@trobace It defines that rest in Hebrews chapter 4, you don't enter it b/c of disbelief. The Pharisees were trying to earn their way to heaven by self merits. There is a major difference. The Sabbath rest in Christ as you will read will say to rest "as" He did & because of that also "there continues to be a rest for God's people" it's all there. Do you go to work Saturday or not? We as Christians have to live by the Word of God. Saturday is the Sabbath; but the R.C.C. has gone against what the Word says in the Bible. Sun day is a pagan day stemming from Sun Worship. Constantine did not change force his empire to worship on the sun god day, March 321, because he loved the true. The truth will set you free, following the world and its god will not. The Sabbath is NOT going to Save you. You can keep the Sabbath all you want and still go to HELL. The Sabbath is a Ceremonial Law of WORKS that ended at the Cross. Jesus Christ is our REST now. The early Christians all kept SUNDAY as their day of Worship and that is a FACT.

In Genesis, God sees everything He has made was good. God sanctify(or make it special, but not purify) the 7th day because that He ceased to create. Grace is indeed a gift, howevever Mt 7:22 provides a stern warning that not all of Christ believers will be saved. Jesus clearly rebuffs some christian believers saying that "He never KNEW them". Why did Jesus turn christians away if just believing provides you grace? Grace clearly did not save these people. The bible clearly states in 1 Jn 2:4 that "He that saith, I KNOW him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." Grace is a gift who love Him and KNOW Him.

So if we are to believe the Bible instead of making up our own definitions, it tells that "sin is transgression of the law". 1 John 3:4. See also Rom 3:20. What law is sin the transgression of? The Ten Commandments. Rom 7:7-12, James 2:10-11.
The Lord's Day is His 4th Commandment. If we are idolaters or liars or adulterers, we are sinning, breaking His Commandments, and certainly anything but innocent. By God's grace we are saved (Eph 2:8), but to return to a lifestyle of sin is death.

In the New Covenant, the Lord's day is called "TODAY" (Hebrews4) not seventh day anymore cause He fixed a certain day called it today in Hebrews chapters 3 and 4. According to Scripture, what is it we are "heavy laden" with?
"Ah SINFUL nation, a people LADEN with INIQUITY". Isa 1:4

So Scripture identifies what Jesus tells them they are heavy laden with is SIN! What is sin? Sin is breaking God's law, the Ten Commandments. 1 Jn 3:4, Rom 7:7, James 2:11.
"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29
So part of the rest Jesus offers us is to take away that which we were heavy laden with--our sin! When we repent & confess our sin, He forgives us (1 Jn 1:9), and takes away our pain & guilt. Ps 25:18.
But forgiving us of our heavy laden sin is only PART of what Jesus does for us when He gives us rest. It would be meaningless to forgive us our sin but not give us the means by which to keep away from being heavy laden by returning to a sinful lifestyle:

Those who are Christ's have His Spirit in them (Rom 8:9) and by Christ living inside them are both willing and able--by denying themselves and giving the battle over to Jesus--to keep His Commandments.

Jesus showed His law, His way, is to do good, especially on the Sabbath. That's why Jesus did many of His miracles and healings ON His Sabbath.
The religious leaders had lost sight of this. They operated as though God made this perfect memorial etched out of time, sanctified it, and then thought to Himself "Hey, I have this seventh day, what shall I do with it? I know, I'll make man for My Sabbath!"
But Jesus in Mark 2:27, Mark's penning of this same account, reminds them God made man, the ultimate object of His love, and THEN made the Sabbath FOR man, to be a blessing FOR MAN.
The Scribes & Pharisees, whose hearts were not right before God, saw it differently, they mistook hungry men picking grain and eating it on the Sabbath as working on the Sabbath, and were quick to judge them.
Yet Jesus told those religious leaders that the disciples were "blameless' in this (Matt 12:5), they were not breaking the 4th Commandment, the Lord's Day, by picking grain and eating it on the Sabbath.
The religious leaders, who should have known better, had blinded themselves to the fact that God's law is a law of love (Rom 13:9), which AIM is love & mercy TOWARDS man and God, not towards the Commandment.
If we love Him, we worship Him every day, and always. Acts 5:42.
But Jesus sanctified & blessed only ONE day of the week, a perpetual reminder that He is our both our Creator & Redeemer. Gen 2:2-3, Heb 4:1-11. It is the seventh day of Creation, the Sabbath, the Lord's Day. Gen 2:2-3, Ex 20:8-11, Mk 2:27-28, Rev 1:10.

