My father and I sat up at 1 a.m. to listen to the launch. No direct TV coverage in NZ in 1969, there were none of the high-capacity satellites that we take for granted today and NZs TV technology was not up to live coverage of overseas events. So we listened to it on the radio and heard the countdown and launch at thirty-two minutes past the hour and the gigantic crackling roar of the Saturn and we were never more aware than in that moment of being caught up in history as it was happening.
