  • Y'all kids just don't know! That is true musical, artistic genius! God bless Lady Ella and Mister Mel.

  • OH MY GOD. My face hurts from smiling SO HARD.

  • This video always, makes me smile...

  • They say these rap lyrics are hard to understand and don't make sense - those two were just singing gibberish!

  • With Whitney's death, I was looking for part of my childhood. I GREW up with these greats. PEOPLE that used they're voices as a instrument - GAVE the WORLD MUSIC and new interruptions. I learned to sing with feeling.

God bless then - ALL of them. I am not a big believer in God or an afterlife, BUT if this is what it will be in heaven -- I want to be part of that choir, because there is NO bigger reward.

  • One of the GREATEST vocal combinations in the history of music.....

  • OMG! people who can actually sing sophisticated music at the Grammys? Is this the twilight zone?

  • love this!!!!

  • Absolutely mind blowing. There simply is no talent like that left. They were phenomenal together. Legendary and classic clip. Thank you for posting it.

  • Seriously, just lost it. FANTASTIC!!!

  • @mountainbikingchick At least they're clapping on 2 and 4!! Here in Britain everyone would be clapping on 1 and 3! Like dorks

  • so much fun! try sitting still :))

  • Good grief, what fantastic stuff!

  • Royalty was in the house!

  • OMG OMG OMG.... speechless .... <3 <3

  • DAMN!!!!!!!

  • Count Basie vs Dizzy Gillespie vs John Coltrane vs Chick Corea - in one category? AWESOME!!

  • Follow THAT. Anyone thinking about slagging off the USA must first remember: this is the country which single handedly gave humankind jazz, gospel, blues, country AND the Great American Songbook of Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers etc. Just for a moment try to imagine a world without them - a quantity of good things so jaw-droppingly gargantuan as to be immeasurable

  • @MrPoupard So the USA has produced so much musical talent, that it's unslaggable? Just like every other country, the USA will be slagged for its gargantuan and immeasurable failures

  • Pure Magic.

An American classic that deserves a place in the Smithsonian

  • i hate when the audience claps along! damnit I don't wanna hear your HANDS!!! aarrrgg!!

  • John Lennon at 2:22?

  • I am dying with happiness at hearing such excellent singing. Now THIS is quality at its highest! Whenever I am at a rock concert, I hear them telling the audience to scream. This type of live performance will make me scream without any prompting!

  • This is jazzzz!

  • It's amazing how bad the Grammys have become. First of all they don't even show more than about 5 or 6 categories on the live telecast (usually categories with whoever is huge on the charts). Watching this video brings back extraordinary memories that there was actual talent, live singing and categories (jazz!!!) other than "Record Of The Year". I mean, Ella and Mel together in a duet! What could we possibly get today? Lady GaGa and Bruno Mars? Who cares.

  • This is ridiculous!..i really wish the was the mainstream style of music nowadays instead of the bullshit we hear on the radio now..Jazz music is amazing and these two inspire me so much!. Hopefully i'll be nearly as good as they were.

  • I can't believe this but I'm sitting here crying. We just don't artistry like this anymore. Do the kids and singers know what they are missing?

  • omg i LOVE it when these two scat toegther. i love it i LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whoa!!! jazz @ the grammies!!!

  • She must've said "thank you" like 100000000 times in life

  • One of my favorite singers, Andy Williams, introducing my other favorite singer, Mel Torme! And Ella! OH MY! Could it get any better?!

  • I forgot to mention that Ella is also known as: The Chair Professor of Scat Singing!

  • The First Lady of Song and her favorite pupil - The Blue Fox (aka The Velvet Fog). Talent like this doesn't come around very often...that's why we had to cherish it. The single greatest singer in history - and the only male vocalist who could even keep up! This is 24-karat!

  • I feel like i'm in HEAVEN, JESUS, the velvet fog and Ella. LORD, Mel torn it UP!!!!!!!!!!!! Ella was PERFECTION!!!!!!!

  • My head was in my own ass. I had no idea Mel was that good. I knew about Ella. What a treat.

  • Ella's turn that starts at 2.07 is really something else, she sings perfectly through the changes, not just blues licks...

  • GOOD GOD!!!! I JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF LISTENING TO THESE LEGENDS!!

  • To say nothing of the nominees, every one a first class musician.. legends all.

Times have changed... at least as to what is appreciated and respected, our audiences today are woerfully undereducated.

  • A bit difference than today's Grammys.... wow, they really cut loose....

    This is jazz folks!

    Thanks for posting....

  • No way!!!!! The AUDIENCE is CLAPPING on 2 and 4!!!

  • Back when the Grammys were awards for music!

  • I got to see Ella live FIVE times in the 1970s, and later saw Mel Torme at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. I am so lucky to have had those opportunities.

  • @colodude3 YES YOU ARE!!! I cry that I was born later and therefore didn't get a chance to experience this. music now SUCKS. i LOVE these two and so much. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  • ...and that is the greatest award presentation EVER.

  • Love it

  • Lawdd have mercy :-)

  • As a testament to the greatness of both, neither was thrown off by the audience's horrid clapping.

  • wawawawawawawawawawaooooooo!!!!

  • "chuck corea!

    ..uh, i mean chick corea!"

    hahahaha, oh mel..