The Sabbath was give as a sign of the Covenant between God and the Hebrews (Exodus 31:13) a sign to the Covenant of Law to which Moses was mediator. Now deut 6:25 say if they keep ALL the commands they will be deemed Righteous. but we know they where unable to keep them thus making it necessary for a new covenant and a redeemer.

Amen. In his epistle to the Galatians Paul shows how some there had crept in unawares and started teaching CIRCUMCISION, the ceremony from the Book of the Law (Gal 3:10)--the sacrificial law of Moses.
When circumcision was substituted for justification by faith found only in Christ Jesus, the hearing of faith (Gal 3:2) stopped in those who were circumcised because they belied themselves sufficient--that God declared them justified due to their circumcision!
Why should they need to walk by faith (Rom 8:1-4), kill the old man of sin everyday by denying themselves and their sinful carnal desires (Rom 6:6, 1 Cor 15:31, Matt 16:24, Rom 7:15, 8:6) if God already considered them justified because of their circumcision??
We cannot do anything of ourselves to make us just. We have all SINNED--broken His Ten Commandments (1 John 3:4, Rom 7:7, James 2:11) and fall short of His glory. The law condemns us as sinners. It killed us, we are dead to the law. Therefore we all need a Savior by which we can be JUSTIFIED--declared just by the Father. This can ONLY be done through faith in Jesus:
"For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God." Gal 2:19
Now that we have been justified ONLY by faith and saved by His unearned free gift of grace (Eph 2:8), can we return to living a sinful lifestyle of breaking His Ten Commandments, and then claim faith in Him and salvation by His grace?
"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." Rom 3:31
God is very clear about this. God's law, the Ten Commandments (Rom 7:22), are even more in force now, because the Creator died for His creation.
Works do not earn salvation, rather they are an EVIDENCE of salvation through Christ--those who are justified by faith and saved by His grace perform the good works of His law, because the Holy Spirit writes His law in their hearts. Heb 8:10.
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Eph 2:9 God bless.
Regarding Col 2:14-17, please note that Paul's subject is the meat & drink new moon ceremonial sabbath ORDINANCES (v14) of the Book of the Law, the sacrificial ceremonial Law of Moses. See Leviticus ch 23.
These sacrificial offering ceremonial ORDINANCES were shadows (Heb 10:1), they pointed forward to Christ's sacrifice for sin. This is why they are abolished--Christ abolished them at the Cross by becoming sin for us and paying our death penalty with His perfect life!

Therefore, This means it is also ceremonial law. the whole term used refers to festivals and new moons and Sabbaths.. I am going to provide you a commentary on Colossians2:16-17. @belojo2003 #5 Also, the lack of a definite article in the original Greek also does not prevent the word "sabbaton" from being translated as the 7th day Sabbath. Matt 28:1, John 5:9, 5:10 and 5:16 all use the same term without the definite article, and all of them DO mean the 7th day Sabbath.
In the original Greek, the word used by Matthew in Matt 28:1 is the SAME plural Greek word SABBATON used by Paul in Col 2:16.

And if you look at what each subsection in the phrase means, you see that festivals are the yearly holy days (Passover, Pentecost, Yom Kippur, Trumpets, etc), the new moons are the monthly observance of the new moon, and the Sabbath is the only thing left - exactly what the word meant in the language of the time - the 7th day of the week.

@belojo2003, 1) The Sabbath was given to man before Adam sinned (Genesis 2:2-3), 2) It is the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:8-11), and the ten commandments, also called by God His testimony, are kept in the ark of the testament (Exodus 25:2; 31:18; 32:15). Again, look at Revelation 11:19 (written by John the apostle after Jesus was resurrected). It is clear that there is an ark of God's testament in heaven.

I think the best study of what GOD meant to do on the 7th day of the week is in Exodus 16:28-30. Also if one would do a word study on the word "rest" Hebrew word # 7673=shabath they would see that GOD meant for them to stay/abide in their homes that day to rest, to keep as a day of rest. God gave the Israelites the gospel in the form of these sabbaths/feats or holidays: Passover, Unleavened bread, Firstfruits, Trumpets, Atonement, pentacost and etc. The 7th day and 7th years sabbath teach a biblical principle of eternal rest--God's rest. Jesus made this clear when He said that whoever is weary and burden should go to find rest in him. This is God's rest--the rest God entered after creation.

