Valid point, Questpeace. I just started listening to BPB; so far I like it a lot. Sometimes listening to dark music feels good. You can revel in the darkness. But too much just makes me depressed. What do you think? Dark music: cathartic or depressing? Discuss. (Cofee talk)
If we're just talking about this song then it's not as dark as I could see him go. I mean second verse is very not-depressing, especially ending on "My best unbeaten brother/This isn't all I see" giving an almost new meaning to the end chorus. He likes the subtle stuff.
Actually, Questpeace, I can hardly think of a musician less likely to. Oldham is no Cobain or Curtis. As someone once commented he specialises in joyful songs about death and joyless ones about sex. He can be wilfully difficult and his quality control wavers but when he's on song his beauty is breathtaking and uplifting. This is one of the finest songs I have heard this millenium
Hes not an old geezer. Will Oldham must be just in his late 30s. Also trying to compare him to Jeff Buckley...Thats like trying to compare a Studebaker vintage car to a push bike...Two seperate voices completely beautiful but very different in comparison...
Well, I hope that someday buddy We have peace in our lives; Together or apart, Alone or with our wives, And we can stop our whoring, And pull the smiles inside, And light it up forever, And never go to sleep. My best unbeaten brother, This isn't all I see. (Oh) no, I see a darkness.

Unfortuntely he kind of sucks live, or so it seems. I hate to say it because I listen to the album 24/7, but live, uhm, its all kind of boring. :(

Why does he call himself
Bonnie'prince'Billy ?
some kind of "in"joke ?
Excorcising your demons in public
can be exciting (Hendrix),
But this is just plain boring & Bad.

I love this song, it reminds me of late night drunken conversations with my good friend.
The duet of this song that will and johnny cash recorded is truly beautiful. Their voices and harmonies fit so perfectly.
nice post.

Well, you're my friend, and can you see?
Many times, we've been out drinking;
Many times we shared our thoughts.
But did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got?
Well, you know I have a love; a love for everyone I know.
And you know I have a drive, to live I won't let go.
But can you see its opposition, comes rising up sometimes?
That its dreadful imposition, comes blacking in my mind?
