The mess in the US was created by the Clinton passing bank deregulation and affirmative action lending rules for people with basically no ability to ever pay for a house. The mess in the US was created by the Clinton passing bank deregulation and affirmative action lending rules for people with basically no ability to ever pay for a house. It created the perfect storm. Combine this with FASB 157 accounting rules requiring the value of assets to be written to what they can be sold for basically on the spot, even if meant to be held for 30 years, it's created a total lockup of liquidity in the credit markets globally.

Despite Conservative attempts to brand him weak, Stephane Dion is a respectable intellectual man who would make a good Prime Minister for Canada right now. Harper has burned through the surplus left by the Martin government, and we're looking at a deficit soon. A Liberal government with enough NDP and Greens would be perfect. Bush is on his way out, Howard is out in Australia, it's time Canada got rid of Harper too.

I'm sorry, but Harper has had his chance. He's been Prime Minister for long enough now and has shown very little. He broke his own law to call this snap election in a bid to gain seats, only to slide down in the polls. His ministers quitting or being fired, making jokes about Canadians dying, stealing a speech from Howard, no plan or idea about what to do with the sinking economy. I agree we don't need elections every couple years, and if not for Harper, we wouldn't be in one right now.

Reccession is a natural part of the economy, has happened before, and will happen again, no matter who is PM; and Harper has said that there will be trouble, but that we'll get through it, unlike the liberals who say that everything will be fine.
