How long have you been studying Japanese for? You speak so fluently that there weren't really any discernable differences between your speech & the Japanese natives...(from what little I could understand!)
。 I mean let's face it, across Japan I think most would agree that Hiroshimajin speak the most slang and the men have the most deeply rooted strong voices and tones...Boku does sound a little gay, mostly because it's only used by boys in school. Ore you only obviously say to your buddies. But if you want to sort of just be in the middle, being polite and still slang.I think わし is reasonable. Only usable with family and close friends. Interesting video though.
@psychopomp88 I think that was just his opinion. I don't think it sounds gay, and most Japanese people would probably agree. Ore shouldn't be used in situations where you wanna be polite.
Yeah after I typed that I realized that I can't take a small sampling of guys' opinions too seriously.
Anyway did you say that you work in Japanese in the service industry? How did you get into that? I'm looking to get to Japan (to become better at Japanese...we'll see how that goes) but so far I've mainly been aiming for teaching positions because I thought those were the only jobs gaijin could get there.
@psychopomp88 Unless you work for an overseas company with offices in Japan, teaching positions are pretty much the only jobs that will get you a visa, which you need to make it into the country as anything more than a tourist. Once you're here and have a visa though, foreigners can get any jobs that they're qualified for. If your Japanese is good enough for customer service, many restaurants and stores would be happy to have a foreigner on staff.
Oh yes and no disrespect to anybody but here in canada I've seen many japanese teenage guys that are actually very girly.. they wear scarves and stuff that only girls would wear here in America. I guess it's according to culture... but Bobby you look very manly and once again please keep up your good work and keep cooking! =) LOVE your cooking videos!
I hope you see my post and you can read that I am quite impressed about you being able to speak japanese so freely and not be shy.I've heard Japanese is mostly about phonetics therefore a little hard to learn... Same as arabic or mandarin.I have recently found your videos and they are awesome... I LOVE japanese cooking.. as a matter of fact i cook it alot but it's kinda hard finding some things here in Ottawa Ontario canada... maybe it would be easier if I lived in vancouver. Love your vids!
Interesting! It's best to fit in with your gender, age and region, while maintaining your "standard" speech - cause you'll still need it!
Like Bobby I've also gotten heavily influenced by my Japanese partner... but he is the guy and I'm an English-native girl, and idk who has it worse - the femme foreign guys, or me! It's hard to hide my manliness and Kansai accent in casual company, so I had to become "the funny one" but it alienates Japanese women whom I wanna befriend :/ Be careful girls!
NOTHING to be worried about your Japanese. You don't need to get so-called manly Japanese, I think. To be polite is manly in Japan, I would rather say.
Lol...so Japanese guys aren't really shy, they're just putting on a cool front....? Maybe?
This was really entertaining. I know a Japanese guy who always uses "僕" and other feminine speech. Have always been pretty sure he's gay. Also had little 1-3 year olds in my baby class who used 俺. Fun stuff. XD
My biggest advice is just to keep using it with your friends who can tell you honestly when you say things that are weird/awkward. Thats how I learned English too! I came to the states 9 years ago and learned so much from making mistakes and still do. If I can be of any help, let me know!
interestinggg. LOL I'm half Japanese but I remember I would always have a weird accent when I went to school and talk to my classmates... like... I didn't know their slangs and such and I stayed in Shizuoka so a lot of my friends had that Shizuoka-ben. after awhile though... the language starts to grow on you more and you start talking like the people around you.
I wish I could go back to Japan so I can get my Japanese back. I hardly ever speak it anymore :/
I think the "boku makes you sound homosexual" part was a joke, because while i was living in Japan (Saga, actually!) a friend was really trying to sell that to me, too. In the end he actually admitted it was a lie (: Though I can't say the same about using your name- it sounds girly and childish even when girls use it (my friend, 19-years old uses it all the time and people tend to always ask her to finally give that way of calling herself up) and guys.. I don't even want to imagine, haha!
You will learn to speak Japanese naturally by understanding the culture and how the language works, lessons on our videos - youtube.com/watch?v=wfseANZtMNg
