HEY MAN LOOK FOR ME ON THE WEB UNDER THING-FEST ALONG WITH RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE THIS OCT .2011 I AM HAVING THIS EVENT IN TORONTO CANADA WHEN THE NEW MOVIE WILL BE OUT WORLD WIDE THIS OCT 14.2011 BLOCK AWAY FROM WHERE THEY FLIMED THE NEW MOVIE! "THING-FEST"..................
Honestly, I think the dog scene has some of the creepiest effects in the whole movie. The wiggly things covering the dogs, the big claw that shoots up and grabs the beam to lift the thing up into the rafters. Fantastic stuff.
Yeah, everybody's right, but don't forget that THE THING is heavily influenced by ALIEN, the Scott's 1979 movie...ALIEN was the real turning point (better, point of no return) in Sci-fi horror... THE THING is scary, an extraordinary piece of art, but if you think about it...ALIEN was the same...Same suffocating environment (Starship or some base in pole north doesn't matter), same claustrophobia, same monsters (more or less)...Same "alien" trying to kill everyone...Shaping itself inside.
@Ekphrasys Well sorta of Really truthfully Thing was a book entitled "Who Goes There" By John w. Campbell written in 1935. it has the same story as john carpenter's film. with minor differences though. But still the same characters. so more so that book did the influence but i could seem some paranoia in the thing that's very similar to alien. But i would never say the aliens are the same. actually the xenamorph would be just easy prey to the thing.
@snake2006 I'm talking about analogies between the two movies...Who cares the short novel form which it was taken..And THE THING (which is a remake of IT, a '50s sic-fi movie) has many similarities with ALIEN.
@snake2006 Maybe english is not your first language..I said that ALIEN CAME FIRST, because it's a 1979 MOVIE!!! Do you understand??? And alien has many similarities with THE 1982 Carpenter's Movie.....Or vice versa...Doesn't matter...This is not prejudicial towards THE THING which is STILL one of the best SCi-fi movies (better to say Sci-horror movies) of the last 40 years!!
English is my first language, but it's PAINFULLY CLEAR THAT THE MOVIE IS BASED ON THE SHORT STORY WHO GOES THERE? John Carpenter has said so himself. John Carpenter was asked to remake the 1951 film The Thing from Another World. John Carpenter saw that movie as a child and was a big fan of that movie. He was inspired to film making from THAT MOVIE. So shut the fuck up. Alien has similarities to that short story which is OLDER THAN FUCKING ALIEN. It is NOT BASED ON ALIEN. DEAL WITH IT
@snake2006 Not only that, but one of the writers for Alien was a writer for Carpenter's first big film: Dark Star. That writer borrowed several elements from Dark Star when writing Alien. So if anything, Carpenter himself inspired Alien, too.

It is based on the short story.John Carpenter didn't want to remake the 1951 movie. He wanted to make it like the short story originally was since the 1951 Thing had almost nothing to do with the original story. Kinda like every version of I am Legend, not a single one of those movies comes close to following the book, with the Will Smith movie coming the closest but still far. Which pisses me off btw.
@weldonzerom The original film from the 70's, you probably mean. They did a not so good mini-series a few years ago that was a big disappointment. But yeah, that original version was very well done.
@Scoonertuna He was great, but he hasn't had a truly excellent one in a long time, unfortunately. Big Trouble in Little China and They Live were his last really good films.
"HAPPY 29TH BIRTHDAY!" JUNE 25TH 2011 - TODAY IS THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY! TO "THE THING" 1982 BLOCK BUSTER CLASSIC....JOHN CARPENTER'S >THE THING!< LOOK FOR THING-FEST ON FACEBOOK TODAY JUNE 25TH 2011......
The kennel scene was easily the scariest part of the movie. All the other forms of the monster later on got a little too cartoony to be scary. The dog monster was simply that, a bloated dog corpse, twitching but still stationary. *shudders*
the Thing is one of my favourite movies, it is my favourite horror film and Carpenter is defintely my favourite director. Hawk's version is cool to, but this is just genious.
I see everyone's arguing about Species and The Guyver but the way I see it, it doesn't matter whatever else you like. Just as long as you like Carpenter flicks, you have taste, period!
Carpenter broke the barrier of Hollywood's 'what you don't see ethos and went right for the jugular with 'The Thing.' It was also way ahead of its time in terms of what it showed, the fact that the film has 'love or hate' attached to it proves this... but coming from a guy who thinks 'Species' is a good movie, I won't waste any more precious comments!
wat r u talkin about? the Thing was a great movie with a theme of trust that had yet to b discovered and used by directors. it was one of the best movies ive seen.
I thought the effects in the dogs kennel were pretty gruesome and affective

@Ekphrasys Totally agreed. They are two different kinds of aliens, but they were both amazing films and, yeah, similar in many respects.

You do know that the Thing is based on a story that was published back in 1938. The story is called Who Goes There? By John Campbell Jr.
So it is NOT based on Alien.

Alien (1-3), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (78), Carpenter's The Thing are all horror classics, still effective today.
