This... is... amazing. It's here that you truly see that Tim Minchin is not only a musical genius, but an incredibly intelligent man... far more than most people can aspire to be.
A lot of it is a rewriting of 'the Love Song of J.Alfed Prufrock', which looks at a man wasting his life, moving through meaningless experiences. Look it up, Tim's done an amazing job using bits of it here =)
More brilliance from Tim. The ultimate man, funny, sexy and has a wickedly sharp mind and wit. And he can also articulate and communicate as well.... Dreamy sigh.....
This is also a poke at Freudian psycology, where it is said an infant goes through various phases of life: a genital, perrenial, oral, and anal phase. A colon is part of the anus, and one of the last phases of life, soooo... yeah
@Arachapooch How do you have the main idea right and have the rest completely wrong? Yes, part of this song is a poke at Freud's model of psychosexual development but the colon is part of the large intestine and the anus is just the exterior opening to the rectum (also part of the large intestine) also Freud's model of psychosexual development starts at birth and the last phase starts at puberty with the order being 1. oral 2. anal 3. phallic 4. latency and lastly 5. genital.
It really doesn't. It has a similar vocal rhythm in parts, because it's not really a song, more a beat poem. Donnie Darko used the backing from the Gary Jules version of Mad World, which doesn't sound like this.
@Smok0 and his head began to whither, the drawstrings around his hoodie draw tighter and he crawled on the floor, he turned into a ball and simply rolled away.
@AhaSeriously The perineum is the area...or whatever the hell you'd call it...between the crotch and the ass - between, as Tim is connecting, the anal and genital stage that Freud wrote about....More specific questions work great. :D
Foolish uneducated one. Try becoming familiar with the works of poet T.S. Eliot. In particular, 'The Hollow Men', 'Rhapsody on a windy night' , 'Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock' and 'Cats' (the musical). Then perhaps one day you will return and listen to this pure genius once again and fully appreciate the humour and perfection of this song.
I hated Freud (as a person more than his body of work) when we studied him in Psychology - 'golden Siggy' - *growls* - so this is highly enjoyable in that respect, as well as the way it goes a bit Rage Against The Machine towards the end :D
I can see why it took so long for me to find this one (and why it only has 964 views). I think the intricacies of Freudian psychology are a little too obscure to form the basis of a popular song. I am just eating up anything by Tim Minchin right now, though, so I'm glad I found it.
its sooo clever how he manages to tie Sigmund Freud's pyschosexual stages with the Perineum Millenium he had previously mentioned! i love his songs and poems cause they are so we thought out
Is it weird that this is one of my favorite poems? O.o

This is amazing. And it's full of T.S. Eliot's poetry. Prufrock mainly but there's a wee bit of The Hollow Men to end it.
I love it. It's probably the most intelligent comedy song i've ever heard.

This is how the world ends, not with a fullstop but with a colon...
i really dont get this...
someone explain please
TheSamBrunt 2 years ago
A colon indicates that there is a list, or more to come after it.
So when he says it doesn't end with a fullstop, but a colon.
He means that there is more to come after the world ends, or something along the lines of that.

also, as he was tlking about body parts, testes and perineum and anus, the colon is another name for a part of the intestine.
so as a lot of his songs do, it has double meaning.
