I will try to put this in a simple way. Sarah Palin is bad at interviews, bad at answering what someone elses platform is, bad at debating. Yet, she is the most popular US governor. Hmmm I wonder why?

The Debate itself didn't change the number for the most part. It happened and most likely will fade into the background. This was more of a victory for the Republicans based on the fact that so little was expected from Palin. I like at the debate like a job interview- even though Palin may come off more likeable Biden presented himself as someone that can do the job.

BTW, you can dress a cat up in a cute pink dress and teach it "smart" moves and illusion of a deeper intelligence...BUT ITS STILL A CAT IN A DRESS! I think Palin did much better than expected by everyone because her intelligence "in politics at least" is SOO low its baffling. Everything till now has shown she knows jack & shit. Someone hit the books & had smart folks training her for this to cloak some truth.

Palin had been well coached... and you could see it was just down to coaching. It is not so much that she did well - it was that she did better then we expected her to do - but still not well enought.
Five words, even! Boy am I tired. I didn't get to bed until 6am. Put out a REGISTER TO VOTE shout? This is going to be a close one and the Repubs have killed the celebrity endorsement and Rock The Vote Thing. Ordinary vloggers need to be shouting it out. NOW!!! : - )
I didn't think Palin did well at all. She looked cute and was articulate but I don't want a President or Vice President who compares the affairs of state to a PTA meeting.
Pop across to this month's RollingStone magazine and read Make-Believe Maverick. Hard to believe that McCain will survive it but I remember Bush surviving similar by saying he was a reformed hell raiser. Heck, people even warmed to him for it. Assuming even a fraction of what is in the article is true, McCain would have a much harder rebuttal job.
Liked your piece but the Palin vs Palin angle, have the US media sunk that low?
Have people taken leave of their senses? This debate was Palin against Palin? That Palin was even on the same stage was hugely embarrassing. She almost managed good debating school parrot but only almost.
If the 'debate' showed anything it's that Biden should be running against McCain. Obama has it all to do on Tuesday. If McCain's intention was to show Palin and Obama in the same light with he, McCain, as the man of letters, it failed.
She could call him 'Joe' & he had 2 NOT call her 'Sarah'? Sounds pretty equal 2 me, u betcha! Scoring this a tie, based on her ability 2 NOT throw up, faint or give deer-in-headlights look, also means the set bar was NOT equal. Yeah! moments 4 me = substance/depth-contained; 'nah' ones = surface charm/personality winky-cute smiley scripted almost over-acted deliveries. It's NOT a beauty contest/American Idol show, wherein 1 destroys US balance of power. Palin=DANGER a big fat NAAH! moment!
It sounded pretty funny when Joe Biden said "Bush's" when he was doing that repetitive statement. When Sarah Palin was talking about how we would have to pass freedom down to our children, and our children's children, maybe Sarah might have to pass it down to her children's children's children! Overall, I think Biden did a better job tying John McCain to George Bush than Obama did on Friday.
I am still undecided to this day. I don't understand why Obama chose Biden as a running mate.....especially when his platform is all about change. His past relationships also worry me. I am also not real excited about McCain. Maybe I will sit this election out. I really don't believe Biden's comment about this being THE most important election of our lives.....please. Anyway nice vid.....I'm a new subscriber...enjoyed your discourse on the debate.
LOL Julia,"I got other bookshelves." Joe,"woooah." I like your friend Julia, Joe. Great addition to your message!! Hope to see her more.
The Palin we saw with Katie was diff. from the Palin we saw in the debate, by design I believe. It was a good move. From the dim-witt that can't put a sentence together to the woman who went against "the Biden" fearlessly. It creates an illusion, an OMG we were wrong about her, image. We were duped. Who dupes better than a republican? NO ONE!
OK here is how i see this debate. one i'm glad that Palin wasn't a complete idiot. as a woman i've been embarassed by her interview performances. BUT i still do not see her and mccain offering anything good for the american people. i also do not like being quantified as a 'hockey mom' or 'joe six-pack.' stop trying to focus group/categorize me and just tell me so you can adjust you message to what you think i want to hear. just tell me the truth.
I agree knibbles, too much credit is being given to Palin just because she didnt bomb. Looks like intense debate preperation, notes, and memerization of items by the GOP paid off. But she still seems incompetent she didnt answer with any substance whatsoever and her party should be exerting volumes of substanance since they've been in the white house for 8 years and things are pretty screwed up on all fronts. The Biden-Obama ticket won this one easily.
Wow. You guys are really scaring me with that bounciness and perkiness :) however, I'm glad you care even a little bit about which candidate seemed like they could actually do the job and all. Especially since Palin was as perky as you are, and I have to believe that swayed you regardless of her incompetence :)
Are you both on drugs? That woman survived, but she still ridiculed herself, although admittedly less than with Katie. What she did in that debate was to repeat memorized talking points, make broad promises and accusations, avoid answering questions repeat herself when corrected and act in a fake folksy manner.
Wow, I think you both give Palin too much credit. I mean, come on! She couldn't answer a single question of substance, she couldn't defend McCain's positions... The American people have seen where "folksy" gets us in George Bush. I think most of us have had more than enough of folksy.
