  • Very good lesson no doubt! Professional grade more or less

  • best guitar tutor on YouTube ..... !!!

  • Hey Justin... Great tutorial.... One of the best on the Youtube.. Ive been trying to work out your strumming pattern. But im not quite sure what your doing. It looks like your slapping the low E and pulling down to strum all the notes in the C Chord... When i play it this way it sounds like there's something missing could you enlighten me Please. Keep up the Great Work

  • OMG beautiful, super easy chord shapes but horrendously difficult flatpicking on the other end :D Great tutorial, many thanks. Nice vocals too

  • Magnificent, Justin. Your rendition of this great Knopfler song--just one of many--is worthy of the master picker himself. You get wonderful riffs and chords out of that sweet guitar of yours, and your vocal performance is as pleasing as your guitar playing. Some of your arpeggios sound like a fine harp. I'm sure that aspiring players would appreciate your approach to other Dire Strait songs like "Telegraph Road" and "Sultans of Swing." Your instruction is clear and inspiring. Well done, Mate!

  • Finally complete lesson for this beautiful song... Thank you Justin, Best teacher ever!!!

  • Nice ring!

  • @jacque123ish tuning DGDGBD (top to bottom string) without capo, then just add capo to third fret.

  • can someone please tell me how to get into correct tuning for this song??

  • wow!

  • is there a tab for this!?

  • do i put the capo and tune or tune and then put the capo?

oh and... when i tune i didnt understand what u ment by tuning up- what like, spining the key to make a higher note instead of a lower note?!

  • @Quminki tuning up basically just means tuning. and you want to tune after the capo because i believe that is the notes he tells you for but i could be wrong

  • I can't express in words how grateful I am for what you are doing and providing Justin, thank you. I'm off to buy the first of your E books having just signed up to the site.

    Thanks again! :)

  • we need a collaborative performance with the biggest guitar teachers on youtube. Justin, Marty and a couple others i cant think of

  • Pat on the back Justin, great job.

I enjoyed istening to you singing and playing the song through after the lesson. Really nice

  • can you teach the walk of life alse? would be great!, thx for the great lesson, i can almost do it except for that hard part

  • been trying every day before work and after work 3 days nearly there having prob's with that hard part you were saying about i'll get it thank you JUSTIN always wanted to learn this

  • hey justin what type of guitar is that sounds good , i'm looking to buy a guitar any help will great thx

  • you are correct, he uses the 3rd finger for the strum.

  • You are aware that you said ''G-tuning'' at the beginning but that it has to be a ''B-tuning''? :p

  • Hey Justin,

    Hope you're well mate.

Just came across your page recently via this lesson. You came across very well and it was clear by your technique that you are a professional.

I since checked out some more of your videos and website and am really impressed, you're on top of your game.

Your honour system is inspiring and I hope your doing well from all the work, you deserve it!

    Cheers,

    Alex

  • @AlexStorkMusic Hear,Hear

  • Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but this video has had more hits than Mark Knopfler's own video about the same song. Nice one Justin.

  • Justin, Thank you so much. Your tutorials suit me way better than the others I've tried. Truly inspirational!!

  • Thanks for the lesson, Justin. Im learning to play the riff in open E tune though. I don't like to change the open strings. Its harder but im getting there. Im using your lesson to hear wich notes are being played in the right order.

  • @RingsOfNeptune change the tuning go outside your comfort zone :)

  • brb, getting a capo.

  • Best lesson and best cover with one video, not bad I'd say :P

  • Hey Justin, just listening to you play this at the end is a real pleasure. Thanks for sharing this amazing one. It is such a complex song that finding good tutorials on it is also difficult.

  • With a love song Open Strihing:P

  • This is the most beautiful and useful video on youtube, both for the lesson and for the playing at the end, what a great job! I would give my life to play like that!! Thanks! =)

  • Great lesson...

Just 1 question wahat is taht ring your wearing on your middle finger??

  • As a guitar player myself for over 40 years now (yes - I'm a dinosaur..lol), I can appreciate listening to a great player (from another player's perspective) and I have to say you are GREAT..!! The old adage "those who can -do and those who can't -teach" doesn't even remotely apply to you. Fantasic lesson / great playing / personable style - thanks so much for posting. This is abvsolutely gold..!!

  • Always one of my favorite songs. I wasn't expecting your cover of it to be so great. Your attitude and talent are top notch. Never disappointed in your videos. Thanks!

