I have #91 of original 100 signed X100B Series IV Head. Love the clean and dirty sounds on this amp but the amp lacked volume compared to my other amps even when using the active EQ on either channel. Carvin wrongly designed the effects loop on these early amps to always be in circuit (even when effects loop was turned off). The stock effects circuit did a 10 db volume cut at all times. I clipped the -10 effects switch resistor out and the amp volume doubled but still sounds great playing quiet.
I may be getin' one in a trade! I use to have a V3. But yer demo's helped alot on sellin' me on this amp!! I think it will out Rock the V3!!! Awesome playin' btw too!!
@timothycomer HMM... I don't know. I've got an X100b series IV...LOVE IT!!!! I' was looking at the V3, but didn't have the scratch at the time, so went with this. Am i sorry... NO FUCKING WAY!!!! Do i still want a V3 for some of the heavyer tones...mmmm maybe. I do just fine with this and my Boss GT8. But still....One can dream. Keep rocking.
I've had mine for about two months and am completely happy with it!!!!! It complements any guitar i plug into it. If i want a heavier tone, i just kick in a distortion pedal. This amp has great harmoinc overtones, and note seperation on chords, and is alot less hissey than other amps of the same wattage. The 100/50/25 watt switch is great. Killer amp!!! Can not recommend it enogh!!!! Great demo also!!!
Another great comprehensive review of this killer amp!!!! I am looking to get a new head, and this just shot to the top of my list!!! THANKS!!! Yeah i know... " HEH HEH you said head"... GROW UP ;)
love this amp. been trying to sell it ever since i got my Orange Rocker 30, but i'll always love this grey ozite monster, haha. i think mine's an 89? it looks identical to the one shown here.
Very cool playing. I have one of those gray fuzzy monster and I love it. I will never sell it either. The bias is set to 160ma and I am using JJ E34Ls on them. 160ma is the sweet spot for this amp. I also have JJ KT77s as spares but I prefer the aggressiveness of the JJ E34Ls. All I can say about this amp is they are tone heavens.
@rgvilla55 would you recomend this amp to a hard rock and metal guitarist? i'm trying to save up for a new amp but i don't really know what i should buy. i'm looking at this, the v3, and the jet city jca100.
If you like 80s hard rock and early Metallica tones, then this is your amp. It is very much a classic rock amp. If you are going to play modern metal or death metal, then a V3 would be your amp. You can always use a pedal to get metal tones on the X100B. It takes pedals very well. This amp is very similar to a Mesa Boogie Mark III.
They only cost $700 brand new......I was told for the old 80s 90s x100bs $300-$400 is about right....anymore and pass until a better deal comes along.....about 50% of new price.
Those amps are hard to find in decent condition...most have been road amps with a lot of gigs on them.....Carvin should still be making these amps......but I guess jr wants a hi-gain head to play death metal.
Great playing.....you do a good job of showing that amps different sounds.....I want one so bad I can't stand it....one like yours...not one covered with that ugly gray brillo pad looking fuzz.
How the HECK do you keep your guitar in tune after all that bending? Also, I found that the reverb on my pal's X100B was ok, but it's weakest link. Do you disagree? Yes, amazing clean. I own over 40 vintage amps and could probably sell them all and get one of these for $400 and be set for any tone. LOL. Could never sell my Fender tweeds though.
Love the Suite Madame Blue. Sounds awesome. I've got to get one of these.

Hot lick 19 seconds into the video.
I bought a X100B for $325
I have it in the shop....having a bias mod done....there was no way to adjust the bias on these amps.

What is a fair price for one of these amps used in good condition?
Nordland796 1 year ago
@Nordland796 Depends on the year, old or re-issue model. Probably around $500-$600 I would guess.

I like your playing, very insightful. Thinking about one of these amps, you obviously know how to make it do what you want it to do.
