  • This is song is for my girlfriend who was also my best friend

  • Alot of people think this song depressing, I find it oddly life affirming....That's kind of how I feel about the whole album. It's dark but there's a resilient strength to it as well.

  • Ah the dilemma of the rational man who wants to find a reason to live, but all rational thoughts are pointing toward death. Far too well acquainted with this...especially in the wake of the lovely alienating and mocking holiday season.

  • Here I sit alone on New Year's Eve...well, Now New Year's Day...it's after midnight...after a series of nights contemplating youknowhat. I would send this to everyone I've ever known...even my enemies. :)

  • @SugarSigur i did the same and ditto..

  • @SugarSigur Its okay my friend, you're not alone.

  • nah, Johnny Cash's version blows in comparison ... :-/ sorry

  • @jmathos Oldham also sang in his version. Makes it great.

  • Great song for those days...you know the ones.

  • Why dont I just fucking top myself. I love this song, but I dislike the way it pulls open a chasm.

  • Does Will Oldham still act? I thought he was great in "Matewan". That was a great fucking movie!

  • Love Will's emotional effort in this song.

  • geil

  • i wish some1 would help me from this darkness that get to me. this song give me mixed feeling. the song sound so...calm but depressing. make me realise how alone i am. but make me think that i got friends n familly to help me out

im just tired of that rejection men...

  • @mic7reaper i feel ya'brotha

  • I've Seen Many Darknesses

  • did this version or johnny's come first?

  • @CynicallyObnoxious

This is the original one. You can also listen the voice of Bonnie prince billy (will oldham) in the version of johnny cash...

  • @CynicallyObnoxious This one came first. Awesome an artist as great as Johnny Cash would cover a Will Oldham track like this...a great combonation of two terrific musicians.

  • awesome

  • FUCK THE DARKNESS

  • It's a fantastic song, but I prefer the Johnny Cash version.

  • @mumfordguitarman Yeah I agree. Both versions are terrific, but Johnny Cash's will always be miles better in my opinion. Nothing against the original, but it's just my opinion.

  • That chorus. Fuck.

  • bonita

  • is that skull moving? the fuck?

  • @SaviorThree was just thinking the same thing. Think it's my tired eyes. Unless it's ALIVE!! ooha ah ah

  • @SaviorThree

It ís moving, alright. That only goes to show that there are so many things around for us to see, if only we'd...

  • This is real art! When i listen to this my whole body aches and i'm in a different world!

  • @Alisu91 me too x

  • and light it up forever

  • The first line alone is enough to sum up life.

  • this song conveys depression better than anything else I know

  • I like Johnny's cover more, sorry.

  • When you write a song, and not even Johnny Cash can do it justice? Well then I think that you have pretty much done your best.

  • anybody else get chills when the chorus kicked in? haha

  • This is not my usual type of music but man this song just gets right inside you. Great song to sit alone and think a little.

  • men this song...makes me cry everytime. idont know why. everytime i listen to it , all i can think of is if all of the people i love are dead. beeing alone would be soo hard. espessialy without my mom. they all helped me so much trought my life. i dont want them to be gone...

  • Friends huh!? They'll get you every time!

  • "And we can stop our whoring, and pull the smiles inside.."

  • Beautifully sad, and more.

    Will Oldham for President.

  • This makes me shiver

  • this is the song to fucking to die too an im thinking about it ?

  • @adamdxion34 listen to more happy songs and you wont keep feeling like that

  • 'How far away now is all that lightness

And all that innocence! Ah, backwards yet,

From black winter fled, to the Springtime of regret,

From my disgust, my boredom, my distress.' -Paul Verlaine

  • @Tuknati u suk

  • Beautiful...

  • Probabally the best song ever, it's tight but just might be.

  • thanks, Johnny Cash, for introducing me to this!

  • most.beautiful.song.evar.

  • death to everyone

  • Is that Will doing the backing vocals during the chorus?

  • I absolutely love this song. Everything Oldham touches is gold. If you like this song, you should check out ''Fragile Bones(Feels Like Home)'' by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. His music is so dreamy and sad and beautiful. Makes me cry...

  • 0 dislikes, that says a lot

  • @seniorclapshishands After reading your comment I almost pressed the Thumbs Down button just for the laughs of it. But this song is too good for that.

  • I don't know what I'm supposed to say, so I'll just sit and feel until the feelings go.

  • @llynnowens wise words my friend.... wise words... =)

  • @llynnowens safe bruv you're a dickhead

  • @xjaisovx haha what a coincidence, that's exactly why i'm here, i heard it for like 10 secs at the end of a full length documentary on nirvana

  • @xjaisovx: just watched the film "In Utero" about Nirvana's last album where Bonnie "Prince" was called as a post-Nirvana artist.

  • This is such a beautiful song.......so powerful and dark......but so moving as well.

  • Music at it's purest. So much feeling, it's almost unbeliavable.

  • fucking right on.

  • This is fuckin amazing.

  • I heard this song after a podcast of "This American Life" in which they tell a suicide story- well it's much more than that but you have to listen to it. It made this song poignant and as of typing this I've been strumming the chords and heard it all the way through 10 times straight.

  • @available21 That's where I heard it too. And I sat down at the piano to work out the chords too. I went and got it from iTunes, soon as I figured out what it was.

  • this has a very personal feeling for me.its like it came right from my friends mouth.he died 3 months ago.he tried suicide and survived, only later to be diagnosed with liver cancer, then died, alone in his tiny apartment from an accidental overdose of pain meds.31 years young.he struggled in life more than anyone i know,he wanted to die everyday but only the thoughts of seeing his son again someday kept him going.but he too, could only see darkness in everything.he never knew how many people cared

  • 0 people need to see a darkness.

  • all i see is a darkness.......my brother is gone he killed hisself this song reminds me of him RIP Russell Trenton Acord

  • @stefanieacord I'm sorry about your brother....

  • this time of year everything is red and green.. but this year all i see... all i feel... is darkness.

  • @brandonwalsh00 hey, if you ever want to talk, I'm here...I can relate....

  • @nothingsafe84 thank you same goes for you they say its good to talk about but damn......

  • Just awesome!!! I totally agree with maclennan73

  • omg this song is like so deep and meaningful, its like i understand exactly what they are saying but no one else can because they just don't get it....this isn't book club, go cry elsewhere

  • I wasn't a big Will Oldham fan until this album came out. I think Roy Orbison would have done a much better cover of this than Johnny Cash. Oh well. Sad, but uplifting if you pay attention to the lyrics for a few verses.

  • When this album came out it totally blew my mind- depressing to some, absolutely life affirming to me!

  • damn true.

  • One of the most moving and genuine songs ever made. Moves me to tears every time.

  • The buildup to the chorus -> chorus transition is godly

  • @TallFastLoud there's no build up, it keeps the same tempo throughout

  • @tonkatuff54 tallfastloud may have been referring to the areas of 3:45 to 4:07 and beyond.

  • says it all really

  • Gives me the chills. I heard the Johnny Cash cover first, and went looking on youtube for other version.

  • I'm crying.... I'm actually crying....

It takes a lot to make me cry......

  • third time I'm hearing it...it moves me to tears.....

  • I just found it...its quite sad

  • This says it all :-( Cried my ass over it

  • @bulgarinaaa It surprised me.