Hey Joe- What did you think about Joe Biden's BS about deregulation? He totally blamed whats going on right now on it- and used that to slam McCain on his being for deregulation in wallstreet. I know you had to see that for the BS it was- you even did a video on it. Franny May and Fredy MAc (whatever it's called) is not a private enterprise. The Govt. forced them to buy loans and gave the banks a rug to sweep everything under. Todays problem is not because of a free economy- its Govt. Meddling.
Ah, but my belief is that F&F failed to correct a problem that started in the free market. Specifically, that the sub in sub-prime lending got a whole lot subber.
F&F's continued purchasing of many (not most) of them after they went bad was an enabler, but not the cause.
Hey if Palin can say this I can too: I want an all of the above solution.
Today banks shop around for the independent company that'll give their securities the highest ratings. Conflict of interest; needs regulation.
F&F was the problem. They were required to buy bad loans. They took away the natural accountability that banks face in a free market- and allowed them to use F&F as a rug to sweep their mess under. F&F didn't have the option to correct the problem- they were told to keep buying the loans knowing they were bad. Can you honestly say we are in this mess today if F&F aren't forced to buy bad loans? Banks wouldn't have given them if F&F wasn't there to buy them right after.
I agree with most of what you're saying except the implication that that describes the whole problem. I read somewhere that F&F bought 40% of the subprimes. If they were the only bad actor the consequences wouldn't be so global.
Also your scapegoating of the banks' patently horrible lending standards simply because they knew there were suckers out there who would buy them, is both an undeserved amount of deference and doesn't bode well for a free-market-will-police-itself viewpoint.
I didn't know F&F only bought up 40%- something to look into.
I am not saying that the bankers didn't play a scum bag move. But thats the whole driving force behind capitalism. You can't expect them to follow an honor system- it is a profit driven system- the only thing that holds it in check is it's potential to make profit. F&F gave banks the ability to make money doing something a free market would never have allowed them to do.
You can't blame (or cant be surprised at) a capitalistic entity for making money in whatever way it sees the most, or easiest, profit. It's like being pissed a scorpion for stinging you.
But the scorpion doesn't sting anything it isn't supposed to sting if you leave it alone. Govt. hands off the market system, and it will govern itself. All the problems come from attempts to meddle.
Curious, do you know of any major economic failures thats occurred independently from Govt. Tinkering?
Yay for smart friends! Hey Joe, maybe if you have the time (and even a small bit of interest) you should check out the Canadian prime ministerial debate that happened last night at the same time and maybe comment on the differences and similarities. I watched both and thought comparing the two was really interesting, even more so than just each on its own. You can find a clip of it here: watch?v=ebxSe7pVjWM
The other thing I wanted to mention was, when Palin spoke, it came across like she was an anchor woman on the news. Whereas Joe Biden came across very focused and knowledgeable and better equipped to take on a leadership role in solving the problems. Palin came off as someone commentating on events going on out there and not someone who brings specific solutions or skills, other than being an oversee-er of energy supply.
Say it ain't so Joe, there ya go pointing yer finger to the past. Gov. Palin's interview with Couric, according to Palin, was gotcha journalism at its best. Whereas that Couric would have Americans believe it was a simple question. 8^) Palin, on some level, set the bar so low in that interview, that viewer's expectations of her in the debates couldn't go anywhere but up. BTW: as a pundit, I never apologize - but you probably knew that. ... I'M KIDDING! I apologize ... sometimes.
Great commentary. I cringed through most of the debate. Biden won. Palin was too folksy and simple for the current situation in the world. I wanted Barack to pick Biden as running mate, and I'm glad he did.
I liked Julia. For several reasons-all honorable. It's none of my business, but is this your new roomate you have spoken about in your previous videos?
Palin brought her image up a notch but still dipped and dodged almost all of the real issues. I was shocked to hear her same sex union stance and I have to wonder if it will waver over the next few days. Over all I do not think she helped or hurt the Republicans in this debate.
Palin hid behind her ignorance with a mask of Anti-Wall Street. Acting as one of us instead of your average politician gave her an escape from answering or sticking to the real questions asked. Biden did a great job at sticking to the target questions and pulling punches on the new to the game Palin. I am sure all of this was not out of charity but to avoid looking like bullies. All and all I think Biden played a great game last night.
Oh, and Julia was great! And going back to what she said about Biden's little emotional stand, I felt genuinely moved. Well he had to do something; he couldn't let Palin have all the hearts and minds!
Palin had clearly done her homework, there was a quote from her sister who said something along the lines of, 'it's been like studying for the biggest test ever'. This was a big difference for me. Joe Biden was smooth, calm and collected, the elder statesman who could tap into 35+ years of experience, both good and bad, and didn't rely on a few weeks of test cramming. Please to see Biden also being very respectful, even gentlemanly, if that counts for anything.
maybe true that you both are but...its a bit cocky
was going to say arrogant but its probly true xD
also she is very pretty ^_^
this comment only has a sideveiw input because i cant comment on what you said as you said it all :p also i am english so...this debate doesnt affect me :P i like that you americans get more into your government than us brits tho >_> i actually know more about yours than mine LOL
