ours a lot more complicate now!

  • @aabbigator217 no, your steps are not nearly as intricate as the steps of old. there is just more movement in current steps and too many influences from other dance forms.

  • @jjd666

what's wrong with it being a sport, it's still an art, but it has grown in to one of the most fun competitive sports

  • 0:40 - 0:52 (girl in red) you can see where irish dance started to become a sport rather than a graceful art.

  • catriona hale? she danced in LOTD, didn't she? :D

  • 0:21 - I would love to know who that girl is that dances across screen in a blue dress with orange underlayer, cause that dress is the spitting image of my second dress I had when I was 12....and I am absolutely 100% sure that this is it danced in by it's previous owner......it's uncanny!

  • I really do love Irish dancing, but those dresses... the sheer weight of them! And the skirts alone are probably about the entire length of our dresses now. I know a lot of people protest against the big wigs and the makeup and expensive dresses and tanning... but that's half the fun! Irish dance is a beautiful art form that has developed into one of the most amazing sports, and people should have no problem with that.

  • @MyRedHead314 actually, no offense, but I think the wigs and the garish dresses are really tacky. They are cheapening the promotion of irish culture these days. It's like the recent "princess" phenomenon among young girls is glaring all over the irish dance world... pepto bismol pink sequined dresses and insane wigs. I find it preposterous.

  • @allisonforfornsed How can you call the dresses garish? They are some of the most beautiful pieces of art I've seen. Sure there are other things about our sport that are, for lack of a better word, "cheapening" it, but I don't think that is one of them. The only thing I can think to say now is- if you don't like what you see, try to stop looking.

  • @MyRedHead314 I call the dresses garish mostly because of the use of color (hideous garish, vulgar colors like vomit/neon/ hot pink) that lack any traditional element, along with the tacky splattering of things like sequins all over, too much ruffles....just stuff that is not traditional, and is very tacky and juvenile. I've seen some nice ones in the past, but they seem to get worse every day....and those horrible, ridiculous wigs!! and those tiaras!! sometimes the girls just look ridiculous

  • lol I'm and Irish dancer and I find this to be hilarious. Dancing is way harder now; they're doing the steps of a novice at the Worlds.

  • How ridiculous!

  • amazing stuff here! they're all so good! i see why each one is there! :D i can barely hear the hard shoes unfortunately :(

  • Does anyone know the name of the musicans? also the names to any of the Slip jigs?

  • Amazing. Old good times :)

  • Who is number 76? I think she won?

  • @McBronagh Catriona Hale.Yes,she won.I think she won the World championships most years she entered. You could watch her dance forever, she so good.

  • wow. It just looks... fast. Respect!

  • Is Irish dancing a sport?

  • realy would love to know where this fotage came from and why clips like these never seem to come out after recent world champion ships :)

  • @TheCorrinemaria They are on videos I own this one myself! There is one for the 25th championships and the 30th (i think) I know that you can buy the videos from ebay!

  • What is that movement called when they like shake their foot? The girl on the right does it at 0:03, the girl nearer the front does it at 0:28, and the dancer at 1:00 does it as well. I've been trying to find the name of it everywhere!

  • @McBronagh My school calls them shuffles though different schools have different names for moves!

  • @McBronagh Our school calls them "flicks," but like rachhhx said every school has different names.

  • Catriona Hale have danced in LOTD,haven't she ?

Can anyone give me some information about her ,she is one of my fav dancers but I can't find anything about her on Internet .

  • @tanushka1dancer: She was an original member of LOTD - when Troupe 2 was formed she moved from the original troupe to dance there, and then when Troupe 3 was formed (Vegas) she became the original Morrighan with Kristin Butke. She's married to Declan Bucke (original T3 Dark Lord).

  • Apparently there's a law that you gotta have ridiculously curly hair to dance :P

  • What year it was held ?

    really amazing !!!

  • @tanushka1dancer This was held in April 1994 :)

  • Does anyone know what year this was?

  • @CestTresChiquex lets not kid ourselves... that dancing isn't even that traditional anymore...

