If Mary was "running the show" as it was reported at that time, then it seems that she should have known the show she was running. She is indeed all over the place, and resembles a red Statue Of Liberty towering over the other two in that big drape. Scherrie was spot on as always, Susaye was, well, Susaye. Didn't they have enough budget to rehearse and reshoot this?
This was on the final Supremes album "Mary, Scherrie & Susaye". Also, I THINK Mary was pregnant with her SECOND child in the clip, her oldest son. She was pregnant with Turkessa on the cover of their 1975 album "The Supremes" which was about a year and a half before this, when Cindy Birdsong was still a member. Could be wrong, though...
Ivyfield- It is because of you that I have discovered this Supreme treasure. This should have been a big hit! Just as good as any other dance cut from that era.
yeah definitly caffeine involved or is a certain dynamic powder.... hehe you can even find it just backstage here...ok i'm the villain this time...but this is definitly not for children...look how wildly they moves...and that s good - i just imagine all the powerful feelings involved when you dance like that...it's full of sensation of freedom...specially in the 2nd part... a must say a more propulsive freedom...this make the difference with early 70s stuff with slower freedom kindofmoves
Well neat video...Scherrie's vocals are well funky, shame about Mary's well SAD dress sense did she borrow that friock from Demis Roussos or cuite Tina Chrales...was she expecting or something...she really should have taken it easy with them Hyper disco steps or at least remembered them...already!!
Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard it before but It's excellent! Yes very frantic and rushed but this is my kind of music! Should have been a classic! Well, it is in my book. Saved to favourites and promptly bought. Thank you.
Love this record, but what are they doing ??? They look like the Three Stooges. They are so out of sync - and their arms and legs just go all over the place. Mary looks like she just gave up and decided to wing it. And who ever told the Supremes to do the Robot !!! Fire the choreographer !!! Two minutes of rehearsal wasn't enough.
This was a club hit. I always liked the Mary/Sherrie/Susaye grouping. Then I loved the Sherrie/Susaye lp PARTNERS. I'll take all 3 or Sherrie and Susuye together. I have't liked Mary's solo albums much. I LOVED Red HOT the song, but the lp it was from--ugh! In the end I wish the post Diana Ross Supremes were still together in any of it's forms. I'm glad DRIVING WHELL made a dent.
There is another take of this song on the album with the eight pictures of the different ladies in the group on the front. I like it better, the music is a little different, and Scherrie really rocks it at the end. Do you have it to upload? Oh, this is one of my desert island top five!
Damn this is funky! I didn't know the new Supremes could get down like this. This is hot. #50 r&b and #85 pop that's a joke. I guess "NO PROMOTION" means "no promotion." The fact this was taped in London and not the states shows how much they were dissed. This should have been a bigger chart topper. Get down girls!!! This is my new jam!!
After buying this album, I just knew this was going to be a Major Hit .
Calls were constantly made to different radio stations, only to be greeted with excuses such as:" We don't have it song ", "Never heard of it" and finally the best excuse of all "'We're waiting to see if it takes across the Country"
How Sad!
This song is the Perfect example that Motown did not t kick The Supremes to the curb.
Motown PROJECTED them into rush hour traffic, going in the opposite direction.
This is still a Great song. What''s so sad is that some Radio Stations had literally thrown The Supremes not to the curb, but into rush hour traffic. When I first heard this song, I knew that it was going to be a major hit. I called many radio stations again and again. One radio station (WQAM) here in Miami continuously said they were waiting to see how this song takes across the country. Why wait,? Start the trend . Other stations claimed they did not have the song. Yeah Right!
This is great! Extrovert, likeable and as funky as hell, I thought the Supremes were really 'in the zone' on their last two albums and this exuberant song deserved a much higher placing than 87 or whatever it was on the Hop 100. I'll never understand it never even being a single in the UK. Even an arguably under-rehearsed Supremes has oodles more personality and fun than so many present-day Auto-tuned dummies: at least The Supremes' robots are meant to be funny. More Motown Magic!