But Daniel, this debate really does affect you too! :) Like you, I live in England, and the election influenced by these debates has huge implications for us too; for our economy, for our troops sent to fight around the world, for an awful lot! I understand though, our politics and our politicians aren't presented in such an orchestrated or immediately engaging way as we have seen from this election campaign in the States.
Sorry, but Sarah just drove me nuts with the sound of her voice and total vagueness in her answers. The sound of nails scratched against a chalkboard sounds like beautiful music compared to her. I had to take two aspirin after the debate for my big headache.
joe,joe biden won yesterday. he is obviously more intelligent, shrewd and experienced. therefore, a better VP pick than palin. i thought palin was just an answering machine.
I completely agree with both of you. I think the focus was more on Palin during the debate obviously because people wanted to see what shed say and in the emotional aspect I think she did beat Biden. But she did get facts wrong which im not to pleased about like the Leader of Afganistan and the General she mentioned. I think she mentioned a civil war general instead of a living general know idk the name. But Biden cleary had the factual part won. Vote Obama!
Julia did a nice job. She didn't like looking at the camera though. Thats fine, because when she spoke I agreed with her. Great video. I think both Biden and Palin did a great job and both were very respectful. This was actually a pretty class debate. I agree with you that Biden won it.
I didn't like the debate at all. I didn't like the setup, I didn't like the moderator and I didn't like the questions asked. There was nothing new asked thus both candidates were able to stick to their talking points. I knew that Palin would do well. I was prepared for that. But I was not prepared for a setup that would allow her to ignore all of the "hard" questions and transform this debate around what she wanted to be said.I wanted them both to be challenged and that didn't happen last night.
joe, I'm with a few others in wanting you to remain a lone entity on your videos. I listened to the whole debate while playing WoW and one of my fellow player announced (out of the blue) "palin's getting owned"
with the follow up "she's uneducated".
only hardcore republicans will say palin truimphed in this debate. palin kept her ignorance to a minimum, but surely that isn't enough to win a debate (especially one of this stature).
2 pts. Palin missed, imho, raising taxes on people that make over 250K would hurt the middle class by having to pay more for goods and services. Rich people are shrewed and will pass any additional taxes down by paying employees less, laying off workers, and raising prices. 2nd, pulling out of Iraq before victory would be like stopping taking antibiotic when you have an infection. It will come back, madder than before. Abandoning Iraq too soon will breed more hate towards USA.
Well I haven't been watching long enough to know if Julia's addition is a good or bad thing. I can say that I did enjoy this particular video. And by the way, that was a very impressive bookshelf.
Julia seems like a great, smart person, but I've got to say, I like it a lot better when it's just you talking. You tend to get on a roll, and it's just amazing. Maybe for a few other videos, but please don't make her a regular.
Julia is a great addition. Bring her back. She doesn't need to do videos herself if she appears on yours. I don't do any videos myself because I can't think of any good ideas, so I sympathize with that. I think this debate will definitely help Obama get elected.
off-topic: you really showed stereotypical gender roles. She talked about the emotional apeal, Joe, you talked about who won the debate judging on facts... ^^
How did she do well? She kept going back to talking about energy, and reminding everyone again and again and AGAIN that Alaska is an energy producing state.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Joe,
Did you catch when Biden, well, lied about Obama's line about sitting down with the leader of Iran.
-----
Biden- "He did not say sit down with Ahmadinejad."
Q- Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran,...Sy,NK Vez?
I don't want a vice president who studies for a debate, I want a vice president who goes into a debate with knowledge he or she already has on this country and politics in general.
I agree with most of everything said by both of you in this video. I was disappointed that Palin let Biden get away with his lowering taxes on middle classes, criticizing McCain for taxing corporations gobbledygook. I can't believe they get away with telling people that they are only going to take the water out of one side of a bucket.
It amused me that Biden feels it is unpatriotic to not pay excessive taxes. I think a few people are spinning in graves heh
I know most of the comments on here are mostly politically oriented...
...but I must say that I love your hair! I don't know who would criticize your appearance...you're so, Audrey Hepburn meets Hillary Clinton meets Halle Berry meets Amy Poehler. It works for you.
I'd say Sarah Palin did a decent job, but thats only because our standards were so low for her. If they were normal we probably wouldn't be thinking she did so good. But overall I think Biden did better because he gave more facts and specifics. Mc- Er Palin (she totally echoed every stance he took in the presidential debate.)was very vague in several different instances and did not elaborate on just how Mccain was going to accomplish these great things he promised.
Biden totally flop-flopped on the same sex issues topic, but he nailed Palin with the deregulation remark! Both VPs took some hard blows tonight but had equally smooth comebacks. :) I'm still a McCain/Palin supporter for reasons that weren't touched on this time, but it was an interesting debate to say the least. I do wish they hadn't averted the questions as much but that's normal & to be expected. I'm looking forward to the upcoming debates. Great vid. *thumbs up*

