As if American didn't look lazy enough someone had to invent a bike where you don't even have to shift gears??? This is too much it takes the fun out of riding a bike. When you're on a bike you're supposed to be like a free spirit, not held back by anything with the ability yo do whatever you want but if you take a bike and make it so you can't be free and you have the bike shifting for you than it ruins the whole idea. And really shifting gears is not that complicated.
The bicycle that I ride was pulled out of a scrap metal trash heap and cost maybe $13 to fix up. Yes, it took about 30 hours of cleaning, removing the rust, repacking the bearings, all that, but there is absolutely no need to spend a great deal of money for a bike, and certainly no need to have automatic shifting, disc breaks, spring or shock mounted seats or tires or any of that.
A good, clean, fresh bicycle is a basic bike, one that doesn't have a bunch of un-needed crap bolted on to it.
@NotSoOldHippy That's great that you are able to re-furbish an old bike and get to enjoy it.
For me, I had to pedal one of those basic bikes for about 9 miles a day for more than two years back in high school and I say -- Bring On Those Gears!!!
As far as I'm concerned there's nothing un-needed on this bike.
@skatedonthate88 Oh really? I think it is pretty clever, I wish I had thought of it myself. I fact the U.S. Patent office thought it was ingenious enough to grant it a patent. But if you like changing gears there are many other great bikes out there for you.
@MylandriderThe rapid rise derailleur would shift to a lower gear when coasting to a lower speed, then when the rider when to continue pedaling the derailleur would be several gears lower than the when bike began coasting. The system wouldn't work on a bike that has a freewheel and a derailleur, that is why Shimano, a real bike company, developed a system that uses a dyno and internal gears.
@skatedonthate88 An automatic shift is basically a gimmick, not something that is really needed, and not something that is actually useful. It's not even that clever.
What would be better is embedded CO2 cartridges inside the tube that work on keeping the tube inflated in the event of a leak and reports the problem to an LED on the handlebar or something, enough CO2 to keep things inflated so that the bike rider can turn around and get home before it's completely flat.
@Plisken1986 Ha! Finding a good single-speed bicycle isn't that easy any more. I miss my old beach cruising single speed with the Bendix coaster breaks but the rear axel seized up and everything came screaming apart while I was biking down from Crystal Lake at around 45 miles an hour, and that killed the bike -- I couldn't afford to purchase a new Bendix that I wanted, alas.
Now I have a 10 speed I hauled out of a scrap metal trash heap and, after fixing it up, I love it.
It shifts very smoothly whether you are pedaling fast or slow. It only shifts when you change the speed at which you are going, it is very predictable. You should try one!
I could see this messing up big time. I'd rather just shift myself because most of the time I would want to choose the exact gear I wanted to be in. What's next, a bike that automatically brakes?
I've had my bike for over 5 years and have NEVER had anything mess up on it. All I have had are smooth rides. And there are thousands of Landrider Autoshift bike owners that would agree with me. LandRider offers a hybrid model and a comfort road model that let you do your own shifting, if that is what you prefer. Happy riding!
In fact your comment and comments like this are proof enough that we are de-evolving as a species. If calling yourself a "cyclist" means denigrating anyone who does not enjoy things the way you do, then call me a happy rider. Thank you.
Everyone should be on a bike! To enjoy all the other benefits of a ride, like the exercise, the fresh air, the scenery or simply going from point A to point B. If you think that changing gears is THE fun part of riding a bike - this bike is not for you.
@Plisken1986 Really dude there is nothing wrong with a multi speed bicycle that can be almost as easy to ride as a single speed. If that's not your "cup of tea", then don't ride one. Simple! But that doesn't mean others can't, and that's fair.

Honestly, if shifting a geared bike is that much of a problem, then maybe a single speed would be better.
Plisken1986 2 years ago 12
The AutoShift is as easy as a single speed, but with the benefits of having all those gears.

@Plisken1986 Yes I want to see elderly pensioners on fixed gears doing skid stops!

No autoshift needed!

You have to pedal very fast for it to shift. Don't ever stand up and pedal. It could shift when you are not ready.

There isn't much to shifting. If you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be on a bike.

I guess if someone can't drive a manual shift car, they shouldn't be driving...huh? Dumb remark!