FUNKY! This is my second favorite Supremes single. It came out when I was thirteen and like alot of songs I heard at that age I completely miss-heard a word in the lyric. I am not gonna say what I thought I heard back then (too embarassing), but it occurs at 1:33!
LOL! Mary said that Susaye was young and ambitious[She would sometimes step out of the routine and/or do a little bit extra] and it is so evident here! LOL! I love Miss Greene!
Speaking of Scherrie, I saw her at my job which is Homegoods home store in Woodland Hills, Ca like 2 months ago shopping with her family. A customer told me it was her and I didn't even reconize her. she was very nice and signed an autograph for them. I met her family a week later when they came back. I told them how I was a fan. They were impress and said 1 day they'll bring her back to meet me personally. MotownMaster your a lucky person to actually have 2 famous aunts including Freda Payne.
You do have a cool aunt. I had the pleasure of meeting Scherrie in the eighties. She was so nice and down to earth. She signed all my albums and I felt so comfortable around her. A wonderful talent that truly deserves more that what she got. If she ever comes back here to Miami, I'll be in the Front Row! that fetus must have been bounced more time in her womb on that day than it would have ever been in it's life time, omg Mary stop, sit, drink herbal tea, no dancing for gods sake. lol
i loved this lineup but in the videos i think they were just trying too hard. they should have been a little less frenetic in my opinion. the song is great.
I think this should have been their first single when Sherrie joined the group. But I think Berry Gordy could've cared less about them once Diana left. No matter what they put out, it wouldn't have gotten promoted. This song should've been a hit.
I never liked this lineup. It seemed awkward. Mary was pregnant through most of their videos, and she seemed like a giant compared to the other two, who were much shorter, and it was just awkward.
she was pregnant throughout most of their videos? is that why she has on a huge outfit compared to the others? and yeah she really like a giant compared to them too!
Do you have the take of "Driving Wheel" from the greatest hits album with the pictures of eight of the girls on the front? That's my favorite take of this song, which is my favorite Supremes song, of any of the line ups.
I understand where you're coming from but check out the other groups from '75 to '80... Labelle, The Emotions, Pointers all "loosened up" their choreography - partly because some of the disco stuff was just soooo fast!
@ivyfield -well, exactly. But that's what more-so distinguished The Supremes FROM the other groups. They did something different than the other ones' 'differents'! And it was extreme class, which THESE girls HAD! It's just that by this time, they had been sooo disrespected that they wanted soo much to be noticed for what they were....and even in reviews, it was stated that they came off like the 'shouters' at first. Mary Was Wild in this. But Susaye didn't know the steps always...
Mary always has something to say about Diana being an evil leader, but from the looks of mary and her obcviously more fancy gown, who is the evil lead singer now?
Actually Mary was pregnant with her son Pedro (b.1977), Turkessa was born in 1975. she's clearly under-rehearsed, but then I guess that's only to be expected when 5 months pregnant.
They ALL were if you 'watch' closely! These were NEW routines. They were always learning new routines or adjustments and stuff, and it often left them out of sync, because they never got to 'KNOW' a routine well enough before it changed! TOO many hands in the pot working trying to bring them new ideas and things is the problem! Scherrie was the 'coolest' one about it, and she could be, because she was 'leading'! This was a 'chaotic' time for them.
I believe that is Mary in the middle, pregnant with her first child Turkessa. I know that is Sheree Payne on the left, but I do not recognize that girl on the right. I lost track after Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong left.
that is susaye green, from newbirth..i played trumpet on this song written by stafford floyd and reggie brown, altho other names appear as wtiters. I saw this song being written, arranged and Brian Holland putting his special magic on the production RODNEY BROWN
@oceanbound222 LOL...Flo and Cindy are NOT EVEN IN THIS VIDEO!!! By this time Flo and Cindy were no longer in the Supremes! This is Sherrie Payne, Mary Wilson, and Susaye Green!
