  • This is my favorite track by Asteria. Nice to find a video of it. I like the moment at 03:54, when Sylvia gives the camera "the look".

Now i play the guitar, mostly classic pieces and flamenco. I owe this all to this beautiful and so talented lady and this outstanding guy. I wish i could see yo live. Thx

  • Quelle beauté limpide

Ce sont des larmes qui chantent !

  • Abraxas1177, that wise man was Nietzsche. Btw, I was just about to message you to say that I admire your comment on free will.

Another wise man, Schopenhauer, once said, "A man can do whatever he wills, but he cannot will as he wills."

Basically, you don't choose your desires, and thus your will is not free. Just another one of those simple concepts that no one seems to understand! :)

  • une interprètation magistrale, sans équivoque

  • I saw them in concert today - in Baltimore ... and was deeply impressed. - I am now a fan of this music for life!

  • A nice moment with your voice and your lut . Thanks ...(5*****)

  • THEY'RE COMING TO BALTIMORE!!!! I'm so excited.

  • Is this a Guillaume Duffay song? Her voice is awsome.

  • Wonderful. This song alone made me buy your album.

  • very cool stuff, surprised to see frets on that lute though!

  • ~Magnifique... Respect.. Like the Languedoc so long ago when Troubadors truly existed... May Courtly Love exist for Eternity~

  • Wow. Such beautiful voices!

  • Wow simply amazing

  • How a culture that produced such beautiful music could roam the planet leaving a trail of blood and misery whichs after-effects last to this day is a mystery.

  • Please, as if all peoples don't leave 'trails of blood and misery'. Anyway, the world owes its progress to Western culture.

  • it will take you a lot of time to understand the nature of western patterns of progress. Its singularity lies in the fact that it has mastered the art of destroying its alternatives. as this pattern continues on, it will automatically selfdestruct. that is hardly what I call world progress.

  • So destroying alternatives automatically entails self-destruction? That doesn't make any sense.

  • look into the dynamics of lifesustaining ecosystems. Anything that wants to last needs a certain degree of diversity in order for interaction to enrich it. The spaniards/portuguese... your "west" would never have "discovered" "america" if it hadn't been for the chinese maps drawn around "1421" and the mechanical discoveries by the chinese "1434" (look those facts up in gavin menzies). the westeners prowess lies in their ruthless pursuit of wealth from abroad to supply their barren homelands.

  • i am in agreement with you here. What they call progress is indeed baffling. I look to my country Italy for some answers. I do believe myself in the values of such culture and tradtion, as long as there is respect and honor amongst us. I do not believe that any country is the best, including mine, but I do believe it has shined a light among others. Also America is unique that though there is diversity, there is no unity. Too many cultures/ethnicities clash. This has created a problem.

  • Look into the dynamics of biological organisms. None thrive on altruism!

  • maybe... we need not anthropologify non-conscious entities like cells and organisms to that degree to understand the mechanisms and effects of exploitation and discrimination through more powerful/violent nations/civilizations throughout history. But more closer to your point: None thrive on altruism... but on survival through interaction, interdependence, synergy, symbiosis... in anycase: not through willful genocidal acts driven by cultural arrogance and ignorance. harsh words? Pure history!!

  • simply not true.

  • A wise man once said, "Everything great was soaked in blood for a long long time."

    Your morals are showing.

  • is that a wrong thing lol... you make it sound like you mean to say: "your genitals are showing". or am I misreading your comment ;-)? In any case, I am rarely ashamed of my ethics...

  • In all this debate, please let us not forget why we came here: THIS MUSIC IS AWESOME. ok???? ;-)! Now lets continue with this friendly quarrel.

  • Magnifique, merci .

  • I'm addicted to this song! Great balance, great inspiration. Fantastic performance, it makes me dream awake. Thank you Asteria for this piece of poetry.

  • indeed.

  • Just amazing! It makes me feel great! Thank you for sharing that wonderful voice.

  • Mon Dieu!

Schoene Stimmen Asteria, so halten. Zu viel Zucker vielleicht? Sonst alles bestens, auch die Blogs. Videohygiene ist angesagt, ernst. Cantigas nur pur!

  • Français en plus! Wonderfull! Totaly amazing voice and nice lute playing style.

  • Wonderful enchanting music..brings me back to past lifes...just bought your CD's and loving them..this piece is absolutely favorite..Thank you!

  • I've just noticed "The Sacrifice" from "The Piano" on your playlist and so, please, forgive me any unappropriated words of mine that might have been written, milady. It won't happen again. Peace. MG

  • Where i can find some score for guitar?

  • Past lifes you say? Beautiful voices I have to admit... still (and I'm listening to this piece while writing to you)... kind of an american version of a cantiga don't you think? This looks of hers and letters on the walls that nobody past the Atlantic can really understand? Still, respect, one courtly love,

    MG

  • molto bello!!

