  • I like this version!

  • WALLACE!

  • Miles himself played So What faster, faster and even more faster... so STFU if you say it's too fast.

  • Stop The Foolish Utterances? Sacred Trinity of Florida University?

  • @Santi2c Sorry but the original was a cool strut...this is more of a nervous jog. There are far too many horns at once, far too many soloist notes for this song...it just destroys the intimacy and emotion. I can't be the only Miles Davis fan who feels these may be talented musicians but they lost the spirit of the piece.

  • @ajdicks check out miles' 1964 concert at carnegie hall, so what is at least at this tempo. its good to reinterpret pieces.

  • NIce !!

  • hopkins jh played this as their versin, now what

  • great tenor sax!!! love it.

  • Joe Lovano quoted Impressions at 10:20

  • Incredible!!!

  • Big Lovano!

  • sweet.

  • isnt this famous for having only a 2 chord progression?

  • It's modal, based on modes rather than chords. It goes from 16 bars of D Dorian to 8 bars of Eb Dorian then another 8 bars of D Dorian. So I've heard at least.

  • yh, but let's not forget, D Dorian is also C Ionian, E Phrigyan, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian and B Locrian.

So that's a lot of sounds an individual can play over these chords . . . that's why it's special.

    a

  • I actually think it's only only in a because the bassist always plays on the two upstrings, 2 and half steps high, and since it starts off on the 4th(one of the thing that makes it a smidge different) it's actually an A min chord played over the dorian. And quite frankly it doesn't matter if your playing it in g Myxolidian, C Ionian, etc. it's all the exact same notes

(BTW: IF it was D dorian, it would be C Myxolidian etc.)

  • dude, D Dorian is C Ionian . . . and yeah, altho those modes are the same notes, its good to recreate different sounds or colors using these principals. that's what modal jazz is about - modes.

    a

  • dude that's all the same notes

  • Nothing is really happening in the rhythm section...the new music is about interaction...Dave Liebman needs to learn how to communicate a story in his solos...Wallace is just skimming the changes he needs to HIT the chords sometimes....and Joe Lovano...just sounds...bla...

  • cool・・・

  • Woow..to jest to co lubię....Thank you:)

  • the trumpet player has a suit made of my old curtains!

  • who are u somebody from Fashion Police ? :DD

  • huh?

  • u have mentioned some old curtains :) It's a music site :) So I am asking you again the same. :) Get it ? :)

  • Dave Liebman is SO NASTY! MAN He's got o be the deepest thinker when he plays! I love his soul!

  • He's incredibly smart... But without bashing him as a player... the guy needs an attitude adjustment. He's a dick

  • But we are.....

  • hahah nice one :) so true :)

  • @Bobbelden LOL

  • i'm studying this peice in my music class at school, and i have to say, i bloody hated it at first... but it's really grown on me.

  • Ah man, I know exactly what you mean. My jazz combo at school is currently going through with this, and boy did I hate it, but like you mentioned in your own situation, it's grown pretty big on me, haha.

    Kudos to Mr. Davis!

  • wow!!!

  • Liebman plays an Excellent solo.

  • That's my boy from back home on the drums. Tommy Crane.....you making us proud man. If you read this, this is freddy.

  • OK...I'll shut up now! Bob just sent me a nice message explaining the circumstances of the gig. Talk about misreading someone and their video. I've got an appointment for tomorrow to get my foot removed from my mouth.

  • Actually...I should apologize for that last comment. Having well trained jazz masters run the music into the museum will make people hungry for the next wave. You are actually doing the rest of us a favor. Keep "swinging" brothers!

  • Yet another MILES tribute/arrangement/nostalgia party for NYC tourists to "relive" an era they never participated in...but of course I'm "WRONG" because I am neither famous nor American.

  • Yep, I did, and I disagree. His book was badly written, filled with major fact/spelling errors, and such. Jazz is definitively alive, though I agree school can vaccinate what once was vital musicmaking.

  • Actually I think it IS. The NEW standards will be written in places like Iceland, Ghana, and Qatar. The gift of jazz you have given us is precious...BUT its OURS.

  • You must have read Stuart Nicholson's book....

  • ...Kinda wish someone had the balls to stand up and play a less-is-more real minimal solo with unique phrasing, feelings, and nuance... . I am tired of listening to the 'fast and loud' virtuosos only...

  • Maybe it's your turn to lead us into a new era of jazz....

  • yes, yes ,yes...isn't that how miles got to the top in the first place. less is more, bend the note, vary the volume and tempo of the phrasing. the cardinal sin of horn players is to play too fast and loud. everybody in the 50's understood this, why can't we?

  • Bending notes gets terribly annoying too though. Technique is can make or break solos though too.. I just hate scooped notes when it remains constant. These guys don't really have that probably.

  • speak on it

  • Poor Wally. Damned when he sounds like Miles, damned when we doesn't.

  • I believe I saw Tim Ries on sax there ..

  • too bad the upright bass couldn't have been brought out more. probably the recording equipment though. sometimes tough to get those low sounds.

  • does anyone know what notes and fingerings did joe lovano use to play that lick from 10:33-10:37

  • This my second time visiting this performance;this a great live date. .It has so much of Miles spirit in it. I love you Wallace

  • I LOVE MILES DAVIS!!! He is AMAZING!!!

  • is this Wallace Rhoney?

  • yes

  • yes

  • is this wallace roney?

  • I love joe,how could you not ,but I could'nt hear him becaue wallace solo fucked my head up .why can't he get the rec. he deserves is only injustice Miles loved him ,Tony loved him ,Blakey loved him ,Q loves him ,and you guys dfidnt acknoledge his solo.I find that strange.

  • Thanks for the list of solo credits (acknowledgements)at the very beginning of this video.

  • why is ingrid jensen's name on this??

  • she is on the other "So What"...sorry...

  • the bass line at the begining is the best. alot faster than the original by Paul Chambers but still great.

  • Again a great video, thnx for posting.

But the video says: BOB BELDEN BIG BAND May 26 2005.

You wrote: BOB BELDEN BIG BAND "Birdland" May 26, 2004

    Wrong year?

  • Twilight Zone calendar

  • Yeah! I love hearing Liebman and Lovano back to back. They are two of the most important and unique voices in jazz with such different approaches. Great solos!

  • I caught Joe Lovano at the Village Vanguard with his Nonet. He is awesome. Every Bop fan needs to purchase his 52nd Street Theme. One of my favorite Jazz Albums!

Also, Dave Liebman spends much of his time in the Poconos Mountains (PA) and plays at a small local club called the Deer Head Inn. Google it if you are in the area.

  • hi rorbin. keith jarrett also used to play at the deer head... he has recorded an album there a couple of years ago... drummer paul motian included.
