@MsCoraline5 its actually because the NME Magazine posted a rude comment on their magazine about Ray Toro discussing his weight as well as Gerard & Frank's. Wearing their masks was a way of saying "fuck you, NME" because they were really concerned with how mcr's stage presence was, instead of their talent. Hence, Gerard later accepted an award and said " love your bodies..you are beautiful just the way you are." Hope that helps! :)

Fuck you NME. I became a fan of MCR not because of their looks. When I first saw them, I even said that they're too creepy (helena vid lol) but then I listened to their other songs and I found them unique and amazing. I learned to fucking love this band because of their music; the awesome guitar blends, the vocals, and the fucking lyrics.

So they wore them so you couldn't see their faces, to prove it was "about the music, not the messengers", as Frank said in the interview afterwards when he was asked why they wore balaclavas.