  • omg wat een dans !

  • what year was this?

  • can irish dancing please go back to this?

  • This is a joy to watch. Does anyone know where I could see the complete dances from this video? I would appreciate very much if someone could send me a link or something :)

  • THIS IS REAL DANCING.

  • less of them hover their jumps like we do today....

  • I have to say I like todays dresses better-like ones that look like this still but are made in like silk or tafetta because they are so shiny and pretty, but I do like these style of skirts. i dont think its fair when some have these heavier skirts and some have the light weight bubble shirts. But I love the cupcake skirts. those are my absolute fave.

  • Thanks for putting these up! My teacher's in this video-she's 16!

  • :[ I wish we could go back to the traditional dresses.

  • i iirish dance and im on my b and c

  • trebles in softshoe? cooool. it's weird how nowadays softshoe portions of championships are almost always reels and this is a slip jig.

  • these dresses are not traditional, look back say 70 years ago- did the dancers then were these dresses shown in this video? nope. they wore things like long skirts/dresses. somewhere along the years dancers have began to wear these dresses and eventualy the have became more glamourised. i think if you like the wigs and fancy dresses then good for you go wear it, but if you dont then go natural hair and a plain costume! lets be honest here, the only "traditional" thing now is the dancing! :) x

  • @xCestTresChiquex we kinda have to wear the 'glamourised' dresses, wigs, shoes, etc. our teachers do not let us wear anything that is not the newest fashion. if you do not wear a wig, you get MAJOR points deducted from your score,

besides, now, there is an appearance category under scoring. if you don't look good, then you can't participate.

  • @LostonThamesStreet i have watched several videos on youtube for the parade of champs and in a few of them there has been a girl who has not worn a wig yet she has still managed to become a champion?? no-ine stopped her from competing. When i mentioned "glamourised" dresses, i am talking about the dresses with 1000000 diamonds upon them and over the top styles, i meerly mean that if you want to wear a simple dress do it because it's the dancing that makes you a champion, not the dress or the wig

  • @xCestTresChiquex you are correct- the way you dress doesn't not determine your level. buuttt, if you are going to dance at that level, you need to look the part.

by saying 'you can't participate', i meant within the school. some (most, really) tell their students that they shouldn't compete until they have the whole nine yards.

my dress is sparkley, but the judges don't start having a seizure from the light refracting. some are a tad 'over the top', but meet standards.

  • @LostonThamesStreet my main point of the comment up there was to state that the dresses in this video are not "traditional" because itish dancers say like 80 years ago didn't wear them, and i had noticed that there were a lot of comments about how "we wish irish dancing dresses could be more traditional like this" etc- thus, i was trying to state that times change and if you don't like the new dresses (which i personally do like) don't wear them, wear perhaps a slightly plainer dress

  • @xCestTresChiquex so I can just wear whatever I want for a contest and wont be disqualified because of it? or is it obligatory to wear the wig and the dress??

  • @TheAngelgirl7 You aren't required to wear a wig, but there are standards and rules for the costume and shoes part of it. For example your dress cant be too short, and you cant show up to compete in just your practice shorts and shirt. You might want to do an online search about the official rules though still!

  • @xCestTresChiquex I totally agree, all except for the "traditional dancing" part....simply because the dancing is somewhat traditional, but has been altered slightly for stylistic and athletic competitive reasons.

  • @allisonforfornsed I'd also like to add that it is like a commenter said below, that influences from other dance forms "i.e. french and continental", etc.....

  • @allisonforfornsed yes i very much agree with that :)

  • @xCestTresChiquex Seems like we have about the same opinions on the subject!

  • @allisonforfornsed yes well great minds think alike!

  • @xCestTresChiquex ahh god yes! i did irish dancing when i was younger and loved it until i found out in competitions you had to wear these crazy sparkly dresses and curly wigs... i gave it up after that :S

  • @xCestTresChiquex but these dresses are still much nicer than what they wear nowadays! I was quite asthonished to see how they had changed when I watched the World Championship 2011!

