  • WOW...wish I could have seen him live...we listened to Nostradomus in a high school class, but dang it, wish I would have had the foresight to go to a concert, then again, I was in DALLAS, who is a hard to reach audience for true talent.

  • Al Stewart, un maestro de la música; Música con mensaje, a mí también me gusta mucho. Creo que tengo todos sus albumes. Otro saludito desde España. Greetings from Spain.

  • Me encanta la música de éste hombre desde siempre, un saludito desde España.

  • awesome,...timeless tune,...sound sucks

  • @childof1988 I think the same

  • @childof1988 Suppose not a lot of people are not into Al Stewart's music or like it.

  • @NWB1989 i'm a big fan and have been for years......went to his concert in newport centre when he promoted this album, i have it signed by all the band, met them all in the cafeterier..ha ha...he was very humble that we were big fans....peter white is one of my favorite guitar players....rock on

  • I saw Al for the first time at a small venue in London in1999 (?) but he was solo. It was cosy and personal but nothing beats a full band AND an orchestra to boot. His songs exude drama and nothing less than a full accompaniment can do justice.

  • Not exactly a testosterone charged musician.

  • G R E A T

  • I'm going to see him for about the 25th time in March of 2011. For the past 35 years he's been getting nothing but better and better. Check his website for tour dates. The man never stops!

  • @jatras I too am hoping to see him in Harrisburg, PA in March for the FIRST time. I love Al !

  • @kittybunnyface Might see you there! I'll be weaing a maroon shirt with Al on it! Say hi.

  • Is there a DVD of this concert?

  • I came to Canada as a student from Australia (being a huge Al fan) just after this album came out. The FIRST thing on TV I saw was the MTV clip for this song and announcing his tour.... the next day I drove 400km through snow (for the first time) to see Al play in Kitchener ON. The happiest day of my life...almost.... would love to see the video clip again.. it was black /white and rather good!

  • GORGEOUS SONG!!!!!!

  • One of Al's obscure songs but never the less a classic ! Just happen to like Al's aproach tohis singer/songwriter talents . He has produced some classics over the years .

  • The greatest singer - songwriter of the 20th century, period.

  • @childof1988 il buy that

  • @childof1988 Amen to that.

  • Talent isn't always well known :)

  • epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AL, I love your music, reminds me so much of a past that I all too often push out of my mind due to such demanding days as we live in now. thank you so much.

  • I TOTALLY agree that Al is one of the most over-looked, underrated musicians out there. He is fantastic.

  • @MikeK728 I agree he is on the very top of my list of performers to see live I hope he comes to Australia some day soon.

  • I've met Steve Recker great guy, and an amazing guitarist!!

  • i saw this band...on this tour...minus the orchestra...1988...just after this album came out...they were supposed to play one set for a festival in denver...when another act had to pull out, they just added another set...played for about 2 hours..took a break, then played another 2 hours. a lot of songs...then after, they stood around and signed autographs...peter white, robin lamble, al ...very cool guys

  • he can certainly paint pictures with his songs. I always thought roads to Moscow was some fantastic stuff.Still remember seeing he and robin and peter doing an acoustic version of trespasser at a pub. When those three started playing it was mesmerizing.

  • I was at that concert and it was great!

  • Totally amazing.......

  • theres still a few of us black shirts about

  • Where can i get rare Al early videos?

  • There's a medley of this and Constantinople on the new Al Stewart with Dave Nachmanoff live CD "Uncorked". Very good and Dave does a good job of doing the bass line, lead, and rhythm.

  • Thanks for sharing, Yuki... Love it, like most of Al's stuff. It's a shame he's so underappreciated; more than likely because he was about music and not about stardom.

  • You are so correct, PMC. Al is an unappreciated genius. His songs are unique and compelling. Thank God, today he is still writing amazing songs and is at the top of his game. With lead guitarist Dave Nachmanoff, a true oasis of sound emanates from their guitars. And Al's voice remains smooth. His songs never fail to lift me from dreary moods!

  • BRAVO!!!!!

  • Al is timeless because he never courted image, stardom or celebrity status, such destructive anti qualities that have levelled many artists.

