This is amazing - I really want to learn this song because it's so beautiful and has such a strong message. I'm a beginner as well, but I'll try my best! Thank you so much!
Love it! Thank you so much for posting this! It's my favorite Billy Joel song (that's not one of his mega hits).
Posting suggestion...can you make a video over Ain't No Crime off Piano Man? The sheet music out there doesn't get all the cool little stuff he does in that song.
@De123ification If you're a true beginner, then you might have quicker success with an easier song like "Hey Jude" or "Imagine." But try it anyway, you might be better than you think!
I'm a beginner, and after a a couple of hours I manage to play the song, with no problems at all, from the beginning to the middle of the chorus. Practise is all you need, I say. But I'm a patience person, guess you'll need patience too.
Your lessons are some of the most valuable resources on YouTube. Do you, or have you ever considered, posting a lesson for Stiletto? I would pay for a lesson on that one!
THanks so much :), I was wondering, what is it that you play just after the chorus (when will you realise, vienna waits for you *repeat of chord* then the buildup) I was wondering what the buildup was? THat's my favourite part of the song xD, thanks for any help :D
@RockPaperScissors95 On "when will you realize," the chord is Gb7 to F, then it's a Bb on "Vienna waits for you." Then the Bb just repeats until the next verse. Is that the part you're referring to?
I'm singing and playing the piano to Vienna in our school talent show happening next spring lol. I don't think I'll be able to memerize the all the music and I'm really bad at reading sheet music. What do you suggest.
@zxdrzxdr1 If you can get the main points of this video memorized, then just write the lyrics down with the chords ntoes above them and use that. See if that works.
@pianojohn113 i actually changed a few parts up to the A7 chord pr whatever it is. i dont really know if im doing it right so maybe ill put up a video of me playing up to where i've memorized and you can give me some tips? :)
I don't play piano (I own one - go figure) but I wish I could take lessons. I enjoyed the Vienna tutorial anyhow. Thanks for helping people break down a beautiful song into manageable steps. Someday....
This is so awesome. I love Billy Joel. I tried Piano Man, but as a former trumpet player new to piano that was too much. This, however, is just difficult enough to make me try, but easy enough to learn that I don't give up. Thanks for your videos. I learn better by watching then reading.
You're probably hearing the bass note being played first. The rhythms are a little bit syncopated.. For many chords on this song, I'll play the lower bass note a half beat or so before the rest of the chord. Is that what you're referring to?
thanks sooooo much for posting these. My new years resolution is to learn more piano songs. I am definitely going to learn this before the end of 2010 :)
Haha wow man i never thought i could learn this until is saw your videos. I've already got the intro nailed down and now im working onthe main part. Thanks ALOT for posting these videos. Fantastic job.
Pianojohn - take a lot of pride and satisfaction in knowing you have inspired someone in this world to love music and pick up an old instrument again after many years. You have given me a wonderful gift. Thank you.
yes really nice, but in your 'performance' video you play a great 'instrument only' section that I'd like to learn too. any chance you will be teaching that in the near future? without it, the song is not complete.
Thank you VERY much!! I've wanted to play this for so long, and now I can. Sort of. Actually I suck, but oh well. This is my ALL TIME favorite somg. You play it brilliantly.
I do play the chords twice in many parts of the song, just to keep the rhythm going. The notes in between are just me breaking up the chords a bit into individual notes.
Best tutorial I've seen yet, for anything. I love this song, and have always wanted to play it on the piano. Looks like I'll be visiting your channel frequently :)
Pianojohn113, I applaud you, someone who is just happy to teach for the sake of teaching, arming the world with ability just out of love for the piano. Your methods are brilliant and your patience is astounding ( your playing aint bad either hehehe ) I cant afford lessons but with tutorials like yours dreams come true of just being able to finger out a tune that someone might recognise BRAVO ( *standing applause ) p.s. is lights go out on broadway intro and song in your rep ? another tricky one.
Thanks Christopher, that's very kind of you. I've gotten a lot of joy from music over the years, so I'm hopeful others will get the same thing out of it that I have for so long.
Regarding the intro and main part of Miami 2017, yes, it's been on the list for some time now, and as soon as I get organized I'll have something done on that as well! Great song, too! :-)
o man you are amazing. Learning stilleto would be amazing as well. This is the main part, but is it possible for you to post the solo he has towards the end? I saw the other video you have playing the full version through and it was really really good. I was just wondering if it was possible for you teach us the solo?
Yes, the solo... I had originally planned to do a separate video on that and just forgot to do it.. I think I had about ten videos I did that session, and lost track of what I'd done and hadn't done. Anyway, I should be able to get that one done eventually. Kind of makes learning the song complete that way!
I dont think i can even explain how amazing you are. I mean to take the time to go through this with everyone is a wonderfull and INCREDIBLE help to everyone watching
