In this country, Catholic prelates and / or Protestant ministers should not try to instruct their church members on how to vote. It' s called separation of church and state. Every Christian has his own conscience, and the Right to Life issue is not the only issue. A vote for Bush was also a vote for his foreign policy in Iraq and for his mismanagement of of the economy. Following this bishop's one-dimensional instruction would reduce Catholics to a state of idiocy.

This bishop has every right to make his personal opinion heard. He was simply stating the Church's position on protection of the most innocent of life. I agree that voters should also weigh their beliefs on social justice and the death penalty, but the issue of abortion has to take precedent over these other issues. How can we have social justice in a society that's willing to end the lives of the unborn babies? How can we justify protecting the lives of us sinners when we kill the unborn?

Don't be ridiculous, of course the lives of innocent Iraqis matter. That's why when a dictator, Saddam Huessein, is commiting genocide it is necessary to step in and put a stop to his power. You would have people believe that there is a paradox in thinking, when really there is none. When you take a stand for protecting the lives of the innocent there generally is not a lot of confusion.

I don't think that women who choose to have abortions are evil, nor do they deserve to be castigated, however, I think as a society we have come to think of abortion as the easy solution. Sometimes the easiest solution isn't always the best solution, especially when you consider that there are many thousands of couples who would adopt those children.

Because war can be just or unjust and there can be differeing opinions on this matter. War is not inherently evil, abortion is. Abortion is evil and is never not evil. You can be a Catholic in good standing if you support or oppose the war. If you support abortion, you cannot be a Catholic in good standing.

I know this is late, but to make the statement "I'm Catholic and I vote for Obama" is like saying "I'm Catholic and I worship Budda"

It is similar because both actions automatically excommunicates you from being a Catholic.

Read your catechism for more info, it clearly states that if you support the procurement of an abortion, you excommunicate yourself from being Catholic.

I hope you realize this soon, if not already, and go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation if you really did vote for Obama