He just got on with writing fantastic songs that people will listen to long long after he has gone.

  • Yeah, well his lack of image is what makes him so freaking hard for me to draw.

  • I love orchestras! I wonder is this song like this on an album. I didn't even know Al Stewart was recording in the 80s. This is about ten years after "The Year of the Cat", so I guess he'd be in his late 40s here. Beautiful arrangement.

  • This is on the album of the same title - Last Days Of The Century. It was an excellent album, and he's put out the occasional album every few years since then - Rhymes in Rooms (1992), Famous Last Words (1993), Between the Wars (1995), Down in the Cellar (2000), A Beach Full of Shells (2005), Sparks of Ancient Light (2008) - each one worth a listen. ^_^

  • Go Al, GO ! Luved ya at McCabes! You too Laurence!

  • Most underated artist in the world....listen to almost lucy...best record ever wrote by anyone

  • Great album too. One of his best.

  • is it just me or were there a lot of kids wuth lighters there, hmmmm waynes world springs to mind....

  • Best singer songwriter ever!! Bar none.

  • Oh yes, he is. I saw (an listened to) him 21st Okt.´08 in Germany.

A Pity, that he don´t make fantastic hymns like this anymore.

  • Al Stewart is a great talent.

  • wow.....just....WOW! Not many like Al Stewart around anymore sadly, storytelling in song isn't as prevalent as it once was. The man is a gift to music lovers.

  • Too bad we don't get to see Al Stewart backed by such a team often in this new century. Still, as a duo or as a solo act he's a superior entertainer always worth more than the price of admission.

  • Is David Sanborne the sax player in this video?

  • Dave Camp is the sax player. I emailed him and he said that he is playing a tenor sax in this video. He is not paying with Al at the present time, but keeps in touch with him.

  • That looks expensive

  • Al Stewart is truly one of the greatest songwriter/singers of the last 35 years. As an added bonus, you can learn a lot of useful history from the lyrics. Actually used one of his songs for a theme paper in college, got an "A" !

  • Cranez-your exactly right-Al Stewart is one of the greatest song writers!!! His lyrics are the best...I love his storytelling!! I'm going to see him in concert this month at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano...really looking forward to that.

  • Century, retard. A time span of one hundred years, comprised of 365 days, 366 days every 4 years.

He writes historical songs might be a simpler explaination.

  • clearly you are not very informed about Al Stewart... maybe you shouldn't post on things you don't know what you are talking about.

  • What's an obvious idiot like "chikifree" doing on an Al Steward page?

  • this guy probably got more puss than whats in all your dirty magazines combined

  • Al Stewart is one of my favourite songwriters. The albums Past, Present and Future and Modern Times are still 2 of my favourites.

  • I would add to that list Year Of The Cat, Time Passages, and, believe it or not, two of his more recent works - Famous Last Words and Beach Full Of Shells.

  • Have you heard Orange?

  • Al Stewart belongs in the Rockin' Roll Hall of Fame.

  • I havw the albim on cassette and CD... I went through several copies of LDOTC on cassette... When it surficed on CD I snapped it up... I also have his autograph.... Cool!

  • Love the song. Love Al Stewart.

Two guestions: 1) Was that David Sanborn on sax? 2) How the hell did Al afford so many musicians? I mean, I love Al, been a fan for 30 years, but that was a one-off, right?

  • Maybe somebody funded it.

  • No, the sax player is Dave Camp. Extremely talented musician. Kind of dropped out of sight - Last I heard he was teaching somewhere

  • Alistair Stewart is my absolute favorite musician. He's this intellectual folkie/rocker. Peter is astounding on the piano and guitar, also. I tried to meet him after a concert, but he got "sick". Dangit!!

  • Al got "sick" after a concert in Albuquerque, too. I was disappointed not being able to meet him. He's my favorite and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone (at least on the internet). A.S. lovers are few and far between in our sheeple world of suburbia. Maybe, I'll catch him again before he retires.

