@Santi2c Sorry but the original was a cool strut...this is more of a nervous jog. There are far too many horns at once, far too many soloist notes for this song...it just destroys the intimacy and emotion. I can't be the only Miles Davis fan who feels these may be talented musicians but they lost the spirit of the piece.
It's modal, based on modes rather than chords. It goes from 16 bars of D Dorian to 8 bars of Eb Dorian then another 8 bars of D Dorian. So I've heard at least.
I actually think it's only only in a because the bassist always plays on the two upstrings, 2 and half steps high, and since it starts off on the 4th(one of the thing that makes it a smidge different) it's actually an A min chord played over the dorian. And quite frankly it doesn't matter if your playing it in g Myxolidian, C Ionian, etc. it's all the exact same notes
(BTW: IF it was D dorian, it would be C Myxolidian etc.)
dude, D Dorian is C Ionian . . . and yeah, altho those modes are the same notes, its good to recreate different sounds or colors using these principals. that's what modal jazz is about - modes.
Nothing is really happening in the rhythm section...the new music is about interaction...Dave Liebman needs to learn how to communicate a story in his solos...Wallace is just skimming the changes he needs to HIT the chords sometimes....and Joe Lovano...just sounds...bla...
Ah man, I know exactly what you mean. My jazz combo at school is currently going through with this, and boy did I hate it, but like you mentioned in your own situation, it's grown pretty big on me, haha.
OK...I'll shut up now! Bob just sent me a nice message explaining the circumstances of the gig. Talk about misreading someone and their video. I've got an appointment for tomorrow to get my foot removed from my mouth.
Actually...I should apologize for that last comment. Having well trained jazz masters run the music into the museum will make people hungry for the next wave. You are actually doing the rest of us a favor. Keep "swinging" brothers!
Yet another MILES tribute/arrangement/nostalgia party for NYC tourists to "relive" an era they never participated in...but of course I'm "WRONG" because I am neither famous nor American.
Yep, I did, and I disagree. His book was badly written, filled with major fact/spelling errors, and such. Jazz is definitively alive, though I agree school can vaccinate what once was vital musicmaking.
Actually I think it IS. The NEW standards will be written in places like Iceland, Ghana, and Qatar. The gift of jazz you have given us is precious...BUT its OURS.
...Kinda wish someone had the balls to stand up and play a less-is-more real minimal solo with unique phrasing, feelings, and nuance... . I am tired of listening to the 'fast and loud' virtuosos only...
yes, yes ,yes...isn't that how miles got to the top in the first place. less is more, bend the note, vary the volume and tempo of the phrasing. the cardinal sin of horn players is to play too fast and loud. everybody in the 50's understood this, why can't we?
Bending notes gets terribly annoying too though. Technique is can make or break solos though too.. I just hate scooped notes when it remains constant. These guys don't really have that probably.
I love joe,how could you not ,but I could'nt hear him becaue wallace solo fucked my head up .why can't he get the rec. he deserves is only injustice Miles loved him ,Tony loved him ,Blakey loved him ,Q loves him ,and you guys dfidnt acknoledge his solo.I find that strange.
Yeah! I love hearing Liebman and Lovano back to back. They are two of the most important and unique voices in jazz with such different approaches. Great solos!
I caught Joe Lovano at the Village Vanguard with his Nonet. He is awesome. Every Bop fan needs to purchase his 52nd Street Theme. One of my favorite Jazz Albums!
Also, Dave Liebman spends much of his time in the Poconos Mountains (PA) and plays at a small local club called the Deer Head Inn. Google it if you are in the area.
I like this version!

yh, but let's not forget, D Dorian is also C Ionian, E Phrigyan, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian and B Locrian.
So that's a lot of sounds an individual can play over these chords . . . that's why it's special.