Palin did not meet the Commander in Chief threshold.
It is that simple. She is a national joke and the debate did not change that.
If McCain was not 100 years old it might not matter...but these are difficult times.
Obama-Biden Any other choice is just Un-American

I didn't think Palin did well at all. She looked cute and was articulate but I don't want a President or Vice President who compares the affairs of state to a PTA meeting.

Ran out of space, that wasn't five letters.
OnceAPunAThyme 3 years ago
Have people taken leave of their senses? This debate was Palin against Palin? That Palin was even on the same stage was hugely embarrassing. She almost managed good debating school parrot but only almost.
If the 'debate' showed anything it's that Biden should be running against McCain. Obama has it all to do on Tuesday. If McCain's intention was to show Palin and Obama in the same light with he, McCain, as the man of letters, it failed.
Five words for McCain. Rolling Stone Oct08.
OnceAPunAThyme 3 years ago

BUT i still do not see her and mccain offering anything good for the american people. i also do not like being quantified as a 'hockey mom' or 'joe six-pack.' stop trying to focus group/categorize me and just tell me so you can adjust you message to what you think i want to hear. just tell me the truth.
moorcll 3 years ago
I agree knibbles, too much credit is being given to Palin just because she didnt bomb. Looks like intense debate preperation, notes, and memerization of items by the GOP paid off. But she still seems incompetent she didnt answer with any substance whatsoever and her party should be exerting volumes of substanance since they've been in the white house for 8 years and things are pretty screwed up on all fronts. The Biden-Obama ticket won this one easily.
Lawlow1978 3 years ago
Wow. You guys are really scaring me with that bounciness and perkiness :) however, I'm glad you care even a little bit about which candidate seemed like they could actually do the job and all. Especially since Palin was as perky as you are, and I have to believe that swayed you regardless of her incompetence :)
jinxtigr 3 years ago
I wasn't swayed at all. I think Biden clearly won the debate.
juliamaynot 3 years ago
Are you both on drugs? That woman survived, but she still ridiculed herself, although admittedly less than with Katie. What she did in that debate was to repeat memorized talking points, make broad promises and accusations, avoid answering questions repeat herself when corrected and act in a fake folksy manner.
BottomContributor 3 years ago
Wow, I think you both give Palin too much credit. I mean, come on! She couldn't answer a single question of substance, she couldn't defend McCain's positions... The American people have seen where "folksy" gets us in George Bush. I think most of us have had more than enough of folksy.
knibbles1882 3 years ago
Hey Joe- What did you think about Joe Biden's BS about deregulation? He totally blamed whats going on right now on it- and used that to slam McCain on his being for deregulation in wallstreet. I know you had to see that for the BS it was- you even did a video on it. Franny May and Fredy MAc (whatever it's called) is not a private enterprise. The Govt. forced them to buy loans and gave the banks a rug to sweep everything under. Todays problem is not because of a free economy- its Govt. Meddling.
usnationalist 3 years ago
Ah, but my belief is that F&F failed to correct a problem that started in the free market. Specifically, that the sub in sub-prime lending got a whole lot subber.
F&F's continued purchasing of many (not most) of them after they went bad was an enabler, but not the cause.
Hey if Palin can say this I can too: I want an all of the above solution.
Today banks shop around for the independent company that'll give their securities the highest ratings. Conflict of interest; needs regulation.
JoeFelice 3 years ago
F&F was the problem. They were required to buy bad loans. They took away the natural accountability that banks face in a free market- and allowed them to use F&F as a rug to sweep their mess under. F&F didn't have the option to correct the problem- they were told to keep buying the loans knowing they were bad. Can you honestly say we are in this mess today if F&F aren't forced to buy bad loans? Banks wouldn't have given them if F&F wasn't there to buy them right after.
usnationalist 3 years ago