  • You are the best on Youtube, save Mark himself :)

  • Hey Justin! Awesome one! Will be really nice if you put the whole song Rome&Juliet you performed. Your version is really, really nice.

  • Awesome stuff Justin. Thank you!

  • Isn't it a terrible idea to tune up with a capo on? It makes the strings break, doesn't it?

  • Great lesson! thanks and greetings from Holland!

  • i love this song i had the priveledge of seeing them live in melbourne in 1986 it is one concert that has etched itself in my heart and mind as one of my favorite memories of all time real very realmusic great quality

  • You have talent, man.

    BRAVO!!!

  • That is so nice. Just got your folk fingerstyle lessons in the mail so plenty of sore fingertips on the way.

  • I know every video has this comment, but how can you give this video a dislike.

P.S. great cover at the end!

  • amazing justin, but isnt there a way to play without capo ?

  • can you just tune the string up to a Bb chord and play it without capo?

  • @just4mak You don't want to tune up too much, or the strings might snap of the guitar.

  • Justin, Thanks for all you do. My guitar was something to hang my cloths on to dry. That was till i started watching your videos. Your amazing patience and Love of the instrument has me playing at least an hour a day. And i am actually getting somewhere and enjoying it. Keep it up and know we are indeed learning from you.

  • can someone tell me if its those notes with the capo on or without?

  • @TheQwesDog ..With it on the 3rd fret.

  • how would it look if played in normal EADGBE tuning ?

    is that possible ?

  • @volvoergosum

it is possible, with capo on 5th fret, you start with a standard "C-chord" then, but of course it won't exactly sound like the original.

  • shit my string broke when i was tuning :,(

  • @TheQwesDog i think this tuning is curse my high e string just snapped as i was tuning my guitar as well :(

  • @aandresification yeah, did you tune with the capo on? thats what i did and my high e broke. i just got new strings so I'm going to try this again haha

  • Ha..... couldn't get the "swing" of the first chord shape until I realised that after the 6th 1st pluck, it goes in a 1-2-3 1-2-3 tempo... so 4th 3rd 2nd then 1st 3rd 5th........ then it suddenly made sense....... not sure if I'm explaining this right but Justin presents it as 4th 3rd 2nd 1st and then adds the 3rd 5th bit as an extra...which threw me...... does anyone get what I mean :-)

  • You really are picking nice riffs which encouraging learning. thanks

  • you are great dude!!...the best lesson found on youtube!! respect and keep in goin!

  • Beat that MARTY!!!!

  • Hey, Justin, What guitar are you playing here? It sounds absolutely wonderful, specially when you play that song!

  • @todormircea It's the capo that makes that distinct sound, not so much about the guitar (even if it indeed counts ofc)...

  • CLASS .. I'M OFF TO GIVE IT A GO....

  • awesome mate !

  • Hey, I just fell in love with that telecaster on the back.

  • As always you are great

  • Totally awesome

  • awesome lesson, thanks!

  • Wow man, that lesson was str8 up legit!

  • Hey @JustinSandercoeSongs what are you recording with ?

  • damn, I just broke my string, now I have to wait till tomorrowmorning until I can play this :( can't wait!

  • "A lovestruck Romeo"... thanks for posting this one... Greets from France:))

  • You put your capo right up by the fret - is that better? I usually stick mine halfway between the frets, so the tension between frets is even.

However, I have a very cheap capo ;)

  • haha, i had my guitar tuned to G for 'brown sugar', and now i play this! thank yous

  • 12:15 gives me chills. that smile looks like JSC has just recalled "singing up to girl like that":) i did struggle on that funny strumming, but have been practicing cause the way it sounds makes it worth the effort. hope to see more of ya, cheers from Poland

  • Hey Justin, great lesson--love this song! About the chords; (somebody may have already said this but I don't have time for ALL the comments) as a banjo player who spends alot of time in open G, I cansay the second chord in the verse is a 6th (or reletive minor to the root in this case Dminor), but as your top string isn't played, youre fingering a partial chord. And the other 'strange' one is good old Gminor moving to a quick Aminor before going back to F. Hope that may help someone.

  • Please, please teach private universe - crowded house!

    Please?

  • What happened to Black Dog?

  • Hey Justin!!! Please do Classical Gas....THANKS!!!!!!!

... thanks for intro and complete song at end.

