This is my all time favorite NFL Today on CBS theme. This was back when football was football - I really miss the 1970s for both pro football and also pop music
xxchinoolxx, you could not have said it better. lol, the players are fatter, and uni's like the bengles look like circus stuff, you are right on. and even though at the time, we didn't like astro turf, now I miss it. I miss the steelers astro turf, I miss the oilers astro turf, the philly astro turf and the new "turf" just looks even more fake. either have real grass, or just use the old turf. the new fake stuff just looks kind of bad on tv. especially indoors. the 70's RULED, music, movies, etc
Fitting that the opening was college football. In the 1970's, that was where we first heard about the late Saturday afternoon games. The first that most people saw of the 1983 Stanford / Cal lateral play was the next day on the NFL Today.
CBS was and still will always be a leader in broadcasting the NFL. Heck, they even were the first global network to show a football game in HD 20 years after this intro was made when CBS got the NFL rights again.
You are absolutely right!.....I also agree with you 100%...On 17 Jan 1971,I became an NFL & Dallas fan following their SB V loss to the Colts 16-13. I remember the strikes of 1974, 1982 and 1986. Not fun
Is that current day referee Ed Hochuli at 0:31 signaling touchdown?
Also - I love this video and the music! It takes me back to my childhood (this video was live when I was in kindergarten); the music ("Horizontal Hold" by Jack Trombey) reminds me of H.S. basketball days, when one of the opposing school's pep band would play this song as their team entered the gym.

@neneshubby you are right of course. I'll never, ever forget a simpsons episode where the germans took over the nuc plant, and this arnold swartzenegger blond german dude says "DE sevendies are OVER!" sometimes all the nostalgia is misplaced. today's nfl is great except for all the new rules, but it's still exciting and the best sport period in the world, unless you live in brazil and they win the world cup or something
This really feels great to reminisce the 1970's as this was a fantastic era for me! I see Brent Musburger a Senior Citizen on ESPN/ABC in comparison b4 being fired from CBS. CBS did a fine job in covering the NFC until the end of 1993. It's a classic!
@oneputtsteven Wang's name soon became another slang word for penis, and I think that destroyed the business. The same thing happened to the name Dick, which no babies are getting named these days.
@thimoneus - Not at all the cause of their downfall - not even close. Even in those days, Wang was one of those slang terms and we did snicker at it sometimes. However, you did see adverts everywhere in magazines, TV and billboards - that you didn't really think about it as a funny name after a while. They were always associated as business computing, similar to IBM.
One of the great all-time NFL tv themes. Kudos to all of you who have posted these old school NFL tv intros, games, and shows! I could watch this "old school stuff" all day long. At least ESPN shows old college/pro games from the 60's,70's,80's, and early 90's on ESPN classics. Love the clip of Walter Payton leaping into the endzone. That was one of his trademark plays when his team was near the goal line.
Hey: That was not John Elway at 0:19; it was Craig Morton, former Dallas Cowboy QB who quarterbacked Denver in the 1977 season; he wore that uniform before Elway later in the 1980s. The clip was from the 1978 Superbowl in New Orleans where Dallas' Harvey Martin was hitting Morton. Dallas won 27-10. The clip is legit; I remember seeing this as a kid back in the day.
The NFL today sucks royally because it's all about money. Players are fatter, uniforms on most teams looks like something out of sesame street circus. Astroturf playing surfaces are gone. Even the commercials suck.....I hate today's NFL altogether. The 1970s RULED
@xxchinookxx I grew up on this era, love it, but take off the nostalgia glasses. People were saying "it's all about the money today" in the 1970s, too. On reshowings of original broadcasts, you can see how much slower & less athletic the play was. And that 1960s & 1970s artificial turf was a thin carpet with horrid seams over cement. On hot days, players feet were literally cooked through their shoes. On regular days, it just broke bodies. There's a reason teams have grass or good fake grass now
@xxchinookxx Don't forget that today's NFL is the No Fun League. We've got to protect those quarterbacks ... We can have any vicious hits. BS! The real men were right here playing in the NFL in the 1970s and early 80s. Players back then played with injuries and played with torn, bloody uniforms out in the cold. Now, a player will not play because of a jammed finger. I've turned off the NFL. It sucks!
@xxchinookxx I agree with your opinion on the 70s but since when was it not about money? The only complaint I have with todays standards is the pussy restrains and regulations the NFL has currently and the obvious fact there is a chance there won't BE an NFL next season is also a fault.
@xxchinookxx counter example miracle @ the Meadowlands 2 (2010) Way more exciting of a game. Less injuries and longer careers due to not playing on astroturf. In the 70s only Dallas, Minnesota, LA (Rams for those idiots that don't know LA only had 1 team in those times), Pittsburgh, Oakland, Denver, KC, San Diego, Miami, New England, Houston had a chance at winning depending on the year. Now it is a crap shoot of 15 teams every year. And the unknown team that sneaks up in the standings
xxchinookxx, the teams you listed are right, but denver? kc? san diego, new england? in the 70's? Kc maybe had a few good years early but the rest were not every year playoff teams. only the rams, oakland, minnesota, dallas and pittsburg and maybe houston were the regulars.
The rams were in it, as you probably know, every year, year after year, and always got beat in the playoffs, to my horrible disappointment. one year they would beat dallas, but loose to minnesota, then visa versa, on and on
@fredgarv79 think u were talking to me. Denver's orange crush went to the super bowl. KC won one. 76 Patriots were favorites to win but upset and cheated by Oakland and refs. Rams were always in the playoffs. Therefore they had a chance in the 70's/
I was in 6th grade when they used this open and I was just starting to get into the NFL. I knew when it would come on every Sunday and would drop whatever I was doing to watch it. I loved the music and football footage. It got me pumped up and I'd immediately go outside and play football--Luv it!!
...and Brent Musberger is STILL announcing!! He must have done play by play for the Roman Gladiators! He's one of those guys who's gonna die at the mic. "Pass over the middle to the Tight-End and......" Thump! Then the color-commentator comes on and says, "Ladies and Gentlemen--Brent Musberger is dead." He's like most of our politicians in Washington--work until you're senile or die--whichever comes first.
One of my favorite TV sports themes. CBS has just about all of them (NBA late '80s, college football early 90's)
This is from November 12, 1978.