well i don't think mary wilson is in this video, and i think that comment of her being all over the place is really funny, the idea of one of the supremes not knowing the steps is cracking me up ha ha ha
Love this song a disco gem which i have on a Supremes compilation CD. Never seen before so thanks. I will let everyone else moan about the politics and just enjoy the song.
Funkiest fat bassline ever!! Listen to the bassline. Never misses a beat at all. Reminds of those days in the Bronx, though. I always prefer this line-up over the original trio. Don't get me. Diana Ross is great as always, but this is just good ol' 70s disco/funk....whatever you call it. It just plain rocks. Scherrie/Susaye/Mary lineup is my favorite of all the Supremes.
Scherrie told me when her and Susaye did the Partners album she thought the Lovebug song was the silliest thing she had ever heard, and now she says its her favorite cut on the LP, lol
Lol. I thought it was quite a stupid song as well, I seldom listen to it. But there actually are some great tracks. Listening to the album, I really quite like it now
I think this video is great! To those of you criticising Mary Wilson - go f**** yourselves because Mary should have always held the lead after Diana Ross left. Mary always did what she could to keep The Supremes going - even when hanging on for dear life. You seem to have forgotten this or you're a really crap historian. Oceanbound222, if you were a true 'Supremes' fan you would think Mary had talent; go f*** yourself!
That's what you think. I like listening to Mary sing lead more often than Diana. Diana only got ahead because she acted cheekily on television; reminding America of either their daughter, grandaughter or niece. And, she only looked twelve!
Mary was not a slave-driver. Keeping a band (girl-group) going is so hard! You have no f****** idea.
Mary wouldn't have earned the group one fan or hit if Berry would have been dumb enough to let her sing lead. She kicked Flo our and never invited her back during the seven yrs after Ross left!
She blocked Syreeta too, who would've been great with Jean and Linda.
Woops you are wrong, Yes Berry was right to have Diana as lead but Mary DID invite Flo to SING with The Supremes as a one off when Diana had left - I thuink it was the scherrie, cindy and mary lineup. Flo didn't sing but tapped a tambourine, BUT Flo's appearance on stage brought HUGE CHEERS from the crowd who were delighted to see Flo again
Berry wanted Syreeta to replace Diana instead of Jean, but Mary threatened to quit if he did because Jean had already been announced as the new lead singer.
She and Pedro fucked the other "salaried" Supremes over like Tina & Ike did to the Ikettes.
DIANA SANG ON THE HITS, FLO, WHICH SOLD MANY MILLIONS AND HAD LITTLE 10 YEAR OLD FREAKS LIKE ME GLUED TO THE RADIO WAITING FOR THEIR SONGS TO COME ON. Their amazing popularity was already cemented thru the radio, before TV elevated them to another level. ROSS IS THE VOICE, follow Cheryl Lynn's advice and know that we: GOT TO BE BE REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right on! ...mary made it harder by not being able to sing, but wanting all the limelight, money, and power. Just imagine if Syreeta, Jean and Linda had been allowed to do their thing without being albatrossed with mary! They'd still be around, like the Stones.
She was VERY strong to have to endure the lost of her good friend and orignal and founder of The Supremes Florence Ballard around the time this was recorded as well as continue as a supreme herself
notice how mary is trying to play the daina role here EXCEPT the singing! Sherry (the lead singer) is forced to act like a back-up. Even Ross never had that kind of nerve.
I don't think she was, she just stands out more because she was taller and she was wearing a different dress because she was very pregnant around this time.
that's what I'm sayin,best1. Nobody ever talks about how Mary put Diana to shame as the Queen Bitch of the Supremes. Diana was selfish and ambitious but Mary needs to be in prison for all her mean shit. Sherry Jamms on this. This is up there with the best of Ross and Terrell.
SCHERRIE** lol She KILLS it this is CLASSIC, have you heard her and Susaye's album 'Partners' they did in 1979 the same year that Mary did her debut solo album. I have both albums and can't wait to start making posting videos of the material on it
Hi Jonathon, I have the Partner's album but thought only a few of the songs were any good...the vocals were great but the album was maybe a little too experimental. I thought Scherrie was absolutely dynamic and a great lead singer for the supremes. wish someone would release cd's of the scherrie years with bonus tracks.
