While I love Hana Barbera's cartoons and this is excellent, I like the original version ("Peace on Earth") a little better because of its focus on how the different groups of people were always fighting and could never get along...this one seems more anti-nuclear war than anything.
guys! i need lyrics of this song! i'll show you where i need!! Hark! The Herald Angels sing Glory to the (??) king! Peace on Earth, good will to men Peace on Earth, (??) Joyfull all ye creatures sing: He (?????????????) Turn the world and give me star(is that right??) Peace on Earth, forever Lord(right?) Hark our praise we sing again(right??) Peace on Earth, good will to men Joyfull all ye creatures sing Glory to the (??) king (.....) Peace on Earth good will to men
@KitsunReichan I'll help you out the best I can: Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the Lord our King. Peace on Earth, goodwill to men, peace on earth shall reign again. Joyful all ye creatures be: He at last the world did free, to the world He did restore, peace on Earth forever more. Hark our praise we sing again, peace on Earth goodwill to men. Joyful all ye creatures sing, glory to the Lord our King. Hark our praise we sing again, peace on earth goodwill to men.
In the beginning it's pretty much the same as the 1939 peace on earth version. Thus I thought It's a simple remake. But then the "update" came: Hiroshima and Nagasaki...
The interesting thing abou this and 'Peace On Earth' is the climate in which they were made. 'Peace on Earth' was made in the wake of the beginning of WW2 but describes WW1 and 'Good Will To Men' was made in the aftermath of WW2, Korea and the beginning of the Atomic Age and the message is the same.
So does this mean that one day these animals will encounter another group that found the Quran(Koran) and start the whole religious warfare all over again?
@BlackTemplar43 Compared to the general state of MGM's cartoons during the CinemaScope era, this really is epic--only three years before Huckleberry Hound, Hanna & Barbera's last brush with Disney-level animation proved that they hadn't lost their touch. Even now those delta-wing bombers and missiles are chilling. The only thing missing, as Michael Barrier pointed out about "Peace On Earth", are civilian casualties. That would have really socked it home.
@moogyboy6 I'm actually surprised that H&B didn't get dragged before the HUAC for promoting pacifism; in the '50s I imagine anyone critical of America's military might would've been branded a Communist sympathizer.
Peace on Earth was made before WWII, this was made after, and with Nukes in mind. If we make something new to get a similar point across, I don't know how we'd do it, but I think it needs to be done, and it needs to be better than both shorts combined. I think that if we did, though, it'd have something to do with terrorism and the stupid responses it's had in the last decade.
Just to make this clear: The nuclear holocaust obliterated every single man from the face of the earth, but these animals simply crawled out of their holes like nothing happened? Despite that they seem to be completely unaffected by the initial blast, they'd either starve to death because everything on the surface was burned to crisp or die from radiation sickness. I know that this was the time when Russia got the nuke, but the original made far more sense than this one.
Not only did Peace on Earth drive the message home better, it also left mostly ambiguous with all issues, including religion. This one just had to go out of the way to make that religion Christianity, and they failed. If anything, this remake does a better job at showing how brainwashed religious people are by depicting the kids singing a religious song and not really knowing a thing about it.
Legacy of the Cold War I'm afraid - if the CIA could get their hands into a pacifist movie to convey a message that is obviously oppose to the Communists, which of course defeats the whole exercise of the cartoon, No wonder humanity is so fucked up.
@Jakegothicsnake i know the bible and just because im not particularly christian doesnt mean i dont respect it. i hope youre not one of those people who screeches out GOD BLESS or PUT JESUS IN FRONT OF THEE or IF YOU LIKE BLCK SABBATH YOULL PERISH IN ETERNAL FIRE.
@cartoonviolencerocks If you're looking for fundamentalist, puritanical, bible thumpers, you can relax. I'm cool. I don't think being a Black Sabbath fan is enough to merit eternal damnation. ;)
@cartoonviolencerocks Jesus said "You heard it was said "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" BUT I say to you, turn the other cheek.... he didn't agree with the phrase. I haaaate when people misquote that part.
Jesus didn't agree with the word of God? He expressed what it was: God reaching out to his people where they were at the time. It was a limitation on violence, not a prescription for violence. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it.
I see there is much greater influence from WWII than in Peace on Earth; ironically released before the worst war in history. I prefer the original, but this is good too.
I really want to know how carnivores and omnivores fit into this utopia where nothing is killed.

Not as effective as the original, IMHO, with the soldier getting shot and sinking into the mud.