  • @fieldgen i think it's just a matter of opinion really :) i personally like the celtic designs on the dresses in this video but i like the shape and styles of the modern dresses nowadays, quite a lot of dresses now are encompasing celtic designs in them

  • Can someone tell me what year this was? Thanks.

  • who is the girl at 0:16

  • Comment removed

  • OMG how steps have changed.... i think if most of those dancers did the same steps the way they just did them in that video today... they wouldn't even get a look in.... which is technically wrong. Would be good if everyone could just get judged on the basics such as turning out feet, sorting posture etc... before the steps come into play...

  • I love the way the costumes move, especially on the spins.

  • There needs to be more places out there to find out more about irish dancing. The only place I think is great is the website for Irish Dancing Magazine. The magazine is awesome too

  • however, those first few moment on stage before you start dancing the judges look at both girls and decide who they want to watch. Basically you're both fighting for the judge's eyes and people do whatever they can to catch it.

  • @annelisethedancer913 so true!

  • people people please. the reason that people fake tan and use bright colors and sparkles is so they stand out. so they make a good first impression on the judges. and commision is not all about looks. you could have the ugliest dress, face, everything, but ifyou were the best dancer you would most likely win. but, if an ugly girl was onstage next to a tan girl with a sparkly dress, they would probably watch the girl more who looked like a champ. the main focus is dancing...

  • Man I didn't even start dancing around this time and I miss the traditional aspect of this! lol.

  • im 18 and i plan on irish dancing soon, ive done ballet, tap, jazz for 14 years so it will be nice to try something new, i have a friend who is in championship, and i will never ever understand why you have to fake tan in irish dancing, for gods sakes irish people are white, im italian/irish and i got the olive skin so if i compete ill never have to worry about the tanning. i also dislike the super sparkly dresses, reminds me of some of my tap/jazz costumes, some of these simple dresses are nice!

  • @taryndancer29

No you don't have to wear Fake Tan,

    What are you on about.

Only in Commision you have to look good, Not in CRN Irish Dancing

  • @IAmMcLovin14693

my friend who does irish dancing says she always has to fake tan, so idn :S whats commision? and crn?

  • @IAmMcLovin14693

Commision is where you HAVE to look good,

When CRN is when you DANCE and get rated on dancing and not looking good :D

  • @IAmMcLovin14693

    CRN definetly sounds better haha

  • @IAmMcLovin14693 crn ftw. we're so much more traditional at crn and we're all like a big family.

  • omg the girl with the twists at the beginning! that was really cool

  • Sore toes just watching this

  • OMG! i can't believe there are dancers from Marie Martin school of irish dancing there! thats where i go and believe me the best isn't even good enough for her -.-

  • irish dancing was so simple back then lol!! no complicated moves

  • No.76-Catriona Hale,UK.-Lotd.

    No.26-Eileen Martin,Dublin.-Riverdance( lead)

    No.37-Linda Cawte,Dublin-Lotd.

    No.11-Tara Barry,Cork-Riverdance.

    No.16-Kathleen Keady-New york-Lotd

  • They make this look easy, but believe you me, it's not!

  • i bet 76 won!

  • nope, you just have to dance around the other person using as much of the floor as possible to get noticed :L

  • Pardon my ignorance, but at the beginning when there are two people dancing at the same time, how do they keep from running into or kicking each other? Do they know what the other dancer is going to do beforehand?

  • Comment removed

  • you dont know what they other dancer is going to do. you just do your routine and if you see that your actually going to run into someone just slightly move out.

  • to livelncolor2: When you ere going to dence in a competition you don`t know what is going to dance the other girl or boy .

in my last competition I was dancing with a boy but becouse we didn`t know the steps of the other he kick me

  • prefieres en español ?

i forgot to tell you that in competitions is forbidden to take videos because the judges disqualify the persons who is dancing

  • These girls have been dancing long enough, and they are surely very used to sharing the stage by now. Collisions still happen, but with enough practice, you eventually learn how to see other people and move around the stage accordingly.