oh no.i think danny white is one of the most underrated qb's in nfl history! let's not forget he also punted. actually i am a bears fan and i hate the packers! i can't wait till this season starts. who's your team?
I am a huge Chicago White Sox fan and would've been a Chicago Cardinals fan (my mom is from that neighborhood), so I became a Packers fan. However, I'm constantly fighting to bring a 2nd team back to Chicago.
I don't like the Cubs or Bears...boo.
However, I admit to being a fan of Danny White and the Cowboys when I was very young, loved that team.
how could you have been a cards fan? they left chicago before you were born. you know they were the racine avenue cardinals? they used hand me down marroon jerseys from the university of chicago. they were horrible. the bears were in the samr division. they played each other 2 times a year.
i believe i said "would've been" a Cards fan...please see below. Yes, I know everything about them. They were in the same conference with the Bears until 1950, then they split up and played only once a year for the final 10 years in CHI.
Look, my mom was very young but she was alive when they beat the Eagles and won it all in 1947. We don't support the Bears here, and if the Sox ever move...we ain't supporting the Flubs either.
I know it sounds crazy but my Aunt taught Danny White in the 3rd grade. She was also a classmate of his Dad (Whizzer White) who later went to the U.S. Supreme Court. Small World..........
Yeah, she was a grand lady. She graduated from Arizona State (Normal School) Teacher's college back then in 1928........she passed away in 1993 at the age of 86........Danny White went to Arizona State and she was really a big Danny White #11 fan........memories! He gave her a game ball once. My cousins in Arizona have it.
Yeah, truth2masses......I know what you mean. I'm 59.....class of 1969 (just went to my 40th) and boy THOSE days aren't coming back. I was a cornerback.....and I loved the "bump & run" days. Something else that's NOT coming back. FIVE YARD RULE! CMON REF!!!! I had a good close-line about the time Sandy Koufax retired. Now I DO feel old(er)....:-O
Wow - and you got the WHOLE opening including sponsors. Awesome. Remember Wang computers? We had them in our high school. Thanks for saving this - great memories.
I thought that looked familiar, that's exactly who it was. As a Vikings fan, I've seen that highlight before but being born in 71, far too young to remember that game (fortunately.)
Jayne kennedey got into hot water as her cousin played for eagles and prior to 79 playoff game with Bucs, kennedey did a segment where she dined with a couple of the bucs players, she was flirting heavily with the Bucs, she was a hottie.
I recall in 1977, each week the Jimmy the greek segment would be sponsored by this really sexy muriel cigar add which would show the incredibly beautiful Susan Anton slobber all over this handsome cigar smoking cowboy.
They used to spend the first few minutes of many shows on college FB. They'd show some highlights, then give their top 10. Back then, there was no show that really discussed college FB and showed a lot of highlights. There was no ESPN. Only ABC did weekly games so you got highlights from another game only if a game ended early. ABC had a Sunday collge FB highlight show, but it showed only 3 games and sometimes had a strange mix (i.e. USC-Alabama, Michigan-Penn State...Brown-Dartmouth).
There was a chainsaw commercial back then that also used the same music as the NFL Today during this time period.I believe it was POULAN chainsawa.Anyone else remember? I was only 5 at the time.
You are not imagining things. Poulan chainsaws did use that same music on some commercials.. I was about 10 or 12 at the time. In fact, when I saw their first commercial with that music all I could think was "hey, what are they doing using the music from the NFL TODAY!!" It's amazing the fun stuff you can learn and find right here on the 'ol You Tube !
This infamous NFL Today theme (first used during the 1976 NFL season and on Super Bowl X) was composed and conducted by Jack Trombey for De Wolfe Music. The title is known as "Horizontal Hold."
...brought to you by Wang, making computers as big as your car. Funny. I can't tell you how many times I've reached for the great taste of a piss warm Tuborg Gold after a hard day on the job...good grief, Charlie Brown.
I know Jayne Kennedy also was on the CBS NFL telecasts at that time but i thought she was the Jim Grey/Pam Oliver of her day eg sideline reporting at big games/shared 'execuslive' interviews w/ Phyllis?
She left the show for a time. I can't remember if it was a contract dispute or what. She came back in the early 80's and that's when there she took materinity leave. Sometime around in there, she also married the executive who ran KFC who later become Governor of Kentucky.
For all you NFL heads, a much better theme song can be found if you type in 1973 NBC football. If you like the CBS stuff, you'll love the old NBC tune.
love that theme. jayne kennedy kinda invented hot chicks talking about football. oh and who was buying computers in 1978??, especially called WANG lol =)
Agreed. Despite later getting stuck up later in his carrer, Musmberger is still the best NFL studio host of all time. While The Gumbels(both Greg & Byrant)and Costats(pardon spelling) were/are excellent hosts too, at his peak no body was as sharp and attention grabbing then the NFL's first full time pre game anchor Brent.
Absolutely the best intro of ALL TIME. Better than Monday night by a smidge. Plus what sponsors, Danish Kings and Wang!!! CBS needs to go back Old School.
The voice of CBS Sports for all those years was Don Ferguson. I remember on Christmas Eve 1989, they showed him on camera. I think his final assignment for CBS was Super Bowl XXVI.
Probably recorded over a porno