I agree with most of what you're saying except the implication that that describes the whole problem. I read somewhere that F&F bought 40% of the subprimes. If they were the only bad actor the consequences wouldn't be so global.
Also your scapegoating of the banks' patently horrible lending standards simply because they knew there were suckers out there who would buy them, is both an undeserved amount of deference and doesn't bode well for a free-market-will-police-itself viewpoint.
JoeFelice 3 years ago
I didn't know F&F only bought up 40%- something to look into.
I am not saying that the bankers didn't play a scum bag move. But thats the whole driving force behind capitalism. You can't expect them to follow an honor system- it is a profit driven system- the only thing that holds it in check is it's potential to make profit. F&F gave banks the ability to make money doing something a free market would never have allowed them to do.
usnationalist 3 years ago
You can't blame (or cant be surprised at) a capitalistic entity for making money in whatever way it sees the most, or easiest, profit. It's like being pissed a scorpion for stinging you.
usnationalist 3 years ago
Totally agree. AND That's a mantra of the pro-regulation side.
JoeFelice 3 years ago
But the scorpion doesn't sting anything it isn't supposed to sting if you leave it alone. Govt. hands off the market system, and it will govern itself. All the problems come from attempts to meddle.
Curious, do you know of any major economic failures thats occurred independently from Govt. Tinkering?
usnationalist 3 years ago
Do you know of any major economies like that?

jillenium00 3 years ago

I apologize ... sometimes.
gabriellebirchak 3 years ago
Great commentary. I cringed through most of the debate. Biden won. Palin was too folksy and simple for the current situation in the world. I wanted Barack to pick Biden as running mate, and I'm glad he did.

Palin brought her image up a notch but still dipped and dodged almost all of the real issues. I was shocked to hear her same sex union stance and I have to wonder if it will waver over the next few days. Over all I do not think she helped or hurt the Republicans in this debate.
combustication07 3 years ago
Palin hid behind her ignorance with a mask of Anti-Wall Street. Acting as one of us instead of your average politician gave her an escape from answering or sticking to the real questions asked. Biden did a great job at sticking to the target questions and pulling punches on the new to the game Palin. I am sure all of this was not out of charity but to avoid looking like bullies. All and all I think Biden played a great game last night.

almubeeb 3 years ago
Palin had clearly done her homework, there was a quote from her sister who said something along the lines of, 'it's been like studying for the biggest test ever'. This was a big difference for me. Joe Biden was smooth, calm and collected, the elder statesman who could tap into 35+ years of experience, both good and bad, and didn't rely on a few weeks of test cramming. Please to see Biden also being very respectful, even gentlemanly, if that counts for anything.

Vote Obama!

Silentbutdeadly07 3 years ago
joe, I'm with a few others in wanting you to remain a lone entity on your videos.

Joe,
Did you catch when Biden, well, lied about Obama's line about sitting down with the leader of Iran.

Biden- "He did not say sit down with Ahmadinejad."
Q- Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran,...Sy,NK Vez?

I agree with most of everything said by both of you in this video. I was disappointed that Palin let Biden get away with his lowering taxes on middle classes, criticizing McCain for taxing corporations gobbledygook. I can't believe they get away with telling people that they are only going to take the water out of one side of a bucket.
It amused me that Biden feels it is unpatriotic to not pay excessive taxes. I think a few people are spinning in graves heh

Sslivers1 3 years ago
Biden totally flop-flopped on the same sex issues topic, but he nailed Palin with the deregulation remark! Both VPs took some hard blows tonight but had equally smooth comebacks. :) I'm still a McCain/Palin supporter for reasons that weren't touched on this time, but it was an interesting debate to say the least. I do wish they hadn't averted the questions as much but that's normal & to be expected. I'm looking forward to the upcoming debates. Great vid. *thumbs up*