I'm glad you didn't say anime. Your problem is that like so many gaijin men in Japan you've probably don't have very few if any local guy friends - see how you have to talk to strange men to teach you how a guy talks. This is due to hidden racism from both sides - you probably adopted the inferior Asian men stereotype American mass media forced on you, and the Japanese men is displaying typical fear and xenophobia against you. You want to talk like a real Kyushu men? Try hanging out them.
Woah! I didn't know using 僕 made you come off a homosexual (although I have nothing against homosexuals). They don't teach this stuff in most books or classes. They just say that 僕 is used my young males (which I am) and 俺 made you sound cocky or something like that. Thanks for putting the Japanese text on the video because my 'Japanese ears' haven't come in all the way and I can't catch most things on the first listen.
This is exactly the kind of stuff about Japanese that I've been wanting to learn! It's too bad it's not taught in college classes and textbooks. I'm moving to Japan in September and I'm so afraid of talking like a transvestite. lol. Thanks so much for talking to these people for us soon-to-be gaijin.
Good video. I thought this would be stupid, but this has better info than most books. Whenever I try to use japanese I learn out of books, I always get the same responeses, "That's too polite" or "that's an old way of speaking." Make more videos about how common people talk.
I'm very impressed with how deep you went into the particulars, and that you got actual responses from people. Great work.
I sometimes find that when I ask things too specifically, it seems like unnecessary knowledge to my fellow researchers here. In fact, we now have an inside joke -- "have to じゃない" -- that means, "It's really not that important to know."
You are not necessarily try to speak like masculine men. Indeed your way of speaking sounds polite and beautiful, and I like it. Also points which make your way of speaking sound like a man or a woman are not just determined by some sorts of phases or sentences, but also your body action, tone of voice, pronunciation. I don't think your Japanese sounds like a girl.
It's been raining here, so we've had to put off our Kagamiyama trip. I can't wait for the rainy season to be over! Don't give up on English! Which state are you in?
Your Japanese seems really rich & the video is interesting! I think it's more like they are used to such words instead of they are exclusively for men. That's why we see that some of the men in the clip are not quite sure about the explanations.
Hi Mr.Judo, I recently started learning Japanese, and your videos have been a huge inspiration to me. I'm currently fluent in English and Spanish—thank you hispanic parents—and I would love to become fluent in at least 10 languages before I croak. Do you have any memorization tips that have helped you in memorizing grammatical rules and vocabulary? Also, do you know of any reliable websites/forums to ask some basic Japanese-grammar questions on?
Really enjoyed your video. I've sever been to Saga, but I spent a summer in Kumamoto and I found most of the guys to be completely unintelligible. I guess the local dialect in Saga isn't so strong?
Ha ha. Good video Bobby. I've studied a little japanese so I can understand some of what you are saying in the video, and definitely I can understand the point of your questions. For me, my japanese is really "textbook", probably because I have nobody to practice with on a regular basis.
Hey can you give me some tips on Japanese language speaking... practice... I've been learning the language for almost a year now, but I can barely speak more than 5 sentences... I scored well in most of my entry exams, but I just can't seems to get to speak well... sigh...
Thanks for posting such a great video. I think every guy who's ever lived in Japan and spent a lot of time with a girlfriend has been pondering this exact topic. I wonder if there's a similar report out there specific to 東北...
It must be difficult to learn manly Japanese outside of Japan, what with the really polite language we're taught in schools. XD I heard a similar story from a Canadian guy at the Japanese embassy here in Canberra - he picked up most of his speech habits from his wife.
In contrast, though, my Japanese teacher says she sounds like a man when she speaks Japanese, LOL.

It really depends on people. I don't find any problems with your Japanese.
I AM JAPANESE though...
Indeed, people have a certain words to use, so
we don't really care about the language we use when we talk except the
formal situation. Your Japanese is very polite, but very natural and favorable.
What the people said in this video was just their opinion.

特に、九州男児のイメージは特に亭主関白ってゆうか、頑固ってゆうか。『女は男について来い』みたいなイメージです。それが日本人らしさかもしれませんが、あたしはあんまり好きじゃないです。昔の人は偉そうにしてた分だけ家族を守ってきたかもしれませんが、今はそんなに頼りにならないのに、亭主関白な部分だけ残ってる人もけっこういる気がしますよ。そんなに日本人や九州男児になりきらなくても、ボビーさんらしくいてもらいたいと、、勝手に思いました。(^^;

Thanks for doing what you do.