  • *_* NO COMMENT

  • Wow everything was so classy back then...

  • Great Stuff!!!! but now they have traded in Ella and Mel for Gaga and Beiber - sad sad day......

  • @95Galante Yep!

  • The undisputed king & queen of jazz scat! What talent. Hard to believe this is actually the American Grammy awards. Just look at what it's devolved into over the last 30 yrs. Really sick. Does the Grammies reserve even a tiny portion of the show for Jazz artists anymore?? Everytime I watch the Grammies, it's always some mediocre schlock or some no or low-talent rap "artist". I get disgusted and turn the channel. Now it's all about eye-catching antics and dress and catering to the lowest element

  • @wildnites558 Disagree Armstrong is the king HAND DOWN

  • @wildnites558 Amen!!!!!

  • @wildnites558 totally agree with out....

  • @wildnites558 WELL SAID!!!

  • TRULY AMAZING!!

  • a little over a year and look how many views.. we have been waiting for this video for a long time, and I still say thank you for posting this!!!

  • Two of my favorite singers performing scats.

  • 1:30 To HEar IT AGAin!

  • except that the wrong guy won!

  • OMG, that is FANTASTIC!

  • Wow!!!

  • I've been looking for this clip for over 30 years. I haven't seen since it was first aired. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

  • @catfish36 Bless you!!! I'm 34 and have seen this clip before and so grateful to see this here. Not many times you see this kind of talent.

  • Remember watching this as a kid of 12. Blew me away then and still gives me goosebumps. Just saw a video of her singing with Manhattan Transfer and another of her with Sarah Vaughan and Pearl Bailey (triple play!!!)

  • Dear YouTube, why the fuck is there a dislike button on this video ??

  • @tecciztecatl91 OMG! I love you for saying that!!! Exactly.

  • WOW!

  • I've been wanting to hear this for YEARS! I can hardly believe my eyes!

Or ears! MEL AND ELLA! Happy birthday ELLA!

  • I've been wanting to hear this for YEARS! I can hardly believe my eyes!

Or ears! MEL AND ELLA! Happy birthday ELLA!

  • I've been wanting to hear this for YEARS! I can hardly believe my eyes!

  • The 2 greatest singers of all time. FACT!!!

  • @HopefullDog Hell to the yeah!!! FACT Ella and Mel ARE the two best!!!!!

  • Wow. That's when America had culture. It's disturbing to see the end result from that era of Grammy awards to the Grammys now. So sad.... :o(

  • If this doesn't make you laugh or make you happy, you are communist and dislike everything good and holy in the world.

  • @Toxicbarbarian Imperialists don't like this too.

  • This is great!!!, young musicians here is where it's at

  • that's jazz!! an art form at it's absolute peak...

  • Now you have one of the greatest Grammy moment ever. Saw it as a kid and never forgot it. And what a pure musical genious and all around renaissance intellect Mel Torme was. The word royalty was invented for these two, but it's so sadly overused a term nowadays.

  • Thanks for post, I was 15 when this originally aired living in Petaluma Ca, and from then on I was a fan of Ella and Mel. Been hoping for many years to find this on here.

  • Do they let real musicians perform at the Grammies anymore?

  • I remember watching this Grammy show in 1976. That was when the Grammy's had some class. I don't even watch it anymore.

  • @dmmrad54 Me, neither. I think the last time I watched was in the mid-'80's, just about the time things started to slide. Even the recording academy has come for more and heavier criticism recently. But this, this was magic time. Damn right, Captain and Tennille. You better get on your feet for talent of this calibre.

  • That's right, y'all, get on your feet!

  • @RossiniSoprano I know this is an old comment but this is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw Ella and Mel and after I thought: YA"LL BETTER GET THE HELL UP AND CLAP!!!! you just witnessed genius.

  • Luuv It........!

  • I'M IN TEARS!!!! THIS FURTHER CONFIRMS THAT I WAS BORN IN THE WRONG TIME!!!!

  • @ellasfloyd THANK YOU!!!!!! ME TOO. my GOD!!!

  • @ellasfloyd OMG!!!!!! I HAVE SAID THAT ALL MY LIFE!!!! ALTHOUGH I WAS BORN IN THE SIXTIES I WISH I WAS BORN 20 OR 30 YEARS BEFORE!

  • Beside the fact that they look totally wasted on weed, the Japanse subtitles for "scat" is hilarious.

  • @n2eik THey are not high. They are wasted on LIFE> LOL>

  • Mel Doesn't look like The Cowardly Lion or anything. Nah.

    Awesome!

  • Top dat!

  • Absolutely. These are my favorites on jazz voice

Mel Torme and Ella Fitzgerald. Thank you very much to both

Many thanks to Myerbacardi for uploading

    Happy New Year to everybody

  • OH YEAH - that's jazz.

  • Still Sounds good!

  • Chuck Corea! Ha!

  • Sends shivers down my spine.

  • I still remember this some 30-odd years later. One of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.

  • pure talent! the best grammy presentation i've ever seen

  • Just watched Pearl Bailey, Sarah Vaughan & Ella Fitzgerald together don't think can digest this one-It's too much thanks!

  • LOUIE BELLSON. O-kay. I heard "Accepting for Chick Corea, WILLIE NELSON" and I was like......
