@projectbrumaire: You are incorrect. He was in a non-combat MoS, but he did go thru basic training everyone that joins the army goes thru basic so he knew how to fire a wpn and had field training. Thats why when The captain picked him he said, "Did you fire the wpn in basic training? Then get your gear."
I know Upham wasn't a soldier but seriously, when you know your friends being killed in the next room I think you would walk in there and just shoot the bastard.
@issenterprise1 no the direct pull back a .45 gives is not even the fraction of the amount of force needed to penetrate the round of a 88mm shell, you'd need Sir Issac Newton's mathematical theorem of gravity (to allow missile drop), mixed with Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity (force of the launch) and finally Robin Hood's accuracy (aiming) to line up that very shot. Good luck to who ever clears this mythbuster-OH WAIT A MINUTE!
the Germans fought ferociously and with honor with much less men and almost no air support by this part of the war, after 1942, they were always outnumbered and outsupplied, yet they killed twice as many enemies as the other side, but of course there is no movie about them: the most disciplined, honorable, skilled, intelligent military body in the history of mankind
@MrNewYorkNewYork4 if your in a tower and people are rushing or going to you of course youll shoot more all your doing is waiting , and the ss were the ones who wore the nazi suits the rest were prob enlisted in the military before nazi took over germany and they had help by the axis...well North korea does but more than half of there money on Military hhm
@MrNewYorkNewYork4 the larger the force, the easier it is to kill large masses of enemies. as long as you are covered right. so it doesn't matter how small the german forces were. they were well protected most of the time
P-51's were as good at destroying tigers with their machineguns inside a city as knocking down trees with their propellers, so that's a bit of bullcrap, there were other planes for that role, typhoon and hurricane for example.

