The silly part is, in the remake, it's easier to get through the maze because you have mouse control and the speed is automatically set to slow on that screen, -but-, trying to go through the maze kills you, so you have to solve the puzzle in a different way. It's rather silly, really.

Presumably, you're meant to know about the berries by reading the parts where they're described as 'pungent' and 'odiferous'. Generally, plants like that are believed to taste as bad- er, strongly as they smell, hence why they're avoided by the animals. Still a non-intuitive puzzle, due to the word parser, but the clues are there.

Personally, I think Kiko should poke Rocket Jockey McGee with a sharp stick, bring him in off his doorstep and set him to reading some of these lines! OMINOUS!

Kiko, are you aware of the sq2 remake by infamous adventures? It looks quite solid and was even fully voiced, so it's just like sq1 vga or sq4. Though I don't expect you to switch your LP to that version of the game, I just recommend you to try it.

It is not so unintuitive... you see the little fellow pick the berries and then doing something with himself before the swamp. Actually, I havent played the game in ages, but I wonder if you can look at the creature while it is doing it stuff. If so, it probably tells you that it is rubbing itself with berries.
