  • I've never been cool with this! It just seems gross & unsanitary.

  • Great, but in some cultures people need water to wash their genitals after doing it. Is that possible with those toilets?

  • great !

  • this is awesome,

i wish my family would let me do this

  • unsanitary bastards, i will never buy into this shit, high flow toilets FTW!!!

  • yes, shit could be our future but could be our end, too

before have an opinion here, read this: humanure_handbook_third_edition

  • wow she knows her SHIT!

  • I always read that sawdust is used but I wonder if shredded newspaper, sand or dirt would work just as well?

  • I caught myself actually holding my breath while watching this ! LOL!

  • She can go on Hoarders... for collecting sh*t.

  • I find this all very interesting, we can survive on our own. Its a matter of learning and teaching. This is but one of many videos on permaculture, I'm viewing. Thank you.

  • um if anyone can tell me i really need to find something more compact very small it would be a great help thanks

  • Definitely need to do something down this line . Cant get enough compost through veg scraps ...also all that water ..what a waste!!!

  • What about piss?

  • @FutileFreak What about it?

  • Never use human or meat-eating animal's feces for compost!

Only plant eaters like horses, cows, rabbits, chicken manure is safe for gardens and it has to be old or cool.

  • @Nanaknows60 - it's ok to use crap that comes from rubbish diets as long as the crap is left to decompose until it is dry and has no smell.

It's also ok to have grazing / pasture that is used in a crop rotation or just leaves the plant-eaters waste on the land to break down naturally, but if you are putting manures from animals into soil feed then yes it's usually best not to use it fresh. Some exceptions like sheep fowl goat kak can go in buried directly, if you're using any dig methods.

  • @Nanaknows60 And if we are raw foods vegan?

  • @Caoimhinism .....well as long as you don't include a vegans fart....then I'm sure it will be an equally ''pleasant'' experience ...;-)

  • i'll stick to indoor plumbing...

  • euhm... that first view when you opened up just destroyed my apetite.. thanks xD

  • Hello,

I am very impressed with your methodology.

A few questions pop to mind, though.

1- Does it not need to be aerated? Don't the worms and micro organisms need to breath?

2- Temperature wise, you have it in the shade. In good old Egypt, trees and bushes are kind of difficult to come by. Do we put the buckets underneath a canopy or something?

3- I also noticed you don't tumble your mixture; I'm just curious why.

I have no doubt that your methods work.

I just need direction :) Thanks

  • Absolutely disgusting. I'm all for natural, but within reason...

  • @stormbytes this is within reason! you say youa ere all for natural but you cant handle composting you own shit?! the veg you buy at the store has had cow shit and horse shit to grow in! ... so how is this any different?! if you were all for natural this would get your aproval !!!

  • @NocturnalBreather Look, you have a point about how veggies are grown but it human waste is seriously gross. I mean cow shit doesn't bother me, but I feel this might be a stretch. To each his own. I'm really am all for natural. In fact, looking at staw-bale building for my next structure - but it will be all plumbing for me thanks very much!

  • @NocturnalBreather Because horses, cows and chickens are not carnivorous, and nor does their shit generally carry dangerous pathogens like human waste can carry. There are many dangerous viruses and other stuff that can make you very sick as the result of exposure to human waste. The same with other carnivorous wastes. That is why they tell you not to put dog or cat shit into compost bins.

  • @proptopkus - composting crap shouldn't usually be done the same way that kitchen waste etc is composted, it should be contained and left to naturally decompose, usually buried underground (either to directly decompose or in containers that are removed once decomposition is over).

True about pathogens but a proper compost toilet, indoor or outdoor, is still way healthier than running it through pipes, treated with bio-toxins & then dumped into the sea...or as slurry for that matter.

  • @stormbytes get over it. how do you feel when taking a shit? thats natural, taking a shit. do you find taking a shit 'absolutely disgusting'? i think we should see a lot more people using composting toilets, it would help the earth out big time. look at earthworms, they keep soil rich in nutrients by consuming soil and plant material then shitting it out. i prefer plumbing too but i would never be afraid to use these types of toilets as i know i would be doing good for the earth.

  • Maybe this works better in the country definitly not in the city, not very neighborly plus the Health Dept wouldn't allow. More chores around the house, make the beds, make dinner and oh, lift the bucket of shit out to the garden.

  • @jbadal1 wtf is wrong with some people, its a COMPOSTING toilet. ok? the shit naturally breaks down thanks to the effects of NATURE. it is no longer SHIT once it has decomposed. its turned into a natural SOIL. so no, you saying Health Dept wouldnt allow is wrong. im pretty sure they would know how a fucking composting toilet would work and that the shit is no longer an issue onces it has decomposed, geez some people really have no fucking idea...

