Jason I was just wondering how expensive the Transplant is. My Partner has Type 1 diabetes. And I'm just curious because I would like to set up a financial game plan so she doesn't have to stress over insulin anymore. I'm tired of feeling helpless and not being able to help her. And so when I heard of the transplant I got excited on the prospect of her having alittle breathing room. I'm just trying to improve my knowledge of the subject as best as I can.
I had mine done at UW Madison by Dr Fernandez.. Once in a while I feel like my BS is high and I run to check my sugar and it is normal. I wish this was the cure, I know it is not, but it is a step in the right direction. The more of us that stay insulin fee after the transplant, the better! Who knows maybe one day it will be insurance approved! So were you off insulin completely in '05 or '07?
Jason, how are you doing 4 years out after having the Islet Cell Transplant? I had mine in 2005 and I am going on 6 years. I am still insulin free and BS are normal as are my C-peptides. Let me know how you are doing. - Julie
I am 31, type 1 diabetic (pump user) since 18 years of age. I Live in Nova Scotia and am very interested in the islet cell transplant in Edmonton. Who can I call for more information and how do I get on the waiting list for this procedure?
HI there - great video. can you share what hospital did your transplant? Was it Dr. hering at U of MN? Also, would you be interested in sharing your story via my foundations newsletter, Diabetes Wellness News. If so, please let me know. Andrea
I wish to have this done to me. I have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 4 and it is a pain in the rear. Do you need to have a kidney transplant before this is done?
@Islet79 I live in New York City. I have been praying all of my life for the day that I would not to give myself these stupid shot anymore. It sucks to prick your fingers all the time and give yourself shots.
Thanks for sharing!!! I just had my 1st islet cell transplant on April 9, 2010, just over one year after a living donor kidney transplant. Were you and are you still insulin free? Would love to hear how you are feeling two years out.
@fsurenae Great news about you! I am actually 5 years out from my 1st, the video was my 2nd tx. Things are great and still insulin free, with great sugars!!
@Islet79 ...Wonderful results!!! I'm encouraged and inspired! Were you insulin free after tx #1? How long between your two txs? Seems as though you are in PA. Would love to chat via private email if you're up for it. Being newly transplanted, I have lots of questions. Again, so glad to hear you are doing so well. I'm sure your wife is as thrilled as my husband is. Truly amazing! :)
Congradulations, Now Get Out There And Show Us How Its Done. Thanks Dude, You and Your Wife Are Great. Well He Proved He Had Guts Before He Walked In, But Now We Know That They'll Function Properly. Hugs & Kisses To You Both. Have A Great New Life.
Thank you so much, Jason, for sharing this video with us. Please post an update on your health if you can. I'm trying to do as much research as I can and trying to get my boyfriend on a list for a transplant.
Thank you for sharing your story. I am in the process of being evaluated to be put on the list. If you had to do it all over, would you? How many transplants to this date have you had? What drugs did you go on post transplant? If I could talk to you that would be great. My cell is 321-436-3905.
Thanks a million for posting this. Very inspiring. How long did the first transplant let you be insulin free? How sudden was the change that let you know it was time for another? And what was that change like exactly?
Been type 1 for 33 years and been following all research for a decade now. I think the most advanced is LCT with their encapsulated pig transplant. The huge benefit is "NO" anti rejection drugs. They are still trying to get approval in New Zealand but have trials going in Russia. Enjoy your independence for as long as it lasts. God Bless.
I am aware of LCT and their trials - and to be honest, I am happy that I am where I am. There are many other issues with the encapsulated trials - and remember that everything you read in the media isn't as optimistic as it may seem. Even the Edmonton protocol was portrayed as a cure to start - but as it turns out, it is a very effective treatment for those that are able to have it. Hopefully one of the groups of scientist will oneday find a real cure!!
WOW!!! Jason, thank you for sharing your experience. I cannot wait to meet you and Sarah!! ( I am now an official you tube user...this was my first time!!!)
Hey Jason, My wife is trying to get on the waiting list. Thanks a lot for posting the video it really helped her a lot. who sings the song that you have on the video? Would you please post an update on your progress. Thanks, Paul
jo the song is by the foo fighters, times like these is the song, hope you get your wife on the waiting list, i 've had diabetes for 18 years and never really got the complete hang of it, mark