I'm typing this message on my Wang computer enjoying a tasty Tuborg Gold malt beverage (The golden beer of Danish Kings, he he).
...This is clearly the best NFL intro EVER for two reasons:
* That sack on Craig Morton by Randy White @0:18 with accompanying drums in the background
* The cleat on Roger Staubach's back @0:25
Doesn't...Get...Any...Better!

how could you have been a cards fan? they left chicago before you were born. you know they were the racine avenue cardinals? they used hand me down marroon jerseys from the university of chicago. they were horrible. the bears were in the samr division. they played each other 2 times a year.
truth2masses 2 years ago
i believe i said "would've been" a Cards fan...please see below.
Just the way it is.

I know it sounds crazy but my Aunt taught Danny White in the 3rd grade. She was also a classmate of his Dad (Whizzer White) who later went to the U.S. Supreme Court. Small World..........
5dave1 2 years ago
wow! talk to your aunt and treasure the stories she tells you. i like old sports stories.
truth2masses 2 years ago
Yeah, she was a grand lady. She graduated from Arizona State (Normal School) Teacher's college back then in 1928........she passed away in 1993 at the age of 86........Danny White went to Arizona State and she was really a big Danny White #11 fan........memories! He gave her a game ball once. My cousins in Arizona have it.

my condolences. i was gonna say, danny white was a sun devil too.i miss the old days of the NFL.