  • Beautiful.

  • You were looking at Eric? I didnt even notice he was there until you said that! I was too mesmerized by Sylvia's voice and beauty. lol

  • nothing looks more like a musician than a used car salesman, just as nothing looks more like a billion rich man than a waiter ;)

  • meraviglia!! bravi!

  • can u give me the chords of this song?

    this is a beautiful song

  • they are playing in Paris on May 22 at the Crypte du Martyrium de St Denis!!!

  • Beautiful, you would be perfect in Asarim...

  • well, it is actually medieval french, which indeed has some unusual sounds in it - but not American per se.

  • Lovely and beautiful performance.Fantastic with the lyrics. Thanks

  • Thank You

  • j'aime

  • Lovely. Thanks for posting!

  • If the gentle maiden, The most gracious and beautiful, She, with whom I am in love, Desires only to make me happy, Should I not grant her wish? Certainly yes -- for she is the one Who calls me her sweet love -- I could not be happier! Pleasure renews itself in me. I desire no other lover but her — To serve her everywhere Within my power, For good or better, That is my wish.
  • hard to translate even for a french, its old french and hardly understandable.

i can understand "when the sweet maiden will come, the girl i love..." but i need too a translation after that.

  • I very like this music and also the voice of singers. Lovely interpretation!

  • It's completely delicious. Bravo and brava!

  • The best so far.Can anybody translate the singing for me ? Is it love ?

  • Love it. Watch Eric. You can see how he's into the music. How can you help being moved? I love his voice and wish it were somewhat more prominent. He seems to think of himself as background more than as an equal part.

  • Nice playing

  • Europa!!

  • this is realy beautiful - youre just good !!!

    - better than most of the medieval junk we have to listen to ^^

    Greetings from germany - Ingo

  • Divine. I'm happy there are people to upload such music.

  • Amongst all music showcased on youtube... No two styles draw more praise and critsizm and bitter arguments and comments... Than Classical and Rock n'Roll...

  • If only I could find a lute and someone to teach me in to the arts of playing one.

  • What an enchanting and refined performance! Is is artists such as Sylvia and Eric who delve deeply enough into this marvelous repertoire to unlock its portrayal of the bittersweetness of courtly love. I could almost feel myself in the great hall of a castle in the afterglow of a sumptuous feast as i listened to them. They are sublime!

  • Whoa there! you should have a look at the facsimile of this piece (it is found in MS. Canon. Misc. 213 in Oxford). You may be surprised to see that this arrangement by Asteria is very close to the original manuscript, almost note-for-note. Also, be aware that this is sung in late-medieval french (using the best research available to approximate proper pronunciation), so it is not surprising that it sounds odd to you. About Sylvia's voice, well - everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

  • I agree with you ecumedejours. Without being a time traveller we cant know whether this would have convinced the Burgundians. I personally think they would have loved it. The singer's early renaissance/late medieval French seems pretty convincing to me!

  • I just talk with François Villon and Charles d'Orléans, and they assure me that they found Sylvia's voice absolutely delicious.

  • Yes, and I suppose you think Rossini's William Tell Overture is the theme from The Lone Ranger. You obviously have no taste and are totally incapable of appreciating great music. I pity you. Keep listening to Barry Manilow or whomever you can relate to, and leave the great music for those who understand the spirit of it.

  • Fantastic Performance. They captured a wonderfully quixotic and somewhat sad feeling in the song. Great Musicianship. Bravo.

  • It's not quite R&B is it?

  • Magic

  • Amazing! Absolutely magic! fantastic scenario! very good playing and singing!

    Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I always wanted to learn the lute. Great harmony in the vocals also. Very very good - thanks.

  • Wow!

  • Ah, one almost remembers this beautiful medium of communication and music. The soul smiles and breathes a breath of fresh and ancient air. Thank you both so much. J.Tobia

  • mois is correct except i feel all is lost and those we do not speak have won so take your joy now and leave this earth at your OWN accord,at 8% of the population it is lost we have been a let down to nature anyway we i cant wait till mankind parts for good so something more worthy can inhabit it.

  • Beeeeeeutiful!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

  • Gorgeous!

  • whats thr name of this instrument?

  • lute

  • These fine artists must be thrilled to perform in this very historic place, because it seems to come through in the soul of their music.

  • ...and maybe could some gentleman also give me some informations about where I could find the tablature of this admirable piece on the web ?

  • could someone please tell me who is the composer of this beautyful song ?

  • It's an anonymous French song from the XV century

  • And a beautiful one too.

  • This was music in its highest form! These days are gone, but we will always have this! Well done! We were born 500 years too late!

  • I believe, signor, that it is time for our nations in Europe to find their own style, architecture, literature and culture again. We could look at the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance (the first golden age of Europe since the Romans) for inspiration.
