Actually no, its not a myth its proven. All Mhalmayeh of this generation as we call them have grandparents who spoke Aramaic. They are indigenous of Mardin, the reason they call themselves Mhallimi is because Hilma in Aramaic means Dream and Mhalmayeh mean the Dreamers because they dreamt of the day where they would convert back to Christianity during the Muslim Ottoman conquest of the area which forbid Christianity. Most Mhallimi still have crosses in there houses but they say its flowers.

I remember one of my Mkhalmaya friend who was telling me about how his mother presses the sign of the cross when she creates her dough (which is an Assyrian christian tradition to bless the bread) and he doesn't know why. No one living in the levant and northern Mesopotamia are "Arabs". Are you sure about that? The name Mardin comes from Assyrian meaning "Fortresses". Th Deyrulzafaran monastery was built by Assyrians but the city of Mardin itself had never existed before the 3rd century AD, however most of the Area was under the Ancient Assyrian empire prior to that.