  • Nice one Justin. this lesson appeared in Guitar Techniques a few years ago, think Eric Roche was the guide but not 100% if it was him?, I learned it then forgot as you do, so thanks for sharing, looks like it has come back to me again, think it may have been wise to demonstrate how to tune down to open G tuning, judging by some comments it looks like a few peeps don't understand this concept? anyway a fine lesson and thanks for sharing! :-)

  • THANK YOUUUU Justin! :) You do the best guitar lessons! I've been trying this one out many times, only now I finally learned it. :D

  • What is tuning? The first string isn't E...

  • @fcthemaster open G means DGDGHD from low to high string ;)

btw he does say it in the video...

  • @SingSai22 thanks, I'm italian and i didn't understand this detail... :-)

  • Cheers - I really enjoyed the lesson - & the performance!!

  • sounds awesmoe

  • Wicked! One of my favorites and have been working on this for sometime. This is going to be helpful. Thanks Justin! :-)

  • i dont get the tuning

  • yeah it doesnt work on my acoustic guitar, try giving some lessons with standard tuning

  • Grazie Justin.

  • Awesome! And as others have said, your performance at the end was fantastic - your singing voice matches this tune nicely I think (the excellent guitar playing goes without saying of course).

  • Dude, Your awesome! :D

  • great!! he finally bought a good camera

  • Thanks justin. Youre going a little bit too fast though

  • Thanks justin

  • Whoa I never heard you sing, sorry for not checking up on you for so long Justin, Cheers! =)

  • Justin. You are a good soul. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. You do it with kindness and grace and you are making many a guitar player very happy. Keep on bringing it on brother.

  • Easy to play, hard to sound so damn good

  • Amazing

  • Beautiful

  • Hi JustinSandercoeSongs,

    That's a name and a half! LOL!

Hey, I love beautifully crisp sound of your guitar, and yes, your tuning is perfect! I like the slightly softer sound when you use the finger nails rather than a 'pick' or a coin.

Nice detailed videos, thanks so much for the upload!

    Take care,

    mrbluenun

  • are we ment to tune down THEN put the capo on, or put the capo on THEN tune?

  • @Timbats93 i think he said to do it with the capo on, double check with the video :)

  • @Timbats93 He basically said to make sure that you are still in open G once you place the capo. More specifically he says to have your strings a little looser (tuned down) than an open G tuning then place your capo on and tighten (tune up) your strings into the proper open G tuning. Basically because if you tune down with a capo on it will hold tight enough that the strings will only loosen on the side facing the tuning keys, but if you tune up you can pull the strings through its grip.

  • @logipi79 Thanks man

  • thank you justin this video came just in time!!!

  • Damn, Justin has done more for me than my dad ever could. Thank you, man.

  • hi justin ...i cant believe when i got to know u have uploaded this song..i learnt sultans of swing from ur videos too..i have been trying to find a way to learn this particlular one...and you do make it very interesting..thanks a ton

  • Amazing !

Justin, you make it seem soo simple !

I've had my guitar parked in its box for a while - simply not having (making) time to play... Such playing of such a great song makes me take it out straight away to give it a try...

    Very inspiring !

    Thx

  • This is great! I hate that it sounds soo good with capo! Because capo isn't like a pick, you can't just have it in your pocket...

  • @Matheus222 Clip it on the head of your guitar, I have one and a tuner clipped on the guitar I play most frequently.

  • @baadshepherd Yes but mostly I walk to places without thinking about playing guitar, then someone has a guitar and ask me if I can play some.. Then I always have a pick in my pocket, but not a capo..

  • @Matheus222 ah.

  • justin you are a true treasure. thank you

  • can't get the tuning right ... O well, I'm gonna buy a new guitar ... lol

  • Difficult, but wonderfully explained , of to practice! thanks

  • Very nice!

    Thank's for your lesson!

  • This song is the reason I first started playing guitar! Still can't play it, this gives me some hope for retrying it!:D Thanks

  • You really do bring this song to life ,& then be prepared to show us how to do it as well is amazing .many thanks for all your lessons

  • Wish I could do that...

  • Oh and...That tele on the background. We are waiting for it to be played! : )

  • Amazing perfomance. Not sure about playing, but singing is much better than the original. Playing is also marvelous though. Thanks for the lesson!

  • The performance at the end was spectacular! Your voice sounded a bit like Bob Dylan! ...amazing lesson as always, Justin

  • it says open g - capo 5th on the website;/

  • justin is the second coming of jesus
