The song is called "The Ballad of Serenity." Composed by Joss Whedon. With the intro to Firefly sung by Sonny Rhodes.

Barring any in-studio fighting like happened to "Space Above and Beyond", the reason they cancelled Firefly was simple; varying mileage. That is, some people hear what this show was about and go "Cowboys? In space?! Oh, that's just awesome!" But a hell of a lot of other people react, "Cowboys in space? Meh, lame." Unfortunately, someone at Fox must have been a "Meh," rather than an "Awesome!"

i don't know where i've been but i didn't realize there was more to that song than the chorus that was shown in the starting credits during the show. the refrain is even more personal and specific than the chorus, which is amazing. this truly is mal's song.

yeah the was more to the song this was the original lyrics and the director said that there was not enough time to have the full song so he just had the corus in the credits. a shame cuz i like the guy's voice that did the credit version better.