You may understand from the english translation that the 10 commandments were written with the finger of God. The Jewish understand they written with the finger of angel (Acts 7:53, Galatians 3:19).

@trobace It defines that rest in Hebrews chapter 4, you don't enter it b/c of disbelief. The Pharisees were trying to earn their way to heaven by self merits. There is a major difference. The Sabbath rest in Christ as you will read will say to rest "as" He did & because of that also "there continues to be a rest for God's people" it's all there. Do you go to work Saturday or not? We as Christians have to live by the Word of God. Saturday is the Sabbath; but the R.C.C. has gone against what the Word says in the Bible. Sun day is a pagan day stemming from Sun Worship. In Genesis, God sees everything He has made was good. God sanctify(or make it special, but not purify) the 7th day because that He ceased to create. Grace is indeed a gift, howevever Mt 7:22 provides a stern warning that not all of Christ believers will be saved. Jesus clearly rebuffs some christian believers saying that "He never KNEW them". Why did Jesus turn christians away if just believing provides you grace? Grace clearly did not save these people. The bible clearly states in 1 Jn 2:4 that "He that saith, I KNOW him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." Grace is a gift who love Him and KNOW Him.

So if we are to believe the Bible instead of making up our own definitions, it tells that "sin is transgression of the law". 1 John 3:4. See also Rom 3:20. What law is sin the transgression of? The Ten Commandments. Rom 7:7-12, James 2:10-11.
The Lord's Day is His 4th Commandment. If we are idolaters or liars or adulterers, we are sinning, breaking His Commandments, and certainly anything but innocent. By God's grace we are saved (Eph 2:8), but to return to a lifestyle of sin is death.

In the New Covenant, the Lord's day is called "TODAY" (Hebrews4) not seventh day anymore cause He fixed a certain day called it today in Hebrews chapters 3 and 4. Where in the New Testament, you read the disciple or Christ command us to keep the Sabbath "Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy". We have recommendation for all other 9 commandments in the N.T, but none for Sabbath. it is because Christ is our Sabbath, we rest in him (Mat11:28-29)

Jesus showed His law, His way, is to do good, especially on the Sabbath. That's why Jesus did many of His miracles and healings ON His Sabbath.
The religious leaders had lost sight of this. They operated as though God made this perfect memorial etched out of time, sanctified it, and then thought to Himself "Hey, I have this seventh day, what shall I do with it? I know, I'll make man for My Sabbath!"

The Scribes & Pharisees, whose hearts were not right before God, saw it differently, they mistook hungry men picking grain and eating it on the Sabbath as working on the Sabbath, and were quick to judge them.

But Jesus sanctified & blessed only ONE day of the week, a perpetual reminder that He is our both our Creator & Redeemer. Gen 2:2-3, Heb 4:1-11. It is the seventh day of Creation, the Sabbath, the Lord's Day. Gen 2:2-3, Ex 20:8-11, Mk 2:27-28, Rev 1:10.
That Day only He gives His name to, in which He set apart for holy use-- for us, as a blessing--for us, to spend holy time devoted to Him & our fellow man, to do good.

Jesus says the Sabbath was made FOR man, He didn't make man to be for the Sabbath.

You said Mark 2:27-28 states "Jesus will be Lord Eternally". While Jesus & His Kingdom will be eternal (Luke 1:33), verses 27 & 28 say nothing of that. See the problem?

Jesus says it is His. He is our Maker, and that Day shows Him as Creator of heaven & earth, the seas and all that is in them. Ex 20:11.

We cannot do anything of ourselves to make us just. We have all SINNED--broken His Ten Commandments (1 John 3:4, Rom 7:7, James 2:11) and fall short of His glory. The law condemns us as sinners. It killed us, we are dead to the law. Therefore we all need a Savior by which we can be JUSTIFIED--declared just by the Father. This can ONLY be done through faith in Jesus:
"For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God." Gal 2:19

Works do not earn salvation, rather they are an EVIDENCE of salvation through Christ--those who are justified by faith and saved by His grace perform the good works of His law, because the Holy Spirit writes His law in their hearts. Heb 8:10.

Regarding Col 2:14-17, please note that Paul's subject is the meat & drink new moon ceremonial sabbath ORDINANCES (v14) of the Book of the Law, the sacrificial ceremonial Law of Moses. See Leviticus ch 23.
These sacrificial offering ceremonial ORDINANCES were shadows (Heb 10:1), they pointed forward to Christ's sacrifice for sin. This is why they are abolished--Christ abolished them at the Cross by becoming sin for us and paying our death penalty with His perfect life!

