With Whitney's death, I was looking for part of my childhood. I GREW up with these greats. PEOPLE that used they're voices as a instrument - GAVE the WORLD MUSIC and new interruptions. I learned to sing with feeling.
God bless then - ALL of them. I am not a big believer in God or an afterlife, BUT if this is what it will be in heaven -- I want to be part of that choir, because there is NO bigger reward.
Absolutely mind blowing. There simply is no talent like that left. They were phenomenal together. Legendary and classic clip. Thank you for posting it.
Follow THAT. Anyone thinking about slagging off the USA must first remember: this is the country which single handedly gave humankind jazz, gospel, blues, country AND the Great American Songbook of Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers etc. Just for a moment try to imagine a world without them - a quantity of good things so jaw-droppingly gargantuan as to be immeasurable
@MrPoupard So the USA has produced so much musical talent, that it's unslaggable? Just like every other country, the USA will be slagged for its gargantuan and immeasurable failures
I am dying with happiness at hearing such excellent singing. Now THIS is quality at its highest! Whenever I am at a rock concert, I hear them telling the audience to scream. This type of live performance will make me scream without any prompting!
It's amazing how bad the Grammys have become. First of all they don't even show more than about 5 or 6 categories on the live telecast (usually categories with whoever is huge on the charts). Watching this video brings back extraordinary memories that there was actual talent, live singing and categories (jazz!!!) other than "Record Of The Year". I mean, Ella and Mel together in a duet! What could we possibly get today? Lady GaGa and Bruno Mars? Who cares.
This is ridiculous!..i really wish the was the mainstream style of music nowadays instead of the bullshit we hear on the radio now..Jazz music is amazing and these two inspire me so much!. Hopefully i'll be nearly as good as they were.
The First Lady of Song and her favorite pupil - The Blue Fox (aka The Velvet Fog). Talent like this doesn't come around very often...that's why we had to cherish it. The single greatest singer in history - and the only male vocalist who could even keep up! This is 24-karat!
I got to see Ella live FIVE times in the 1970s, and later saw Mel Torme at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. I am so lucky to have had those opportunities.
@colodude3 YES YOU ARE!!! I cry that I was born later and therefore didn't get a chance to experience this. music now SUCKS. i LOVE these two and so much. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
The undisputed king & queen of jazz scat! What talent. Hard to believe this is actually the American Grammy awards. Just look at what it's devolved into over the last 30 yrs. Really sick. Does the Grammies reserve even a tiny portion of the show for Jazz artists anymore?? Everytime I watch the Grammies, it's always some mediocre schlock or some no or low-talent rap "artist". I get disgusted and turn the channel. Now it's all about eye-catching antics and dress and catering to the lowest element
Remember watching this as a kid of 12. Blew me away then and still gives me goosebumps. Just saw a video of her singing with Manhattan Transfer and another of her with Sarah Vaughan and Pearl Bailey (triple play!!!)
Now you have one of the greatest Grammy moment ever. Saw it as a kid and never forgot it. And what a pure musical genious and all around renaissance intellect Mel Torme was. The word royalty was invented for these two, but it's so sadly overused a term nowadays.
Thanks for post, I was 15 when this originally aired living in Petaluma Ca, and from then on I was a fan of Ella and Mel. Been hoping for many years to find this on here.
@dmmrad54 Me, neither. I think the last time I watched was in the mid-'80's, just about the time things started to slide. Even the recording academy has come for more and heavier criticism recently. But this, this was magic time. Damn right, Captain and Tennille. You better get on your feet for talent of this calibre.
@RossiniSoprano I know this is an old comment but this is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw Ella and Mel and after I thought: YA"LL BETTER GET THE HELL UP AND CLAP!!!! you just witnessed genius.