@LastDayStudios PISH!. All soldiers are equally trained in weapons and basic tactics regardless of their role. Upham was a coward who most probably would have been shot for cowardice after a court martial convicted him for dereliction of duty. His actions (or lack of them) led to the deaths of the majority of his section. Upham was supposed to be a representation of the viewer within the film(read Spielbergs accompanying booklet or the movie)
@johnsy88 Obviously the movie already stated that he was trained >If you listen to what he says in the movie "Iv'e Never shot a weapon sir" Clearly tell you that he'd NEVER KILLED AN OPPOSING SOLDIER, Therefore, he had no war experience under his belt, therefore, his role was a "Field translator" in a gruesome predicament. And when you give field translator a weapon and tell them to be a killer, what results do you think you're gonna get? Its like a Cop giving a receptionist a gun in a Shootout.
@LastDayStudios you actually do not know what your talking about. All military personnel always get basic weapons and field training and if you think this is wrong or has changed in the last 80 years within western army's then go read a few history books. It doesn't matter if your a cook or part of a rifle platoon in an Infantry unit. you still get BASIC training (see the clue in the name). Upham would have been tried by court martial and convicted for dereliction of duty. FIN
@johnsy88 actually, you're the one reiterating a point that im not even debating, I never said that he wouldnt have been tried in court, or that what he did goes against standard military law, I'm clearly pointing out the magnitude of shear fear and terror that he felt under those circumstances which prevented him to act heroic. Now if you were REALLY paying attention, you'd see that even PRIVATE RYAN BALLED UP AND CRIED! because the terror of war hits a person hard.. DESPITE TRAINING. ~Veteran~
@LastDayStudios Well thats funny considering that in the 7 years i served in 1 Rifles i never saw one of my fellow comrades curl up in a ball and cry like a baby whilst under fire on OP Tellic or OP Herrick. @johnsy88 Its great to know your comrades were brave at all times....some of us arent brave...at all times given the situation....have you ever seen, or been in the gruesome predicament that these soldiers experienced? you look to your left and see tanks coming at you, look to your right and see your fellow soldiers arms, legs and other body parts being blown off in your face....what do you think that'll do to you, if you havent ever killed anyone in your life? Such as in Upham's case.
@LastDayStudios Yes i have. ive lost alot of good friends and colleagues in the last 7 years ( steve thompson, danny clack, mark palin, marty lamb, kev fortuna, tom gaden, paul upton, jamie gunn, stevie kingscott, danny nield) and everyone on of them died showing the professionalism and courage the fictional character upham didnt once display. every soldier is shit scared in combat but you do your job with composure and professionalism because your looking out for your mucker! Did Upham.?
our grandfathers were badasses, ww2 was horrific. i dont think my generation would ever give so much of themselves for there country or anything for that matter
American propaganda at its finest. No American 'Freedoms' were at risk by the Germans having a beef with the British. I am SO sick of this phony "patriotism" and smarmy 'American Exceptionalism.' However, it is worth noting this movie quotes another "American" tyrant, LINCOLN, who DID trample on 'Freedom' as well as the Constitution. Very aprapos to quote that fucker.
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You're saying that while Hitler and Nazi Germany would almost certainly have won the war without American involvement, they really didn't pose any threat to the United States? What do you base this on? Certainly not reality. Where exactly do you think Hitler would have turned his sights after the surrender of Great Britain (and, yes, the Soviets would have eventually folded too)?
While the United States may not have ever been directly invaded, we would certainly have been attacked by the Nazis sooner or later..all you have to do is read "Mein Kampf" to understand how dedicated Hitler was to spreading the ideas of National Socialism across the globe. Remember too that the US had the world's 18th largest military before Pearl Harbor. Had we continued on that path, Hitler would have found us to be an extremely unprepared target nation.
Further, Germany had been pursuing the creation of an atomic bomb from nearly the start of the war. While our own "Manhattan Project" did start pre-war in 1939, it never received any real funding until after the US became involved in the conflict. It is VERY likely that Hitler would have developed the bomb before us if we'd stayed on the side lines (as it was, they were less than a year out by the war's end). He would certainly have used it to bring America to bay.
@mco119 Thats because the Americans were to busy planning War Plan Red (cancelled 1939 when America realised it could disband the British Empire by allowing Nazi Germany to push Britain to its limits and have to come crawling for help from the US and thus give up its Empire which America would inherit)
Britain stood alone whilst the so called free world watched and debated whether it was financially viable to get involved...
Ah, okay, man. I can tell the history books you're reading are a little..uh.."different." Though my guess is that you didn't get theories like this from any respected source. No offense.
@mco119 Well if you have academic credentials then you should understand the term "Contradiction" which is what your last comment was considering that you mock my comments/opinions/personnel knowledge without even knowing or understanding my own personnel experiences or "credentials" in life. I love trolling so if you want to play who gets the last word in then i can play all year...
I'm wondering, when Hollywood is going to make a film about finnish sniper "simo häyhä", after all they made a movie about russian sniper vasili Zaitsev so..