  • @jbadal1 'lift the bucket of shit out to the garden' - no, you mean 'lift the bucket of NATURALLY BROKEN DOWN HUMAN WASTE WHICH HAS TURNED INTO A NATURAL SOIL into the garden to help the plants grow thanks too the many, many nutrients inside...

  • @timtam20292 - yeah plus anyway - the main gripe would be if you can see or smell the kak when you 'flush' it - which needn't be a concern since we do have such things as valve-type 'flushes' - I'd recommend those anyway as the last thing you want if you dropped something down the pan by accident is trying to retrieve it from loads of shit, instead of just your own. Use what aeroplane toilets use - type of vacuum or valve flush.

  • Her layout would make a pretty nice cematery. the way all "her" jungle is growing on the white tubs.

  • Her layout would make a pretty nice cematery.

  • once I own my own home,im so getting one of these

  • congradulations! I don't see why people like to criticize every little detail. I built waterless toilets here in Mexico (totally different). But the botton line is that people like us are actually DOING someting. Thank you!

  • @pitajames Pathogens are where the manure sits, but also in the same spot are the thermophillic bacteria, which kills the pathogens.. No need for much turning, But It requires calculation and materials such as greens and browns, to cover and mix the manure. There are many good books, and web site describing the process. It is the most ideal way of composting of any manure.

This barell lsystem is much much slower.

  • I guess after a few months, but even then wouldn't using it as manure cause alot of cases of ecoli?

  • Must agree with zenjirou, better in the open air as per The Humanure Handbook by J Jenkins, much quicker turnover and higher mass means higher temps to kill any pathogens, and you only need to use one bucket!!

  • so u put leaves in ur toilet an shit on them?

  • The future is shit!

  • brown gold. shit is valuable, dont flush it.

  • @Cytacon you`r rite `bout that

  • good

  • That's great!

  • Very interesting. Do the worms crawl up the toilet sides? Would you use the fertilizer on lower plants like lettuce?

You should also collect the wee. In a day, there are as many nutrients in wee as there are in poo, and you can use it straight away. It would also prevent pollution from leaching into the ground.

  • Our family uses TP like its free. What about all that paper? Does it dissolve fast?

  • you deserve a trillion dollars

  • well if this was 1840 you could sell all of that and they'll make the kno3 for blackpowder for the military

  • cool system . and the lady doing the talkin is very attractive

  • @ttthhheeerrrooonnn

She looks like an elf. Which is pretty cool.

  • @fleshtheworld She is showing us elven toilets, how elves do their business. :p

  • hmmmmm

  • thats the shit

  • Too much trouble. Why not just using a pit latrine?

Dig a huge deep pit, use it for 20 years, then cover it with soil and dig a new one.

The pit acts like these plastic barrels without the need to move feces around.

  • @Favel22 hey, the leaching from a latrine is huge, almost 20 metres around the pit which leaks into groundwater etc. it also stinks because of the open air and animals can easily get into it. you should take a glance at The Humanure Handbook on scribd.com, it explains alot of those issues with great scientific details. the clip here she is composting the matter individually, you can simply place it in your normal compost easily and save on buckets:)

  • Comment removed

  • Not to mention the fact that the heat from a properly managed compost can kill a great host of pathogens; has anyone asked the question of how long they can survive outside their host? Are they able to prosper after so much time? Also, one should find out what the acceptable levels are for a particular pathogen/pollutant. Then, one should research all of the products they utilize that may contain these same "acceptable" levels.

  • this is fantastic thankyou

  • this would work best for vegetarians.

I wouldn't recommend doing this if all you eat is fast food and your feces squirt out like a fountain of acid.

  • @DaveBarTV indeed

  • @DaveBarTV Nice, that is hifuckenlarious!!

  • My thing is is that is it really an organic way of doing this and safe? The reason I'm saying this is the foods we eat in our body are made up of really horrible chemicals we have eatin from our grocery store and natural chemicals from our body added to those digested chemicals sounds like a bad combination.

  • they are kiwis actually, lol. awesome stuff, very interesting. As terrestrial beings our waste doesnt belong in the ocean or a pond. i think this system is great, a very helpful video about the process:) thanks for putting it up

  • @dgbregman I would never use dog shit, too many nasty things in there like giardia

  • @dgbregman I forgot to say that there is a reason why people use crap from grass eating animals

  • Comment removed

  • @dgbregman well if you're going to have an attitude and be a jerk then go ahead and use dog SHIT and see what happens. I really don't give a fuck.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @dgbregman no I responded that way because I was trying to help you but all I got was attitude. You obviously havn't done any research on using dog manure because nobody with half a brain would use it for composte.

