I know how this happens. if you put hot tea in cold glass it breaks. Same way if you put cold glass even under tap water it breaks in to hundred pieces even without touching it. I have seen it when by mistake my husband's mother did this.

How did you think that could work? If you want to cut the bottle it is actually really easy to do. Get a glass cutter and lightly score a line into the class where you want to make the cut. Then slowly pour scalding hot water over the score to heat it. Then run cold water over it. If done properly you will hear it crack and it may even seperate on the first try. This method will provide the cleanest cut possible.