Steven made this film realistic to the point that you almost felt as if you were there in france. The heroes aren't always the ones who come out alive.
Also, im sorry that im ranting like this its just this movie made me so upset that i actually vowed i would never watch this movie again even if i was paid a million bucks to. but now im sorry for my assholish comments about steven its just i have an opinion to hate this movie and i do. he is a wonderful director but i just think he maybe went a little too extreme. thats all im goin to say. (god bless those poor souls who gave us our freedom AMEN.)
This movie pissed me the fuck off! I know that we didn't win every battle in the war, but in the end of this movie, Listen closely, THE NAZIS FUCKING KILL ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS YOU DONT WANT TO DIE! i dont get it. i though steven was an american. i thought he would leave at least a few of the guys alive but NOOOO he had kill everyone except two people. and yes i know its realistic. after seeing this movie, it makes me wonder if steven is even a true american.
@robonzgamer What a dumb comment sir.Firstly the soldiers are not nazi's they are normal german soldiers who where conscripted into the military just like their american counterparts, secondly its showing what really happens in war most of a squad sent behind enemy lines would die.
@residentevilfreakk55 yeah i know i get it. alot of people die in war. and i should instead of complaining about it, should be grateful for their sacrifice.
@robonzgamer I believe the point is that war is horrible. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean that they are going to live through it. If anything, it paints the picture more deeply of how serious war is when you see the character you love die. Steven does not sugar coat or protect his viewers. I like that about him. If you want a happy ending, watch something with Jennifer Anniston in it.
@hoy54 shut the fuck up dont compare a good movie to a lameass game that turns kids into posers and joining the army when they dont know what there getting into afgget
People that are calling Upham a pussy you obviously don't understand, Upham was sent to the war and that squad because he spoke German, he didn't want to fight, but he was sent to because of the fact that he spoke German. He didn't go up the stairs because he was scared, you don't know what you would have been like in a situation like that, because you have never been in that situation.
@MattAlbie And so they should! War is not a fun experience... As computer games try to depict. I only wish the young people of today would realise this. I have never been to war, but members of my family have been. Within the first 10 minutes of this movie I was left wondering how anyone could watch this and walk away thinking that war was something to be glorified.
@XeRemember i understand what your saying, but i still would have gathered the courage to go through the door. i would be scared as shit but i still would have gone in that room
Ive seriously debated on getting "Earn This" tattooed on my body many times. I might do it in the future. The words are profound and after the shit Ive doen and been through, I am grateful for everyday.
Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers make you realize who true heroes are. "Earn this." It wasn't just a reminder to Private Ryan, but every American.
And for the people who are picking on Upham, you guys watch too many Rambo movies. Try imagine yourself in his shoes. He wasn't even in Europe expecting to fight.
@pantheyepoops yeah pussy im pretty sure 4 of the men in my family are in the military some in the special forces and ive been raised to put others before myself and im trying to become a p.j and i would have to put others before myself and earlier he allowed germans to go upstairs and kill his friends and he let the german walk right past him second he layed down right next to a bunch of germans and didnt bother dropping a frag nor did he fire his weapon ok so stfu bc you dnt no shit
@pantheyepoops btw watch 2:56 nd tell me he was doing the right thing nd yeah im pretty sure i wouldnt have enlisted to fucking sit on my ass and let others die because of lazyness so u should stfu bc u dnt no shit about the military ur just a lazy peice of shit that plays cod all day and thinks he knows shit bout war
@pantheyepoops yeah ok u dont no a frag and a couple pulls of the trigger couldve taken them out so idk wtf you talking about and then his only kill was against a german that surrendered and he let germans go upstairs nd kill his friends bc he was too much of a pussy to go after them so face the facts uphams a pussy and yeah i woulda killed the german too but her was the bitch to convince them to let him go in the first place so shut up
@stlaxer23 It's a fucking war, it's not like walking into the middle school like you do everyday, it's dramatic, traumatic, and has a huge physiological effect.
@stlaxer23 By the way if he did anything at 2:56 he probably would of got himself killed, there was at least two dozen German soldiers right there! This is not you're run of the mill action flick, its supposed to have REALISM! Have a good one! :)
@alexgets98 hell no, he let him go earlier in the movie, with the promise that he would not return to combat, but he went right back to killing Americans - he got off easy, if it was me - I would have made him suffer.
I remember first watching this movie, I was not expecting Tom Hanks to die at the end of this movie. The ending totally got to me, it was so emotional. This is the best war film ever.
Tom Hanks is an advocate for WW2 & helping Steven Spielberg in Band of Brothers & The Pacific. He is also in Time Magazine showing pictures of WW2 & says his speech & why he is an advocate of WW2 in Time Magazine for WW2 pictures.
an old ww2 vet told me once the walfen ss where hitlers fanatics and he faced them like they did they would not run you had to kill them god bless our troops