I agree with you about the album, my favourite 2 tracks are When The Day Comes Every Night (it's quite scary actually) and Leaving Me Was The Best You've Ever Done (that track is killer, although I would have loved if they had put some tracks like this video here on there, that sort of HIGH ENERGY dance grooves)
Lol, some songs are good, I LOVE Leaving Me Was The Best Thing You've Ever Done that is classic and some others but the rest I listen to on rare occasion
The supremes were not getting any attention so when they disbanded i imagine scherrie and susaye got even less attention. though their album was not brilliant i thought they had a chance to become great but i think motown had other rhings on its mind and i think this was the time when motown started to waver in its profits and the bigger companies were coming into the scene.
The Supremes had becomeasse. They were caught in an image time warp and other groups like the Pointer Sisters,Honeycomb, Three Degrees took their place. They had too many lead singers and too many personnel changes. Even Motown couldn't force the 4th (or 5th) version of the Supremes down a tired public's throat.
I was bored to tears by their duet lp but I loved the cover picture and I think they are both killer singers.. Jean T.'s was better but not worthy of her amazing talent. Promotion and bad production are responsible for the failing popularity, probably all of Mary's BAD kharma din't help either.
I didn't like the duets lp at first but now I love it and I have to agree with you their vocal talent is immense and it's a shame they are not as popular as their vocals deserve to be. I still believe Mary's album is great as well but the same problem that Flo encountered that ruined any hope of sucess for her debut seemed to follow Mary, no it was not the same label but they didn't know how to promote Mary, such a shame becuase Flo and Mary's debuts are so good!
The Supremes biggest liability was poor promotion but I agree American audiences are fickle esp, in R&B. If Richard Perry had taken them to Planet I bet they would have hit big. The Pointer's were an amazing & original live act though, esp in the early days as a foursome. Honeycomb and 3 Degrees were slightly more than one hit wonders although I do fully appreciate their music.
What ever chart position the songs got in the 70's was the best they could do cuz there weren't enuff albums availble to raise the chart positions as well aslack of radio play cuz either they were not push to play or didn't have the song period.
mary can sing very well. if not berry would never have signeded her, remember the supremes started as a group with three lead singers diana flo and mary.
Where did that lie come from . Diana sings lead from the first lp on except for butter popcorn. GET A LIFE. Write Diana on her MY SPACE how proud you are of her Kennedy Ctr Award.
check your self. there were a few more songs that all three or one other sang lead...come get these memories, pretty baby, after all, people, falling in love with love, can't take my eyes off you. sounds like you need to stop being bitter. be passionate about education, starvation, racism, homelessness.
Go to the Baez site, she's the best singer on those isssues. But check yourself, on not calling out all these Diana haters. diana was a fully formed lead singer from the git. Not the one who just sang "the cutesy songs" as that lyin bitch, mary wilson, claims.
Mary was the most disposible and she knew it. She helped make a sound that worked but she was never THE sound. Good on her, she was in a great group and she is a good gossip I'll give her that.
In the original lineup her Diana and Florence togther whether in harmony, unison or image completed eachother, there was NO OTHER group or lineup that could compete although I must say the Scherrie and Susaye lineup is my next favourite after the first, those two can SAAAAAAAAAAANNNNGGGG!!!
I don't really listen to a lot of seventies stuff but I am sure that there were just as capable and better female acts around, but Scherrie and Susaye do have some pipes though Lol. I heard Freda Payne (Scherrie's older sister) on Band Of Gold, that my stepdad had in his 45 single collection and took a liking to her voice, but I still prefer Scherrie =D
TRUTH! The NY back-up girls like Maretha Stewart, the Raelettes,The Jone's girls , the Waters etc were bad too. According to Motown insiders, Flo & Mary were the only Motown act incapable of learning to sing harmony and rarely if ever did. Their refrains are almost always echos of the melody laid down by LA ROSS. Surely Flo could have, but tone deaf Mary was the problem.
like this one.first time hearing it.it should of done better on the charts.