  • I'm pretty new to Al Stewart - Doesn't seem to be that big over here in the UK but from what I 've heard he was big in the US back in the 70s/80s - Like most of his songs - reminds of Mark Knophler - the talent, the sound and the way his songs tell a story

  • I think this video was shot in Belgium during the LDOTC tour. Backed by an orchestra, it is a fantastic version of Last Days of the Century (LDOTC). Al Stewart is one of our finest musicians and is vastly underrated. Look for a new Al-bum in late Spring or Summer 2008. Also, check out A Beach Full of Shells (2005), if you have not done so already. You won't be disappointed.

  • Al is a God and Peter White is his prophet on earth! Seen them both twice - amazing! Need another Al/Peter fix !

  • Al! Al! Al! I'm going to see him next week at the Ram's Head! I love Al!

  • Brilliant The first ever song i saw Al perform live In Newport Leisure Centre 1989ish Wonderful memories One of the best

  • Fantastic! Very rare video and thank you for sharing it.yukiyuki33

  • This is the first time I heard this song, and I'm blown away. Damn, Al deserved much more radio play time. How can he not be seen as a music genius. The radio stations' stupidity became our loss.

Thank you so much for sharing this incredible song.

  • The first part with the orchestra section isn't actually LDOTC. That's the first song on the album called 'Introduction'.

  • How did this song not get air time???? Al is amazing! Saw him live probably about 10 times. What an incredible singer/songwriter!

  • Al is still the best songwriter/performer & this song, & "On The Border" are my favorites! Saw him in Texas for "Year of the Cat" tour... muy excellente amigos!

  • The zeneth of Zen. Al Stewart is a nechromancer of the muscical stage.

  • This was Al's last appeal to the "Rock" era. The album wasn't played very much but had some interesting tunes. This is the title track. On the album was a gem "Fresh Out of Law school, he has a license to steal". Check it out!

  • The single most underrated singer songwriter ever! He doesn't get his props these days. What an incredible performer & writer he is!

  • Al just doesn't get his props. I agree. What a tremendous talent he is.

  • I agree that such talent from the 20th century gets little mention now

  • Steve Recker is the most amazing guitar player and has tone second to none. His Jazz record fun in old clothes is one of my all time favorite guitar records.

  • Nice to know that other people appreciate the most under-rated singer-songwriter Britain has ever produced. If you can ,try getting hold of a copy of "Orange",it is a truly wonderful album(as are all his albums)

  • Thank you richardisenior for the info on "Orange" What music, what muscians. Thank you Al for sharing your genius with the world. Al, come to our tiny Island of Kauai, HI before it is gone the way of all tourist spots. See "Discover kauai" on youtube. Now that I live in hawaii, I can't see Al Stewart perform. Recently he was in Tahoe, Cal. How I wish I were there!!! Thanks again for mentioning "Orange"

  • Orange is among my greatest all time favorite albums. At last there is some more footage on the Tube besides Year of the Cat. Gotta say, I am a little over that one, particularly when there is so much other far more worthy material of Al's around.

  • What d'y'mean, 'at last?' Aren't you forgetting the five-dozen On The Borders around too? =P

  • Tori Amos sang it with him on the record, I love it !

  • It's always great to come on here and realise that other people feel the same about Al. The best singer/songwriter of all time. Thanks to yuki for posting this clip.

  • Al Stewart is the greatest lyricist in the history of civilization. Period.

  • I second that thought!

  • Amen. Who else can write about Ernst Roehm and make it completely captivating? The man is brilliant. His lyrics are pure poetry,

  • Al is a genius. I'm probably breaking a rule here - but there is a Yahoo Group dedicated to Al where there are some wonderful discussions. It's called AlStewartFriends. Check it out!

  • Surrounded by all the techno, gizmo, whiz, bang of todays music, its so nice and refreshing to hear Al Stewart. The man is a pure and gifted singer song writer

  • Al and Peter are like a great marriage. Each one is better because of the other. No better songwriter snd no better guitar player.

  • Fantastic song... Tori Amos used to sing it with him on the original version.

  • it is no exaggeration to say that al is the greatest musical mind ever to draw breath

  • thanks for the post.Takes me down memory lane.

  • Bravo! good singer.. loved the saxaphone. still as good today! u dont see that much... 3 TO COMMENT!!!

  • what concert was this please? Has anyone have the MTV film clip of the same song? cheers

  • awesome!