@19Truth53
Had we continued on that path, Hitler would have found us to be an extremely unprepared target nation.
mco119 2 months ago
@19Truth53
He would certainly have used it to bring America to bay.
mco119 2 months ago
@mco119 Thats because the Americans were to busy planning War Plan Red (cancelled 1939 when America realised it could disband the British Empire by allowing Nazi Germany to push Britain to its limits and have to come crawling for help from the US and thus give up its Empire which America would inherit)
Britain stood alone whilst the so called free world watched and debated whether it was financially viable to get involved...

Ah, okay, man. I can tell the history books you're reading are a little..uh.."different." Though my guess is that you didn't get theories like this from any respected source. No offense.
mco119 1 day ago
@mco119 Yeah the history books i read are "actual books" and personal experience as opposed to your source of history which is "The History Channel"
johnsy88 1 day ago
@johnsy88
Ah, yes. I'm glad you understand my life experience and academic credentials, despite never meeting me. Good luck with your "books," sir.
mco119 1 day ago
@mco119 Well if you have academic credentials then you should understand the term "Contradiction" which is what your last comment was considering that you mock my comments/opinions/personnel knowledge without even knowing or understanding my own personnel experiences or "credentials" in life. I love trolling so if you want to play who gets the last word in then i can play all year...

Steven made this film realistic to the point that you almost felt as if you were there in france. The heroes aren't always the ones who come out alive.
spacedude2000 3 months ago
Also, im sorry that im ranting like this its just this movie made me so upset that i actually vowed i would never watch this movie again even if i was paid a million bucks to. but now im sorry for my assholish comments about steven its just i have an opinion to hate this movie and i do. he is a wonderful director but i just think he maybe went a little too extreme. thats all im goin to say. (god bless those poor souls who gave us our freedom AMEN.)
robonzgamer 4 months ago
This movie pissed me the fuck off! I know that we didn't win every battle in the war, but in the end of this movie, Listen closely, THE NAZIS FUCKING KILL ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS YOU DONT WANT TO DIE! i dont get it. i though steven was an american. i thought he would leave at least a few of the guys alive but NOOOO he had kill everyone except two people. and yes i know its realistic. after seeing this movie, it makes me wonder if steven is even a true american.
robonzgamer 4 months ago
@robonzgamer What a dumb comment sir.Firstly the soldiers are not nazi's they are normal german soldiers who where conscripted into the military just like their american counterparts, secondly its showing what really happens in war most of a squad sent behind enemy lines would die.
JordoF6 3 months ago
@JordoF6 I know its just that this is just a movie, but to me this is just a "one time watch movie" for me. hope i cleared that up.
robonzgamer 3 months ago
@robonzgamer dude that's war for you, you don't pick and choose who gets to live and who gets to die
residentevilfreakk55 3 months ago
@residentevilfreakk55 yeah i know i get it. alot of people die in war. and i should instead of complaining about it, should be grateful for their sacrifice.
robonzgamer 3 months ago
@robonzgamer I believe the point is that war is horrible. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean that they are going to live through it. If anything, it paints the picture more deeply of how serious war is when you see the character you love die. Steven does not sugar coat or protect his viewers. I like that about him. If you want a happy ending, watch something with Jennifer Anniston in it.

MattAlbie 2 months ago
@MattAlbie And so they should! War is not a fun experience... As computer games try to depict. I only wish the young people of today would realise this. I have never been to war, but members of my family have been. Within the first 10 minutes of this movie I was left wondering how anyone could watch this and walk away thinking that war was something to be glorified.

shamrawker911 4 months ago
Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers make you realize who true heroes are. "Earn this." It wasn't just a reminder to Private Ryan, but every American.
And for the people who are picking on Upham, you guys watch too many Rambo movies. Try imagine yourself in his shoes. He wasn't even in Europe expecting to fight.

@pantheyepoops yeah pussy im pretty sure 4 of the men in my family are in the military some in the special forces and ive been raised to put others before myself and im trying to become a p.j and i would have to put others before myself and earlier he allowed germans to go upstairs and kill his friends and he let the german walk right past him second he layed down right next to a bunch of germans and didnt bother dropping a frag nor did he fire his weapon ok so stfu bc you dnt no shit
stlaxer23 4 months ago
@pantheyepoops btw watch 2:56 nd tell me he was doing the right thing nd yeah im pretty sure i wouldnt have enlisted to fucking sit on my ass and let others die because of lazyness so u should stfu bc u dnt no shit about the military ur just a lazy peice of shit that plays cod all day and thinks he knows shit bout war
stlaxer23 4 months ago
@stlaxer23 HAHA, dont act like you know me dude!
1) Im not lazy I run five 3-5 miles on the tred mil everyday
2) Any call of duty game fucking sucks, I dont play that shit. I would much rather play the origanal half-life or system shock 2.
3) I may not know much about the military, but I do know the movie wouldn't be the same unless it played out the way it did.
pantheyepoops 4 months ago
@pantheyepoops yeah ok u dont no a frag and a couple pulls of the trigger couldve taken them out so idk wtf you talking about and then his only kill was against a german that surrendered and he let germans go upstairs nd kill his friends bc he was too much of a pussy to go after them so face the facts uphams a pussy and yeah i woulda killed the german too but her was the bitch to convince them to let him go in the first place so shut up
stlaxer23 4 months ago
@stlaxer23 It's a fucking war, it's not like walking into the middle school like you do everyday, it's dramatic, traumatic, and has a huge physiological effect.