@dmanLVN The Supremes "You're My Driving Wheel" is hot but from that last album the best cut is "Don't Wanna Be Tie Down"

i loved this lineup but in the videos i think they were just trying too hard. they should have been a little less frenetic in my opinion. the song is great.
best1forward 3 years ago
The lead singer has a behind that will make a man change his religion.
86pimp3 3 years ago
I think this should have been their first single when Sherrie joined the group. But I think Berry Gordy could've cared less about them once Diana left. No matter what they put out, it wouldn't have gotten promoted. This song should've been a hit.

It was the single, but MOTOWN did'nt get behind the way they should have...

I never liked this lineup. It seemed awkward. Mary was pregnant through most of their videos, and she seemed like a giant compared to the other two, who were much shorter, and it was just awkward.
silverdollar85 3 years ago 3
she was pregnant throughout most of their videos? is that why she has on a huge outfit compared to the others? and yeah she really like a giant compared to them too!
iluvflorenceballard 3 years ago
Mary was not all over the place, she was about 5 months pregnant and being careful... That is why she is wearing that tent!

Do you have the take of "Driving Wheel" from the greatest hits album with the pictures of eight of the girls on the front? That's my favorite take of this song, which is my favorite Supremes song, of any of the line ups.

This is another great song! And they were working it!!! I love the robot moves they were doing! Thanks for posting this ivyfield! :)

Yes, that is Mary in the middle with the bat wings, lol!

That Susaye Greene, (third girl?) reminds me of the Julie McCoy character on the Love Boat
, she has got the same hairdo and look!! too much! Girl work it!!!
Rolsvt 3 years ago
I understand where you're coming from but check out the other groups from '75 to '80... Labelle, The Emotions, Pointers all "loosened up" their choreography - partly because some of the disco stuff was just soooo fast!
ivyfield 3 years ago
@ivyfield -well, exactly. But that's what more-so distinguished The Supremes FROM the other groups. They did something different than the other ones' 'differents'! And it was extreme class, which THESE girls HAD! It's just that by this time, they had been sooo disrespected that they wanted soo much to be noticed for what they were....and even in reviews, it was stated that they came off like the 'shouters' at first. Mary Was Wild in this. But Susaye didn't know the steps always...
stage7 1 year ago
I can't belieive this.
Mary always has something to say about Diana being an evil leader, but from the looks of mary and her obcviously more fancy gown, who is the evil lead singer now?
nosiestink 3 years ago
Man!
Talk about out of it!
That was the 'PREGNANT' gown version of the outfit! Need I say MORE?
stage7 3 years ago
Actually Mary was pregnant with her son Pedro (b.1977), Turkessa was born in 1975. she's clearly under-rehearsed, but then I guess that's only to be expected when 5 months pregnant.
maendhu 3 years ago
NO it isn't!
This was a 'chaotic' time for them.
stage7 3 years ago
This is on my "Desert Island Top Ten" list! I like the version on the 70's Supremes Greatest Hits better, though.

I believe that is Mary in the middle, pregnant with her first child Turkessa. I know that is Sheree Payne on the left, but I do not recognize that girl on the right. I lost track after Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong left.

83survivor 3 years ago
Susaye looks like she is pulling a Gloria Swanson, ready for her closeup! She really should have been a soloist, no team player.
jonbru613 4 years ago
Scherrie told me when her and Susaye did the Partners album she thought the Lovebug song was the silliest thing she had ever heard, and now she says its her favorite cut on the LP, lol

Lol. I thought it was quite a stupid song as well, I seldom listen to it. But there actually are some great tracks. Listening to the album, I really quite like it now

Susaye is the youngest and shortest Supreme, while Scherrie is the second shortest (of all 8).

There are ten Supremes. You're forgetting Betty Travis (nee McGlown) and Barbara Martin from the very early days.
florenceballard 4 years ago
you are right...we do tend to forget the early days of this group
winjasonwin 4 years ago
Betty Travis was only a Primette. She never became a Supreme.