@belojo2003 #5 Also, the lack of a definite article in the original Greek also does not prevent the word "sabbaton" from being translated as the 7th day Sabbath. Matt 28:1, John 5:9, 5:10 and 5:16 all use the same term without the definite article, and all of them DO mean the 7th day Sabbath.
In the original Greek, the word used by Matthew in Matt 28:1 is the SAME plural Greek word SABBATON used by Paul in Col 2:16.

And if you look at what each subsection in the phrase means, you see that festivals are the yearly holy days (Passover, Pentecost, Yom Kippur, Trumpets, etc), the new moons are the monthly observance of the new moon, and the Sabbath is the only thing left - exactly what the word meant in the language of the time - the 7th day of the week.

@Nirky #6 In the original Greek, the word used by Luke in Matt 4:16 is the SAME plural Greek word SABBATON used by Paul in Col 2:16.
Therefore, SABBATON in Col 2:16 is to be seen in the same light as SABBATON in Matt 28:1 and Luke 4:16 - as a singular.
See also the Septuagint, the version of the Old Testament the Apostles quoted from, Exodus 20:8 and Leviticus 23:37-38.
I would like to know from you how you interpret each of those three types of day mentioned in Col 2:16

Based on BOTH grammar and language meaning on the one hand, AND parallel biblical examples on the other, we see that the only logical interpretation of this text is to accept that the weekly Sabbath is indeed listed as one of the precepts of the Old Covenant now nailed to the cross.

@Nirky #8 So far, all I can see is that Paul DID mean to refer to the 7th day Sabbath, so we should accept that instead of fighting it. Often, I know, that is hard, because we are brought up in a certain way, and it's human nature to resist change. But take a careful look at the New Testament, and if you really can find references to the Sabbath being necessary, to the Sabbath being kept by Christians, I'd love to hear them - I cannot find any.

@belojo2003, 1) The Sabbath was given to man before Adam sinned (Genesis 2:2-3), 2) It is the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:8-11), and the ten commandments, also called by God His testimony, are kept in the ark of the testament (Exodus 25:2; 31:18; 32:15). Again, look at Revelation 11:19 (written by John the apostle after Jesus was resurrected). It is clear that there is an ark of God's testament in heaven.

Thus the 7th day Sabbath was given on the last day of the creation week, is one of the ten commandments, the commandments being so important that they are kept in the temple of God in heaven. The 7th day Sabbath will be kept in the earth made new because God's law is eternal. Christ died to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). To break the 7th day Sabbath is a sin which Christ came to save us from.

This is why in Revelation 22:14 the Bible makes it clear that only those that keep God's commandments have right to enter the city of God and to partake of the tree of life. This is not righteousness by works (in your own strength trying to keep the law) but righteousness by faith (by faith allowing the life of Christ to be imparted in you, and developed in you, by His Holy Spirit, through Spirit empowered obedience to His Word). Jesus came as our example, and He kept the Sabbath (Luke 4:16).

I think the best study of what GOD meant to do on the 7th day of the week is in Exodus 16:28-30. Also if one would do a word study on the word "rest" Hebrew word # 7673=shabath they would see that GOD meant for them to stay/abide in their homes that day to rest, to keep as a day of rest. GOD gave them manna for 2 days on the 6th day so they would'nt even have to go out and gather any on the 7th day. GOD ask Moses why do they refuse to keep commandments/laws. Peace2All

The "first day" in Ex 12:16 is not a day of the week but is the first day of seven Days of Unleavened Bread, one of the ceremonial sacrificial sabbaths of Lev 23 (Ex 12:14-15, Col 2:14-17), the first and seventh days of which were sabbaths (v16).
Days of Unleavened Bread was an annual feast, beginning on the 14th day of the first month of the Jewish calendar (Ex 12:18).
In contrast, only the seventh Day of the week is called the Lord's Day, His Sabbath (Mk 2:27-28, Rev 1:10).

God gave the Israelites the gospel in the form of these sabbaths/feats or holidays: Passover, Unleavened bread, Firstfruits, Trumpets, Atonement, pentacost and etc. The 7th day and 7th years sabbath teach a biblical principle of eternal rest--God's rest. Jesus made this clear when He said that whoever is weary and burden should go to find rest in him. This is God's rest--the rest God entered after creation.
