I have a 1991 Lada NIva, and fuel economy is about 10L/100km. It has a 1600cc carburettor engine. From 1992 they got given a 1700cc fuel injected engine, which is meant to give better performance, and increased fuel economy. Fuel economy for a vehicle of its capacity is fairly poor, and I have found that mine uses more fuel than our 2008 Ford Falcon(4000cc). All depends how you drive it also

yes, Niva is great! ...but don't forget the engine comes from the old Fiat 1.600 like many other parts of the car.

I had a Niva and it was fantastic on the snow and in the mud, but nothing compares my actual "Campagnola", a 25 yo car that keep beating the modern offroads.

Do you have a lot of these in Australia??Because I only saw one once. And the quality of these vehicles seems to be quite quite controversial. It's Russian made (isn't it?), so on the one hand you could say it is built for extreme conditions, on the other hand you can say it is built by peolple who dont give a f..k about anything and are drunk at work.

you know nothin' about russia and russian people, you only watch your TV where all information is for people witj little brain. when i'm visitin Europe or canada... omg i can really understand why a lot of people there are such poorminded... i'm workin in big insurance company, got VW passat highline as my car for everyday usage and NIVA charge for offroad just for fun.

A really tough little 4x4 especially with a good set of tyres - very under rated.

I spent a few weeks driving through Russia on the Mongol rally. It was such an experience and I'd advise anyone to go there. But got to admit the standard of cars and road safety was shocking, the trucks owned the road and a fair few of cars (and lorries) would never be considered road worthy in the UK. But was still a great experience and Russian people very nice to us all. Oh and the Lada's put our car to shame on the bad roads! Truly immense cars and built for a purpose!

How can you even compare Niva with Hammer Mercedes G or Land Rover? New Niva costs less than the rear seat for any of those. $70k Rover starts dripping oil on the floor of new car showroom, Hammer needs repairs after 40k miles. I don't know about Merc. G but for $90k it better be good. And Niva is $7-8k dollars-street bum can afford one. Take your Hammer to that mud cave and see if it'll climb back.