People say that Diana was superior than the other supremes......of course....superior including sleep with the boss to get there!!!!
eltinho2 4 years ago
I think this video is great! To those of you criticising Mary Wilson - go f**** yourselves because Mary should have always held the lead after Diana Ross left. Mary always did what she could to keep The Supremes going - even when hanging on for dear life. You seem to have forgotten this or you're a really crap historian. Oceanbound222, if you were a true 'Supremes' fan you would think Mary had talent; go f*** yourself!
florenceballard 4 years ago 2
MARY can NOT SING,Flo honey. PLus she was a slavedriver to the post Diana Supremes.
taddyd1 4 years ago
That's what you think. I like listening to Mary sing lead more often than Diana. Diana only got ahead because she acted cheekily on television; reminding America of either their daughter, grandaughter or niece. And, she only looked twelve!
Mary was not a slave-driver. Keeping a band (girl-group) going is so hard! You have no f****** idea.
florenceballard 3 years ago
Mary wouldn't have earned the group one fan or hit if Berry would have been dumb enough to let her sing lead. She kicked Flo our and never invited her back during the seven yrs after Ross left!
She blocked Syreeta too, who would've been great with Jean and Linda.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Woops you are wrong, Yes Berry was right to have Diana as lead but Mary DID invite Flo to SING with The Supremes as a one off when Diana had left - I thuink it was the scherrie, cindy and mary lineup. Flo didn't sing but tapped a tambourine, BUT Flo's appearance on stage brought HUGE CHEERS from the crowd who were delighted to see Flo again
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
i an not talkin about letting her stand on stage one night at knott's berry farm.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Berry wanted Syreeta to replace Diana instead of Jean, but Mary threatened to quit if he did because Jean had already been announced as the new lead singer.
florenceballard 3 years ago
She and Pedro fucked the other "salaried" Supremes over like Tina & Ike did to the Ikettes.
DIANA SANG ON THE HITS, FLO, WHICH SOLD MANY MILLIONS AND HAD LITTLE 10 YEAR OLD FREAKS LIKE ME GLUED TO THE RADIO WAITING FOR THEIR SONGS TO COME ON. Their amazing popularity was already cemented thru the radio, before TV elevated them to another level. ROSS IS THE VOICE, follow Cheryl Lynn's advice and know that we: GOT TO BE BE REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
taddyd1 3 years ago
Right on! ...mary made it harder by not being able to sing, but wanting all the limelight, money, and power. Just imagine if Syreeta, Jean and Linda had been allowed to do their thing without being albatrossed with mary! They'd still be around, like the Stones.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Mary can sing, just not very well. Her voice is so BLAND. And she's no vocalist like Diana was.
BlogShag 2 years ago
I thought Mary did pretty good I mean after all she is one of the orginals. I mean you can't except to much most the of the originals were gone.
spliffdeez1 4 years ago
Mary was the ONLY original left by this point.
She was VERY strong to have to endure the lost of her good friend and orignal and founder of The Supremes Florence Ballard around the time this was recorded as well as continue as a supreme herself
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
notice how mary is trying to play the daina role here EXCEPT the singing! Sherry (the lead singer) is forced to act like a back-up. Even Ross never had that kind of nerve.
taddyd1 4 years ago
I don't think she was, she just stands out more because she was taller and she was wearing a different dress because she was very pregnant around this time.
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
This should have been a hit like Thelma and linda clifford's.
taddyd1 4 years ago
scherrie should have stood centre here, it wass her song through and through.
best1forward 4 years ago
that's what I'm sayin,best1. Nobody ever talks about how Mary put Diana to shame as the Queen Bitch of the Supremes. Diana was selfish and ambitious but Mary needs to be in prison for all her mean shit. Sherry Jamms on this. This is up there with the best of Ross and Terrell.
taddyd1 4 years ago
SCHERRIE** lol She KILLS it this is CLASSIC, have you heard her and Susaye's album 'Partners' they did in 1979 the same year that Mary did her debut solo album. I have both albums and can't wait to start making posting videos of the material on it
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
Hi Jonathon, I have the Partner's album but thought only a few of the songs were any good...the vocals were great but the album was maybe a little too experimental. I thought Scherrie was absolutely dynamic and a great lead singer for the supremes. wish someone would release cd's of the scherrie years with bonus tracks.
best1forward 4 years ago
I agree with you about the album, my favourite 2 tracks are When The Day Comes Every Night (it's quite scary actually) and Leaving Me Was The Best You've Ever Done (that track is killer, although I would have loved if they had put some tracks like this video here on there, that sort of HIGH ENERGY dance grooves)
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
i thought that album was a bore! i like the cover though.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Lol, some songs are good, I LOVE Leaving Me Was The Best Thing You've Ever Done that is classic and some others but the rest I listen to on rare occasion
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
The supremes were not getting any attention so when they disbanded i imagine scherrie and susaye got even less attention. though their album was not brilliant i thought they had a chance to become great but i think motown had other rhings on its mind and i think this was the time when motown started to waver in its profits and the bigger companies were coming into the scene.
best1forward 4 years ago
Storybook Romance is another nice track from that album
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
i agree.
best1forward 4 years ago
The Supremes had becomeasse. They were caught in an image time warp and other groups like the Pointer Sisters,Honeycomb, Three Degrees took their place. They had too many lead singers and too many personnel changes. Even Motown couldn't force the 4th (or 5th) version of the Supremes down a tired public's throat.
jimjeffjeanine 3 years ago
True. But Scherrie and Susaye's album is HOT as well as Mary's debut on Motown.
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
True. But Scherrie and Susaye's album is HOT as well as Mary's debut on Motown.
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
I was bored to tears by their duet lp but I loved the cover picture and I think they are both killer singers.. Jean T.'s was better but not worthy of her amazing talent. Promotion and bad production are responsible for the failing popularity, probably all of Mary's BAD kharma din't help either.
taddyd1 3 years ago
kharma? lool sorry.
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
The Supremes biggest liability was poor promotion but I agree American audiences are fickle esp, in R&B. If Richard Perry had taken them to Planet I bet they would have hit big. The Pointer's were an amazing & original live act though, esp in the early days as a foursome. Honeycomb and 3 Degrees were slightly more than one hit wonders although I do fully appreciate their music.
taddyd1 3 years ago
What ever chart position the songs got in the 70's was the best they could do cuz there weren't enuff albums availble to raise the chart positions as well aslack of radio play cuz either they were not push to play or didn't have the song period.