Nowadays, at least where I compete (in the US south, in the grades), the stages are much smaller, so you really have to be careful (and not get too nervous about it, as bumps happen a lot).

You can also ask the other person in which direction they begin moving.

  • Different people from Different dance schools have different dances, so they go different ways while they are dancing. Also, you get used to knowing if your gonna collide with someone or not!

  • THIS is what irish dancing is meant to be about...

not fake tan, make up and wigs and the despicable thing is if you have your hair the way they have theirs in the video you get marks off ..!!!!!!!

please sub to me im doing a year long of daily vlogs!!

  • Wow :)

  • they're so high on their toes!

  • damn! i cant here them trebling!!!! that buggs me!!!

  • normally, you're not supposed to dance beside someone in the same school...but now i guess you can!

  • Wow so different from when I went last year. Haha.

  • the days when irish dance was an art rather than a sport.

  • i like there dress !!! wanna buy the same xD

  • @jjd666 Err no, I believe they're competing in this video. Ergo, sport.

  • @jjd666 why isn't is an art?? as far as I know all kind of dances ballet, jazz, Irish dance are art... right?? :(

  • @jjd666 What's wrong with it being a sport?

  • I'm not competition level yet. These girls make me want to achieve everything! x

  • the dancing these days has become much more ATHLETIC!!! esspecially in soft shoe!

  • i agree

  • wow! these dresss styles have changed dramatically over the years. now alot of people like the older more traditional style of dresses but most dancer today would prefer the glitz and glamour of todays dresses. i know i do, but that could just be because i am a dancer of this era..

  • What year was this one?

  • very beautiful !!

  • haha danny looks EXACTLY the same!

  • This is looks so much more traditional than to what we do today, They have wigs, yes but, nowadays we wear make-up, false tan, and much more up-dated dresses, tbh, i prefer nowdays, but does any one know why thngs changed?

    (: Tanita (:

  • Nobody wore wigs back then, hair was rolled the night before. I don't know why things changed, i left ID around the time of this, infact this was my last worlds! I returned about 4 years ago aged 26, and couldn't believe my eyes, the wigs, tanner, the bling (omg). I think all things progress, and change. Personally i prefer the costumes of old, and the dance style. Nowdays i find it all to aggresive and very 'jerky', not very graceful. But the height the girls get on jumps nowdays is amazing!

  • things changed because people didn't want to spend hours curling their hair when they could spend about three minutes putting on a wig. It's much easier.

  • Sure everyone looks the same these days. Like from one of those "Toddlers & Tiaras" segments. Barbie Dolls in drag. I don't see where the dresses of today have anything to do with Irish culture. I'm sure the cost of these outfits today keep some people out of the running when the emphasis should be on the dancing.

  • Things change because people get more competitive. Some people think the fake tan and layers of makeup help. :P Also, it's just like style in everyday life. You want to keep up with the style so you look just as good as the other dancers. Once one dancer starts something, everyone else does so that they look just as good.

That's just my theory. Things always change over time. You can't expect things to be the same.

  • I from danced when i was 4 and saw both the traditional side of it, and before giving up the last few years it got a lot more americanized i guess. I think one person thought wearing wigs was a good idea and then everyone started to cos it gets them noticed more. My mum still tortured me with the rollers though lol!

  • haha same i wanted a wig sooo bad but my dance teacher wouldnt let me get one because my mum did my hair too good with the old school rollers lol

  • probably because of comfort and safety issues- if your wig falls off (that's a serious WHAT IF lol) and you trip on it or something? yeaaaa... something stupid like that I'm sure had the commissioners scrambling to update the rules.

  • lovely (this is jacobs sis by the way)

  • hahaha, yes, that's so cool:)!!!

  • I had a teacher whose thought process was: "Gold is everything. If you don't get gold you're a bad dancer." Yeah...started to hate competitons and plus I'm probably the least competitive person ever, lol. I just like to dance for the sound and tradition.