  • Comment removed

  • @dgbregman If dogs were meant to eat plants they would be born with the correct enzymes to properly digest plant material. I feel sorry for your dog.

  • @ROTTIMAN31 dont feel sorry, just shut up

  • @dgbregman haha, deleting comments because you know you're an idiot and a bad liar. lmao

  • @dgbregman however if you enjoy playing around in E. coli, giardia, fecal coliform bacteria, giardia and salmonella etc. etc. then go right ahead and use all the dog poo you can find.

  • I think I saw a peanut in there! 3:50

  • you English faggot hippies make me sick.

  • @Armornone They are Aussies u dumb fuckwit.

  • Comment removed

  • @hablerz They are New Zealanders actually

  • we should just poop everywhere in public & revive the soil all over the world!

  • @oahuguy LoL yeah why not.Fun to do and good for the earth.I think I'm going to become a nudist who shits any and everywhere.

  • oh crap i dropped my coffee mug in my crap. Oh well just fill it up again

  • This lady really likes poop. I bet she's single.

  • I wasnt expecting to see the guano. That was a hell of a pile.

  • Holy fuck, this is pretty cool. Saw dust, human shit, and some eisenia fetida, one year. G2g!

  • Awesome! :)

  • Is the human compost odorless after a year(+) of composting?

  • When you eat alkaline organic diet, your own shit will be the best compost shit in the world! the most precious element to produces food garden forests as never seen before!

  • It really cracks me up how some folks are "scared" of getting their own shit on them. lol

  • WAS THAT CORN.......

  • can you use humanure for a vegtable garden?

    cool video.

  • @alzathoth yes... in my city, they pumps all the treated sludge to a composting facility. they combine that with all the yard waste collected and sell it as compost. It is an EXCELLENT product, (very black) ii'll post videos. the city HAD to make the compost facility, AND man made wet lands, because our river was getting WAY to much nitrogen. With those 2 projects they reduced the nitrogen input by 95%. along with several cities up stream. google goldsboro NC compost facility

  • Sometimes I poop in jars and keep the jars in the basement. My mom gets real mad and hurls the jars at me, but she has to clean that shit up.

  • @zoomerlawns hahahaha

  • If the buckets have holes in the bottom, isnt it possible that when transfering bucket from toilet to composting area, some leeks out?

Excellent vid., beaut garden. Good attitude "can be as simple as that".

    Recommend the Humanure handbook.

  • good point Salt sea, she says the pee drips out, the urine is why it smell, it drips through into a lower bucket which has saw dust and she mulches it out- after how long? Does it stop smelling?

  • I am interested in the pee collector too. Surely this will contain pathogens worm eggs to some degree.

I am also intrested in the possible leakage from the solids bucket as it is transfered from the toilet site to the composting site. Pedantic i know but this is a serious business.

Possible solution: to encougage toliet users to pee in woodchip urinal and poo in unholed bucket. Any accidential urine inclusion can be absorbed by woodchips. Holes in top of bucket for composting process.

  • excellent - saving precious water too!

  • What happens to the "sawdust filled bucket out the back" where all the fluids are drained? I imagine this bucket would fill regularly and need to be disposed of in some specific manner.

  • human shit is not fit for agriculture,as it's impure...use only cow dung an urine.....

    iscowp mauritius

  • @govindas999

you sound so fucking sure of yourself.

    watch?v=RRTPFs6JRX0 watch?v=wFR4c1OTrBY

  • All of these people saying that this is gross to use as fertilizer probably smoke too... If you only knew how half of the things you consume actually were made, you would never eat or drink anything again...

    Grow up.

  • @GRIM2594 thats my plan, I'm going to start raising an organic garden and not eating most of that crap they sell at the store

  • @PlayGurlParty That sounds interesting. I would love to hear progress updates!

  • @GRIM2594 - they're so f-ing stupid if they think it's gross to compost waste - out of sight and smell, and without any pollution coming from it being dumped into the sea etc. They probably eat fish and go swimming or paddling in the seas where sewage is dumped into.

What could be more gross than having shit and piss flying through pipes in buildings & underfoot. They should be forced to make all that see-through, then we'll see who is disguisting. It's the current system that is disguisting.

  • Umm if it comes from your body in the first place. Is set in the compost for a year. Then fed to your plants and then they might have those back in them and then you eat it and die because of it? I'm sorry but seems a bit far fetched!

  • @hay427 pathetic assumption...

  • anybody try black soldier fly larvae for humanure?

