YES, a top 10 fav of mine from that summer of love 1967. I have to agree, from a musical point, that horn is wayyyyyyyyyy out of place here. When he tried to dupe the hammond lead-it grated my eardrums. God, it sounds a little like a lead Kazooo.
Did the guy think this was a jazz improve song or was he trying to get the 'snake to rise' out of some off camera basket ! I met Gary & the group in fall of '68-they were main act & Sly & the Family Stone opened for them in PSYCHEDELIC Supermarket(
Gary Brooker ..... right up there with Brahms, Bach and Beethoven....
This specific song ... with Frank Mead on soprano sax ..was nothing short of brilliant! Creative artists and musicians alike ....share in this rendition of excellence. Hats off to you Frank Mead ...
There are some songs that you really can't mess around with the original arrangement, and this is one. Yes they are all great musicians but this is not a patch on what it should sound like. Check out the vid of them live at "union chapel" - that's what it should sound like !
A great version, although when the sax entered, I though a baby was crying, but the great Frank Mead reedemed himself with a wonderful solo! [ Yes, I realize how difficult it is to intone a soprano sax...]
@YOU2UUB Terrible song? I'd say the only thing bad about the performance was the soprano sax that was too loud. Gary's still a good singer after all these years.
Call me a sentimental old fool with an inability to move on......? but!! the icing on the cake would be Matthew Fisher playing the piece for the organ (arguably the song's soul) that he composed.
screw the Rock and Roll hall of Fame and those that leave out bands like procol Harem, the moody Blues, Styx, Journey, Kansas and so many others, its sad, such loosers you are!
One of the greatest songs ever written. It has the rare quality that you can't get sick of it. In fact, the more you listen to it, the more you like it. For decades.
Yesterday, I watched this concert (Eric Clapton & Friends) on TV - this is one of my favorite rock song, beautiful!!! Actually, my sister used to listen so I did. Got me tearful and made me feel so nostalgic.
@ohrofax Gary Brooker and Mathew Fisher have been argueing for years over the composition credits and royalty rights to this song. They are not what you could describe as the best of friends.
Its an unfortunate consequence following the creation of such a beautiful song
What a shame that the sax is not at all in tune with the rest of the ensemble. Otherwise, it's neat to see this song performed forty-three years later.
The first of the "Concert By The Lake " series had Eric Clapton playing a fantastic guitar solo to this very song backed by Steve Winwood on organ. Any DVD or CD of the that concert?
@TomPlanteh That's way cool. Paul Carrack is so talented--I just hope if he's still (on tour)with Gary Brooker. he gets a chance to play some of his great songs too. ;-)
What a voice, What a voice !!!! Brings back some great memories. Take that sax out of there.!!!! The sax isn't in tune !!Thanks Gary for all of the music you gave us..........
Весь этот концерт чудесный!!!

Gary may be older; but he still sounds great. Life's ups and downs have added a measure of truth to this rendition; excellant.