Were do people find this stuff. I remember this theme so well. I am a big Vikings fan a loved the Fran Tarkenton part of the opening.
atl9937 3 years ago
what happened to: "ITS HOT OUT THERE, SO LETS BLOW EM OFF THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE !!!" then the intro would start. priceless.
countdown2xstacy 3 years ago
Who is the Oakland Raider running with the ball at around 33 seconds?
mustwinder 3 years ago
i believe that was old man willie brown #24 running back a fran tarkenton pick for a score in the 1977 super bowl. 00:33
countdown2xstacy 3 years ago
I thought that looked familiar, that's exactly who it was. As a Vikings fan, I've seen that highlight before but being born in 71, far too young to remember that game (fortunately.)
mustwinder 3 years ago
@countdown2xstacy I recognize that clip from ABC's '78 Monday Night Football open.

Jayne kennedey got into hot water as her cousin played for eagles and prior to 79 playoff game with Bucs, kennedey did a segment where she dined with a couple of the bucs players, she was flirting heavily with the Bucs, she was a hottie.

I recall in 1977, each week the Jimmy the greek segment would be sponsored by this really sexy muriel cigar add which would show the incredibly beautiful Susan Anton slobber all over this handsome cigar smoking cowboy.
lakeshow3 3 years ago
Wow! Did Susan Anton replace Edie Adams.....Edie loved her stogies from Ernie Kovacs before she became the Muriel Cigar Girl of the 1960s.

why is he giving college scores?
damienbaits 3 years ago
They used to spend the first few minutes of many shows on college FB. They'd show some highlights, then give their top 10. Back then, there was no show that really discussed college FB and showed a lot of highlights. There was no ESPN. Only ABC did weekly games so you got highlights from another game only if a game ended early. ABC had a Sunday collge FB highlight show, but it showed only 3 games and sometimes had a strange mix (i.e. USC-Alabama, Michigan-Penn State...Brown-Dartmouth).

In the late 70's, I use to run to the television when the NFL Today would come on. It was a great pregame show. Jane Kennedy was
beautiful.

There was a chainsaw commercial back then that also used the same music as the NFL Today during this time period.I believe it was POULAN chainsawa.Anyone else remember? I was only 5 at the time.
smoothie6ft3 3 years ago
You are not imagining things. Poulan chainsaws did use that same music on some commercials.. I was about 10 or 12 at the time. In fact, when I saw their first commercial with that music all I could think was "hey, what are they doing using the music from the NFL TODAY!!" It's amazing the fun stuff you can learn and find right here on the 'ol You Tube !

@joebradio This just in...
This infamous NFL Today theme (first used during the 1976 NFL season and on Super Bowl X) was composed and conducted by Jack Trombey for De Wolfe Music. The title is known as "Horizontal Hold."

Dumb question: Where was Phyllis George in 1978?
I know Jayne Kennedy also was on the CBS NFL telecasts at that time but i thought she was the Jim Grey/Pam Oliver of her day eg sideline reporting at big games/shared 'execuslive' interviews w/ Phyllis?
I was in 1st grade around 1978 lol.
USAGiant 4 years ago
I believe Phyllis George was on maternity leave at the time.
SuperBowlExpert 4 years ago
She left the show for a time. I can't remember if it was a contract dispute or what. She came back in the early 80's and that's when there she took materinity leave. Sometime around in there, she also married the executive who ran KFC who later become Governor of Kentucky.
joebradio 3 years ago
OH Ok. Thanks Joe for the info. I was 5-6 years old in 1978, so sorry if i sound dumb lol. I did start understanding the NFL till the 1983-84 season.

For all you NFL heads, a much better theme song can be found if you type in 1973 NBC football. If you like the CBS stuff, you'll love the old NBC tune.

The NFL Today was the best pre-game show of all-time. It captured pro football at a time when the sport was truly exciting to watch.
MOST550 4 years ago 2
USAGiant 4 years ago
A truly nostalgic theme song, I miss pre-game shows like this

The voice of CBS Sports for all those years was Don Ferguson. I remember on Christmas Eve 1989, they showed him on camera. I think his final assignment for CBS was Super Bowl XXVI.