  • The black chimney is key to making this system aerobic. There has to be a system of pipes (pvc with holes drilled in it) inside the toilet, connected to the black pipe (which must extend above the out-house). The sun heats the black pipe causing air to rise thus drawing in air from below, which in turn provides O2 to the bacteria. Getting it to go aerobic is key.

  • There are much better ways of doing this. If composted in open air, aerobically, it will thermophilicly compost, reaching high temps and killing all pathogens.

Would be inert and ready in a couple months, rather than a year.

  • @zenjirou This composting wouldn't occur in the absence of oxygen, so in effect, it is being aerobically broken down.

  • By the way, for those of you who may not know, Disneyland uses a waste recovery system, and uses that treated waste to grow some of their plants.

  • I have no idea why people think this is gross. It's a fantastic way to use a renewable resource. There is already an organic fertilizer on the market called "Milorganite" which is granulated human sewage sludge, and I have to say, it's the best fertilizer I have EVER used.

This is no different than using composted animal manure in the garden. Why waste this compost? It's fantastic! The plants testify to it! Look how lush and healthy they look.

  • If you like that stuff, you should get it fresh, when it is still very bioactive. Wastewater treatment plants use microbes in a series of pools, to filter and degrade the organic matter in sewage. The result is basically the finest composted matter on the planet. Most have a loading area where people can come take as much as they want for free.

  • It's a much more complete decomposition process than this system. Of course heavy metals won't decompose, but I know little about the medications. They do test for certain metals at the facilities.

  • this video is about a composting toilet system...I am building one just like it...the stuff goes to a composting area, and it travels from the first section to the last in 3 years...that destroys all the patogenic agents, degrades them...and the compost can be used for around trees and for pots...just fine...safe.

  • If i were homeless, in a third world country, i would poo on grass, and eat what i can find, or hanging with bear grills.

  • Great Video - thanks for sharing!!

  • Holly crap !!! Whats with all the hate?...lol. I got 6 negative thumbs down on my last comment , just because I would never use my own shit to grow my veggies? ...lol.?

It might be okay for some to do this, but Im just saying this is not for me. Thats all. No need to burry me with it...hehe. Peace. :)

  • i want to live like this

  • In many other countries, they use animal (usually cow or pig) urine, fermented, and then sprayed on crops. It's an amazing source of nutrients. Why would human urine/excrement be "so much grosser"? Do we think cows and pigs are cleaner than us? Or is it that Doritos broken down into feces is not appropriate for putting on your garden?

  • yeah, alot of ppl. here in mexico are worried about eatin' veggies watered with treated sewer water,....cause they might get an infection or something but the plant drinks the water and in the process of growin' all toxins not needed by the plant are left in the soil,...or i am wrong?=P

  • yes.. things like lettuce and spinach are actually in contact with the patogens, even tomatoes, etc...

Sewage must be treated...there are natural ways of getting the patogens out..

..population should be intent on ts decrease in MX and elsewhere...otherwise these problems are likely to get worse, specially around metropolitan areas.

  • It's not a good idea to use human waste to grow veg that is eaten by humans. Some pathogens can be transferred in some cases. Just don't risk it.

  • I plan on using it for decorative trees and bushes...will use mostly sawdust...not in my vegetable beds...those will be raised, made of brick, and using no-till, heavily mulched, fukuoka techniques...none of that compost.

    why risk...you're right...

  • When it is properly handled pathogens cannot transfer. Compost typically is working at high temperatures, therefor, killing any bad micro-organisms.

  • I would use it only when it doesn't come in direct contact with the food.I would think fruit trees or berry bushes wouldn't be an issue.

  • what was the ponit of that coment?!?

  • If you simply put human crap in your garden it will only cause problems and be gross.

There's a proper set of steps for it to be good.

You have to let it change and rot. To let it turn into nutrient rich soil which takes quite a bit of time.

You do that before using it in your garden.

  • some people take being green a little to far. I compost, but im never going to compost my crap!

  • people have been doing this since forever.. its not some consumer trend

  • I really want to know what happens to the urine? Is there a separate container collecting it? I understand why they let it drain to keep down the smell. I think about the fact that animals poo and pee on the ground all the time. The ground acts as a filter for their urine and poo just decomposes. But who wants to smell urine around their house, so what happened to the urine.

  • @vbirdieb

As far as I've seen in various systems (dairy, etc), if there is enough low-nitrogen stuff (paper, sawdust, manure) it combines well with the urine during composting and reduces smell to nearly nothing. It does depend on correct ratios (I suppose one could gradually learn and adjust over a few months) and on enough O2.