mary can sing very well. if not berry would never have signeded her, remember the supremes started as a group with three lead singers diana flo and mary.

Where did that lie come from . Diana sings lead from the first lp on except for butter popcorn. GET A LIFE. Write Diana on her MY SPACE how proud you are of her Kennedy Ctr Award.
taddyd1 4 years ago
check your self. there were a few more songs that all three or one other sang lead...come get these memories, pretty baby, after all, people, falling in love with love, can't take my eyes off you. sounds like you need to stop being bitter. be passionate about education, starvation, racism, homelessness.
cameronfox 4 years ago
Go to the Baez site, she's the best singer on those isssues. But check yourself, on not calling out all these Diana haters. diana was a fully formed lead singer from the git. Not the one who just sang "the cutesy songs" as that lyin bitch, mary wilson, claims.
taddyd1 4 years ago
Mary was the most disposible and she knew it. She helped make a sound that worked but she was never THE sound. Good on her, she was in a great group and she is a good gossip I'll give her that.
best1forward 4 years ago
Lol.
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
Jonathan,
You know I love the Supremes but the Blossoms, The Sweet Inspirations and The FranklinSisters all could outsing and out harmonize the Supremes.
jimjeffjeanine 3 years ago
I don't really listen to a lot of seventies stuff but I am sure that there were just as capable and better female acts around, but Scherrie and Susaye do have some pipes though Lol. I heard Freda Payne (Scherrie's older sister) on Band Of Gold, that my stepdad had in his 45 single collection and took a liking to her voice, but I still prefer Scherrie =D
JonathanLGardner 3 years ago
Surely Flo could have, but tone deaf Mary was the problem.
taddyd1 3 years ago
