@decoydragon11 No, his fans did not give him the title. He really started a publicity campaign to drum up support for the entire thing. He gave it to himself and called MTV and asked them to address/introduce him as such. They did not agree. Neither did anyone else until you saw it everywhere in his passing. If we really want to be technical, Elvis has the most pop hits according to Guiness. I would think that would make him King of Pop as well.

The "King" titles are what settle it for me. Michael Jackson is a self proclaimed king; a title he gave himself. Elvis earned his and was given to him by his fans as king of the charts.

It was a well thought out plan that MJ put together and got her to go along with. It is simple, the more authorities such as newspapers, MTV, Elizabeth type celebrities that kept the title alive, then hopefully it would catch on. Believe me, no one knew him commonly by that until very recently.