  • Comment removed

  • cold shit doesnt smell, unlike warm shit.

  • There are a number of commercial units widely available, and DIY plans are common. For other small scale systems of human waste handling, and outdoor ('Outhouse' or 'Dunny') styles of toilets, research latrine, pit latrine, and arborloo or tree bog, all of which are forms of less controlled psychrophilic or mesophilic decomposition, and may not protect ground water from nutrient or pathogen contamination, provide optimum nutrient recycling, or be appropriate in urban settings.

  • A composting toilet is a closed unit, not connected to a sewage system or septic tank, used to receive, contain, and compost human waste via aerobic biodegradation. In replacing a standard flush toilet the purpose of these units is the conservation of water resources otherwise used for flushing, while avoiding release of potentially pathogenic materials into the environment, and conserving useful nutrients for fertilizing home gardens.

  • u got that off of wiki

  • question... what was the smell like in that last bucket she opened?

i guess it was dirt smell? total compost?

  • Mind you; I personally wouldn't put holes in the bottom of the barrells as any pathogens would get drained out of the compost (and into the water-table) before they die out.

  • I put the human "disgust " of what we produce as "shit" as one of our major problems to deal with.

It has created a cleaner than thou mentality...hence all our products to kill 99% of all known germs. We need to be less anal retentive and start being productive... it will save you a fortune in fertilizers, and "bought" shit.

Right I'm off to pee on my roses.

  • @walkingbear56 hahahahaha

  • when my husband and I build our house, we will be installing a composting toilet. This is a great way to recycle!

  • what do you mean 'it is amazing what the mind will come up with to recycle things'. this is the normal cycle of things... it is amazing that people poo into water which then needs to be clearified to be (in some cases) drunk afterwards.

  • I have seen it all now. Not sure how I feel about it but I have mixed feelings. I would have to wrap my mind around composting my own poop to put around my fruit trees. It is amazing what the mind of man will come up with to recycle things.

  • it is amazing the systems humans have come up with to deal with their poop. We should be taking care of our personal poop rather than passing the buck like most of us do - and it ends up not being dealt with very responsibly in the end! This is important! we must deal with our poop or soon it will be the only thing we have!!

  • It's great to hear most people that comment see the good in this. I agree that urine doesn't need to be separate. Of course, I also read the humanure handbook. Jenkins has a YouTube page with a bunch of stuff on it.

  • Did you see that massive mountain of shit in the bucket!?

  • That was a massive mountain of shit, but what you saw was sawdust covering that mountain.

  • I've been reading about composting toilets, but this is the first video of a complete, working system I've seen.

So holes are drilled in the bottom of each barrel and the liquid drains out to where? All over the floor in the composting bathroom and all over the ground when the barrel is full and placed outside?

That can't be right, can it? If so, the liquid would become a home and ground pollutant because it was never allowed to compost. Can someone clarify this for me. Thanks.

  • Uve been brainwashed by modern society into thinking feces/urine is a polutant!

    It is treaure for plants!

Never forget this and u will be happey and rich!

  • it's only a treasure for plants after the bacteria (pathogens) have died off. otherwise, if you put raw sewage on your plants, they will carry those pathogens (salmonella, ecoli, hepatitis...) and you can't just wash it off.

  • These guys do things really weirdly. Don't use them as an example. Get the humanure handbook and read it cover to cover. Urine + Feces do not have to be seperated. All you have to do is balance the C and N by adding sawdust, yard waste and some straw as cover material in a compost pile. 1-2 buckets is all a family of 5 needs. Plus, of course, two compost piles.

  • modern sewage systems, (septic, sewers, etc) are VERY unclean to our environment as they are filled with standing water and foster VERY harmful gases and toxic waste. Think about it this way - ALL natural waste should be allowed to re-nurish the earth from which our food comes.

  • Exactly.

Urine is a great fertilizer. I always save mine in 2 liter bottles, then after keeping them in the sun for a month to ripen pour it in my garden.

Sprinkle a little dirt on top and ur Great@!!

  • The fact that there is such a vast array of composting toilet systems is a testament to how easily and safely done it can be, how natural it is, and that we need to get over our cultural phobias and start doing what is right and follows common sense. I would refer those interested in composting toilets to look into a book called "The Humanure Handbook". It is very well written and has an enormous amount of USEABLE information. Good fortune

  • "Experts" still recommend not using even this compost directly on plants or on soil growing root crops, but this is mainly done out of convention rather than objective risk assesment. In most cases 2 years is much more extreme than nessecary. Perinnial above ground crops, such as berry bushes and fruit and nut trees, amoung many others are completely without risk of carrying pathogens as they never come in contact with them.