  • hm, yeah that could go backwards then maybe. well our teacher says the same thing but it's more to give us a competitive feeling, we don't really take it seriously and when we come home she's still happy with our achievement *g*:) oh yeah, and tradition rocks... forever:)!!!

  • Traditional !!!

  • does anyone prefer these traditional dresses to the ones we wear now? and wigs, ew! I always end up with less hair then what I started out with! gah! I also dislike how short and sparkly the dresses are these days...

  • I prefer the tradition of these dresses, not a fan of all the sparkle and bling. No idea what that or leopard print (as seen on many gavin's) has got to do with ID? Having said that, i prefer the shaoe of todays dresses, with the lower waistline, i find them more flattering. Wig's bluuueeerrggh! Conveinence, yes, any need to have it 4 times the size of your head: NO!!! LOL

  • ...oh i'm so happy there are people who think like you do *g*:)!!! i love these traditional heavy dresses and i don't like the way the new ones get shorter and shorter - and the colours... yuk!!! too bad i feel:(

  • @Lassielurv YAY!! Finally someone shares my opinion on the new dresses. :) Australia isn't a great climate for the old dresses, but we still wear 'em. ;)

  • @Lassielurv my troupe doesn't wear the dresses like that we just wear costumes similar to the Connemara dance group... Who are fantastic, I might add!!

  • @Lassielurv i totally agree! the dresses are so sparkly to attract attention, but nowadays, if you dont have a sparkly dress, then you stand out!!! people haven't figured that out yet. also, the sparkles on the socks?! i'm sure they'll have the sparkles in the wigs soon!

  • @Lassielurv - I am an Irish dancer, and I go to Richens Timm. We still wear the traditional dresses with the collars, and flaps. :)

  • i would break my ankles...

  • I could never figure out how to do those foot flicks side to side like that. I have somewhat weak ankles and they would always give out on me.

  • Boy, do I NOT miss these! I hated competing! I just like to dance. I didn't have a wig yet so I had to curl my hair over night only to have it fall out in 15min (no joke. My hair sucks). lol

  • why did you hate competitions? did your teacher make you go to these, too?

  • Very clever. The design down the bottom of the background looked like something a Maori carving would have in it.

  • This is probably the last 'stage' to Riverdance... well, at least, those girls have to come from somewhere...

  • does anyone know what year this was? i love how they seem to be standing on the tips of their toes in soft shoes, so lightly... beautiful:)!!!

  • not to mention the length of dresses too! those are touching their knees!!

  • wow, styles in irish dance change fast. our wigs, dresses and even makeup are entirely different after only a short time!

  • what year did we start wearing wigs?

  • I think it was around 96 maybe, i left around this time and the new thing was 'hair pieces', basically al they were, were clip on curly pony tails to give a bigger top knot!!! They were made of nylon or acrylic. My hair is so fine it doesn't hold a curl and when my mum putin this ponytail thing, by the time i got to my heavy rounds it looked like a mop head had fallen on me, the rest of my hair was straight. I don't like the look of the wigs but i can understand the conveinience

  • Comment removed

  • this is champion level! duh!

  • It was the World level in like 1994. I'm sure these girls were Open Championship or Prelim at the time.

  • They would all be Open. Back in the day prelim didn't exist. You had to bide your time, no mollycoddiling.

  • They are VERY VERY VERY good! I dance Irish Dance too, and i know, how hard it is!

  • It looks easy, but like you say, if you do it, you'd know otherwise. I wish I could learn something elegant like that, but I can't. Daughter wants yes, parents want no.

  • ma i can't believe how old this is

  • Are the girls at 0:38-0:40 wearing the same dress?

  • they do look really similar, but i think they just had similar designs, it was probably the ;latest; style!

  • Yeh... :D thanx 4 replying!

  • ya i think they are

  • Could someone please tell me the name of the step the girl at 1:28ish does? (although many of the girls in hardshoes do it) -Where she's like traveling to the side? Thanks!

  • I think that it's a heal run, thats what my teacher told me

  • Yep, it's a heel run.

  • we call them drum rolls

  • We call them drum rolls

  • @maple841 drums :)
